the 80's seem to be not worth the troubles they present. They might be good up to 300 horsepower, but anything past that, is basicly a wash, as there are no performance parts for it.

A 4t65e-hd has been built by GM to handle 1000 horsepower, and local rebuild compaines like ZZPerformance offer decently built versions of the gm transmission for reasonable prices.

About 1/2 the northstar swaps use the 4t80e. There's nothing tricky about installing it.

That said, I don't think you're going to get 700 ft lb through one. There have been some discussions about this, and the conclusion is that vehicle weight has little to do with the stress on a transmission. 300 ft-lb into the transmission and 3000 ft-lb out of it. Weight just determines how long the torque will be needed.

oh ok thanks the performance tranny looks good, to bad they dont make a manual that can handle it.
so if the weight of the car has nothing to do with the max tourqe what about in a turbo app if i set the boost to come in late in the power band AK when the car is already going down the track.
would it be ok to run a tranny that has a 300tq rating? so at 2000rpm the engine has 300tq and at 6000rpm the engine has 500tq or would that not help anything.

thanks for your posts peps, i plan on keeping u updated on the 3.6l VVT swap that should be starting as soon a i get a transmission or decide to go with the 5spd.

There are 2 things that destroy trannies.... Shock loading (jumping on the gas with drag radials) and high power during shifts.

A turbo would fix the shock loading, but then you might have a problem with the shifts if you can't retard the timing or kill the boost.
