I have a mag that has the M1 and also the Fiero in it. I think the section with the M1 is comparing exotics. I'll try to dig it up. I have a few others with Fieros too - car & driver, road & track type stuff
I have a much higher quality scan in psd format. This is from Motor Trend, March 1988. Article is "Top 10 Exoticars of All Time", no comparisons but each car has a page or a little less, first one shown is the M1:
The front end looks just like a notchie, the wheels are BBS or BBS clones. A page in one of these mags from the Fiero era is an ad for ordering BBS wheels, and one of them was 100% identical to the Fiero "diamond spoke" wheels.
Not to thread-hijack, but the other top 10 cars in this issue are Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer, Ferrari F40, Ferrari GTO, Ferrari Testarossa (EXACTLY the one I want: single nut in the center of the wheels, single outside mirror mounted high ), Ford GT-40, Lamborghini Countach, Lamborghini Miura, Lotus Turbo Esprit, Porsche 959.

It's almost certain the fiero was designed with styling inspirations from the M1, and other exotics, progressign from car to car in its production cycle. It is a beautiful car, pics dont do much, if any, justice. I did see one at the BMW Museum while in Munich this summer, awesome. I think a bump-pad with a front air dam, fastback clip, and kameo kids rear louvers would bear a stricking resemblence.
Somewhere around here I have a poster from 1980 featuring an M1 race car with its "Red Lobster" (sponsor) paint job. I had a couple of them. I have no idea where they are, though.

I bet pontiac desingers had some inspiration from lotus too, not hard to make a Fiero resemble one either, The Pisa Artero front looks very familiar, hmmmmm... http://pisafierohq.com/body_panels/front_ends/
