Whe I bought my car I had no idea what was done but I knew the cat was taken off and a performance exhaust but as fas as that I have done nothing but replace the ignition coil, cap, rotor, and module and a new intake with the schedueled maintinence and I took it out for a fun run and to practice some drifting and I was hiting sub 8 second 0-60 and I was wondering if it was normal for a 2.8 to do it, because im running 195 70 r14 sunfire steel wheels and bald tires on it and those numbers don't seem right from what I hear on the 2.8's. Is there any way to tell if the engine was swapped or something done to it because the odometer has 109k on it and the engine looks stock but does not perform stock and im getting 2nd gear chirp and pulling faster than a sc thunderbird off the line.
maybe... but I was timing with my stop watch and I have been driving a vega that was built of auto X and acceleration particularly 0-60 and nothing else. I dunno but as I said im able to take sc thunderbirds and n/a rx7's in acceleration and numerous other vehicles.
Ok guys, I'm gonna chime in here. I went to the "Year One Experience" yesterday. Link here if you wanna see what I'm talking about : http://yearone.com/Events/TYOE/default.aspx I did the 0-60-0 test. That's 0 to 60 mph and back to Full stop. They measured the 0-60 mph with a radar gun type of set-up.The problem came with trying to decide when you were really at 60 mph before hitting the brakes real hard. But my 0-60 time recorded was actually a 66.13 mph time of 6.63 sec. I have the 4.9 Caddy with 4T60e automatic tranny with a shift kit installed. Not that great of a time , but it was a recorded time , not some stopwatch deal. So I would say I'm really doing about a 6 sec 0-60 time. Just for laughs (and AMAZEMENT) the car that won the competition was a Mercury Marquis with the 4.6 V8 and my understanding was running a turbo or Supercharger. He did the 0-60 in 3.8 secs !!! A Z06 Vette followed directly behind me with a 0-60 of 5.7 for comparison. Was fun tho. LOL.

A Fiero 2.8L with a manual trans can do 0-60 in the mid 7 seconds range. A Fiero 2.8L with the auto trans can do 0-60 in the mid 8 second range. Of course this all depends on the engine, But in the above, a stock engine in very good shape (tuned, minimal wear, etc) should be close. My 2.8L with auto trans was running in the low 7 second range with performance exhaust, bored intake, upgraded ignition, trans shift kit, and no catalytic.
Heh, my '88 GT usually gets to 60 in about 8.5-9.0 seconds. That's with a motor (and the rest of the car, ) with only 42,000 miles on it. Its fully loaded with options though, and its an automatic. When I got it dynoed it got 107 hp and 135 tq. @ the rear wheels which is typical of a stock 2.8 auto. The manual cars were getting like 113-115 hp to the wheels and would probably get a better 0-60.
Its actually not that bad of a 0-60 time, look at the list that Ronnie posted. 1973 Pontiac Firebird 455ci 7.3 15.0 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS-350 8.0 15.4 1968 Chevrolet Corvette 327 7.7 15.6 1988 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z 7.0 15.5 1988 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am GTA 7.4 15.9 1988 Pontiac Fiero Formula 8.0 16.0
It was decent by muscle car standards of 10-15 years before, and of the standards of its time. In the past 20 years though, technology has way surpassed that of the 80's and most sports cars are 0-60 in 6 seconds or less.
Thats it exactly, in its day, the fiero was pretty respectable, heck even today its still a bit quicker than most. I should print that list out and carry it around. "Well yea, you were dang close there, but you're driving a 2004, lets see here, 1988 Honda Civic lets see here 0-60 about 14 seconds, 1/4 mile 2.3 days"
Funnyest thing ive ever heard, on top gear they were critiqing some econo car, made pretty good MPG as I recall but his statement on acceleration was hillarious" .. and it does naugh to 60, but just barely, in xxx" throw that into his british accent and it was pretty dang funny
I was satisfied with the times. Like I said , that time represents a 66 mph time. When looking at the list , a 6 sec 0-60 is still pretty good. Look at the cars that are running in the 6 - 6.5 second range. Hell , I'll take it.

Those times arent very accurate, or the driver must have sucked really bad.

My stock Auto 2.8 did 0 to 62.5 (100kmph) in 8.7s. I had the engine rebuild once and just for the heck of it, dropped in an Edelbrock HiPerf camshaft. That made absolutely zero difference performance wise.
