Another 3800SC hits the road with Stage 2 intercooler.

This install was done in 10 days from pull the 2.8 to running 3.8SC with IC. The wiring harness was built, the intake cut, the low mount made, the T-stat housing modded, the exhaust complete built, and all the other small items in this entire 10 days time. I dont do build threads as I go along, but here are the results of my work.

Pull 2.8

3800SC mounted and SC removed.

Inside a 27k engine. Nice and clean.

Before intake is cut

Intake now cut for the IC stage 2. I used my CNC mill to cut this.

Lower half of Intercooler section added... This is considered a GEN 2 IC with the lighting pockets, but these also add in silicon sealing. Product is from ZZPerformance. I am a certified installer for ZZPerformance now today as well.

IC is now complete with SC and PRJ fuel rails in place

Stage 2 Throttle body bored to 72MM, IC from the rear

Starting the OBDII wiring. This is the 3800SC engine harness ripped to each wire and connector. I concept build every harness. Each one is specific to the install and the mods.

AC hose build.. I do this all in house now since I purchased my own cripper and fittings.

Underside wiring and fuel lines. This is a RETURNLESS system I used. Keeps the fuel hoses clean up top.. Spark plug wires are all routed under the engine. These are MSD 8mm.

I took 100 pictures of this install. This only 18 of them. I will provide additional if I have it in that section. The orginal pics are high resolution and I will add this install to my projects page in a few days.

Loyde, I <3 you. After doing my wiring I think I'm just gonna send it to you seeing how you can make it that pretty. I'll let you know here shortly.

Edit: P.S. Who built that exhaust?!

Hey, just curious about this. What do you charge to make the hose fittings??? As of right now the AC compressor is just going to be an idler until we can find someone locally to make the hoses. Since you have done all the othe work (low alt, axle, wiring, PCM,etc) would be convientient if you'd be able to do the lines as well...

Is it possible to swap the valve cover on this engine in order to make adding oil more accessible? Also, what are the ramifications of mounting the ignition coils in that location unprotected?

OK, I always get the valve cover question... Here's my explanation for that...

Sure, they flip right around 100%.

Now, how often do you remove the oil fill ? Really think about it.. I install ONLY 30k or less engines to my installs. Realisticly, the engine oil is changed 3000 miles, or 3 months if done by the book. You pull the dipstick maybe 2 times in the 3000 miles if you are lucky. You add oil ZERO times if you have a good engine, and a good builder that made sure there were no oil leaks. Bottom line is, you take that oil fill cap off 4-6 times a year, you look at that engine compartment 10-15 times a month if you really like to show off your 3800sc in a Fiero.

So, in the interest of CLEAN looking install. I dont flip the valve covers. I talk about this to the customer, they agree, and it is done that way. If someone wants the oil fill up front, I flip the valve covers.

I am welding the dogbone today, and I will get the up top pictures today. I have already drove the car 50 miles total since installed.

Yes, you can switch the sides of the valve covers.

As far as mounting the coils there, GM makes their connectors water resistant. As long as he doesn't go through a deep puddle I don't see it being too much of a problem.

Here are the intercooler lines someone asked about in emails..

Now you see the lines....

Now you dont see them so well with a little black paint.

The next set of lines will be sweated fittings and copper even higher up so very little rubber hose is used.

Unprotected? Do you call them protected in the engine compartment with all the heat, and water when it rains? Have you ever drove your GTP in the rain and got out to see what is wet, and what is dry? The engine and all stuff gets wet.

Anyway, this is the 5th setup like this to get the coil packs mounted here. The rain actually misses this area of the car while driving down the road. The coil packs in this location have been tested in down pours with major street flooding, and ZERO problems from mis-fires, or stalling.

Its where I like it to keep the up top area once again ... CLEAN installed.

Man, if gas stays this expensive, I may have to consider a 3800SC swap instead of a V8. You make it look really good, Loyde.

For all of you guys considering doing a 3800 swap, I want to throw in two cents. I had my ECU Reprommed through Loyd as well as I ordered some tensioner parts from him. I can NOT express enough on how knowledgable and how helpful he was. The turn around on my ECU was A+ so was were the parts. I would reccommend him for ANY of your 3800 swap needs! The only thing I have yet to understand is his wierd voicemail thing. . . But again, he is A+ in his knowledge and service. . .

On a side note, Loyd, you remember that black Ferrari replica you bid on that was located here in Hampton VA, what kit was that? I just saw it yesterday on I-64 and was jaw dropped. About the only thing that really throws it off is the "GT 3800" Sticker on the back. That was the best replica car I've seen.

Thanks for the kind words...

The 308 body was from a guy here in Texas. He is retired. The molds were one of 3 sets of prefect molds pulled from a Mera car. 2 sets were destroyed in front of Ferrari lawyers so the story goes. One set survived. That set recently sold to a guy in Oklahoma from what I heard. I did the install of the 3800SC, but it was not to the level of install that I do today. Harold wanted to update the install, but the body work killed him, and the expense of updating forced him to sell. He was just burned out when the car got a certain point of what should have been enjoyment of the car.

The TOG's will not clear the trunk area. The SLP's will. TOG redesigned the output area because to many GTP's had banging exhaust in reverse. I hate the new design. Its all wrong for the Fiero area to work with. I made it work of course on this install, but I did cut the trunk at the bottom 4 inch mark. I might as well to have cut at the first recess however. I had to stand the muffler up, and this ate up alot of area for the exhaust to work out in. I love the TOG's for fit and function, but they are a pain to work with in a Fiero. I get the TOG's from ZZP. They have become and excellent one stop shop for 3800sc products.

SLP has a 1.75 and 1.625 tube. So, in the future I will work with these. I can work with the output better on this setup. However, the down side to SLP is the crossover tube. It is difficult to get sealed of no leaks.

Loyde, have you used the WCF headers? I like the fact that they keep the stock exhaust routing. That looks like it would clear up any fitment issues and allow for easy fitment of both a catalytic converter and a good muffler.

Man 10 days, what took you so long, wouldnt happen to be the familar sound of the Nextel slowing you down would it? Would be nice to be able to jump into a project and be done 10 days later but for some reason that is never the case for me. But I guess speed comes with experiance and with only one swap under my belt, I have a long ways to go. Looks good as usual, cant really say much more than I have in the past. Like another member said, Loyde has a vast knowledge of the 3800 and is always willing to help out in the question department, trust me I know. Cant wait to see Will's car and have another 3800SC in the DFW. See you this weekend at the show if it doesnt get flooded out from Rita.

Heya Loyde,

I need A/C lines to run around my WCF headers, but all I have is my old Fiero metal lines. Would you still be able to help me out if I pay any added expense from getting whatever else you need?

Your Friend,
Greg

The RULE rules... Well, that is what ZZP provides with the Stage 2 kits. I have never had any problems with it.

Model Number 203FC puts out 700 GPH for about $32 online.

Have I used them? Well, I trip to the projects page at http://www.fastfieros.com/projects will show I have indeed used several sets of these.

WCF provides a point A to B solution of exhaust exit in the fashion of the Fiero V6 as it is today. This does not mean it is made to performance levels however given the space needed to work with, and the size of tubes.

I wrote this big long explanation of headers like tubes and coatings.. but it to much based on opinion and install facts. Does not mean it is 100%, so I will just not post the information.

Well, I top'ed off the car with the decklid, and ice cold AC today. Little paint in the engine area, and clean up some wires.

Rear shot of the muffler just barely hanging down.
