I was just looking at the new threads and boy has the 3800 gained a sh!t ton of interest. I guess if you can't beat em.....then...well. Not that I am mad about this just glad to see.
yea when i think about when i was a lurker, it was all v8's (and i loved when one guy did a diesel swap, and it worked..) now performance v6's are more popular and the v8's are getting crazy! (LS1's northstars etc)

Its just the new swap that is going around these days. Back in the day it was the V-8 swap and also the 3.4 was very popular. In 3 years it will be the LSX swap that is going to become a norm and another swap will be the new swap. As technology changes so will swaps, well for most of us.

4.9 (in progress) SC3800 (planning stages) 3.4TDC (long ways off) Northstar (longer ways off) Turbo Ecotech (how did that get in there?!) hehe, 250+HP on stock internals with a 69lb block, should make a very nimble and quick car. The only down side, 4 cylinders. I have no interest in an SBC except maybe an LSx motor. The ones I've driven just didn't impress me and felt sluggish in the corners. I do have a race prepped 327 that could go into one but I just dont have the interest as of yet. Also trying to talk the Harley shop owner out of one of the sprint car motors. 680HP in a small block (Stevenson Race Motors). That I think I could handle.
Never could figure out what those ghostly images were in this pic? Let me assure you the motor was not smoking or even running at the time and haden't been for a couple days.
One more special project on the drawing board is 3 Harley Twin Cam V-twins mounted to make a high revolution V6. But at 2000 per motor cost would be through the roof. Unique, but worth the money?
Gonna be busy over the next few years. The fieros are ready to go but I still need the motors except the 4.9 that is.
I think this forum shows the ability of some of the fiero owners. If the motor has been made then most likely someone has tried to put it into a fiero. You just don't see that on other forums non fiero related.

I have a V8 now, I would like a nice 4 to drive every day while I fix the rest of my car.
The SC3800 is a kick ass motor, I would love to have one. I have the V8 because I was in the right place at the right time. Dosent mean I wouldnt have done one later. I think a V8 fits me, once the body work is finished the rest of the car will as well.
If I could go back in time I would go back 24 years and buy the 72 Cuda and never give a Fiero a second look. But now that I have looked I wouldnt trade it, dosent matter what motor it has.

I would love an auto 3800SC for daily driving. But for real torque and at cruise night the V8 is the ticket. I attend a very large local cruise night (250-300 mainly american muscle cars!) and when I drive around the parking lot to the lot entrance I can see everybody turning the head to see what the hell sounds so nice and their expression when they see the tiny Fiero coupe. When I park and I always get a crowd coming to see. Sorry but a 3800SC would never do that there.

Me too. I stoped at the wrecking yard on a whim one day and there was a fastback fiero there. Got all my conversion parts and lots others. While I was there I had a look around and they had about 15 4.x series caddies there. The guy told me 225 for engine, ECM, and wiring harness. Went back a couple weeks later and pulled my engine . Total came to 203 and I got a ton of other fiero parts thrown in on the deal. With a rebuild, performance cam, porting and the cost of the install I will have a V8 fiero for less then 1200 including the car itself. I've spent more then that on 2.8 rebuilds alone. Wasn't my first choice but like you said, "right time, right place". I totaled it up and came to about 3000 worth of stuff that I pulled from that yard in those couple days. The best part.... I only spent 350.
Honestly, I'm not biased towards any motor. 4-6-8 doesn't really matter. As long as its faster then the original Fiero V6 is.

I think the Fiero is better suited to a higher revving engine than a torque monster beast. If I wanted to go fast in a straight line I wouldn't use a Fiero. I actually think brakes and suspension are more important than engines in Fiero's. It should be "PFF's brake and suspension forum"

The car has 12 inch corvette brakes all around,the rotors are drilled and grooved,it has tubular suspension with coil overs on all corners and I never said what the primary use for the car was,but I imagine it would give a good accounting for itself in the twisties(with the limit of performance being the drivers(my) ability).It will be used on the street with an occasional trip down the drag strip.

I agree with this 110%...
If you look through the archives, the 3.4 pushrod was extremely popular, and so was the TPI and LT1 V8. Times change, and technology improves, but it's all pretty much the same story. Only the names are changed to protect the innocent.

In my truck they notice the deep V8 rumble first then the blower with open hood. I wish I could add one to the Fiero V8 but then that would be just insane.

It all depends on what you want the car to excell at. I have absolutely no interest in taking any of my cars to a drag strip so handling is much more important IMO. I do enjoy a nice start from the light but, a drag racer I'm not.

I go to the local U-pull yards. They dont charge as much if you pull the parts yourself. It all depends on the area you live in also. Within about 30 minutes of me is about 20 u-pull yards to choose from. I usually just try to find the ones the farthest out of town because they just dont care as much about the prices. I've got one about 10 min from the house that is the best priced in town and has all the motors I could ever want. I was staring at an Aurora 4.0 V8 when I pulled my 4.9. So tempting! Just lucky I guess.

Honestly any motor can have its advantages. Go out and drive. Then figure the motor that fits you driving habits. Like to take low speed corners at high speed? Get a motor with lots of low end torque. Want to take corners at 100+ MPH? Get a DOHC high RPM screamer. Want to drive in a straight line (fiero Blastphamy IMHO) get the motors that dont stop pulling til you shift. Too many motors, too many choices. For me one motor just wont cut it. I need an assortment.

I wasn't saying this forum is or isn't for a particular engine, but that when I first started reading on here damn near all concern was about SBC swaps. Then it seemed to be about 3.4 swaps. Now it seems to be about 3800s. I can only hope for the day lt or ls swaps become common swaps like the 3.8s.

I started racing in those 'sprint cars' in Oklahoma where they call them Super Modifieds. Ours was a 301 (bored 283) and it ran fantastic. I moved just when we started to use 327s ( my fav V8 btw). We could run it 8-9,000 rpm all season long almost always with left wheel in the air. Ive had Fieros with stock, turbo & modified, and SBC. For the wow factor V8 is the choice, even impresses Corvette guys. If I ever did another Fiero, it would be a 3800 because of the reliability / power combination. V8 just broke too much stuff too often.

Hmm, a de-evolution trend perhaps? From V8's, to V6's, then I'm sure Ecotecs will pop up more (when me, Fosgate, WFTB, and Ceti groom our setups), then in a decade it will be electric. I can see it now.

The times they are a changing. In the past the only way to go fast was with with a large displacement V8 (and yes I own cars with V8 engines). However, in recent years, we've seen seen small displacement 4 cyl Honda Civics running in th 8's and 3800SC Grand Prixs running in the 9's. . This dispelled the myth that "there is no substitute for displacement" to perhaps "there is no substitute for technology" I'll grant you that in the top fuel classes displacemnt rules but go to the drag strip and watch the times that some of the sport compact guys are running and this tells a story. There is nothing wrong with a V8 Fiero if that's where your taste lies but when I do the comparison of ease of installation, cost, horsepower potential, gas mileage engine weight and 1/4 mile performance; I find the 3800SC my superior choice. Now we can always have the argument that "well I can build my V8 to be faster than your 3800SC" and this may or may not be true, so puting the flames aside, I will say I say the reasons for the 3800SC's popularity have to do with a number of different factors and many Fiero owners seem to agree. Thats why we see so many 3800 posts these days.

I would agree there are more choices today. In the past displacement was the only way...now with all the power adders a V6 can make as much power as SOME V8s. However, we all know that everything else being equal the larger engine has the potential to make even more power. An LS2 makes 400 hp right out of the box normally aspirated...put a power adder on it and it will be making 500-600 hp easy.
And the WOW factor, is pretty intangible but real. If you go to any cruise night in the world with two Fieros, one powered by a 3800sc, and the other powered by a V8, and I promise you more people will be impressed by the V8, even if the V8 doesn't make as much power.

Especially true if you are at a "mixed" show/cruise with everything from traditional hot rods to import tuner cars. The hot rod guys will walk right past the HO 4 and 6 cyl cars without a second glance.... but let them see a V8 Fiero and they'll stop and stare. Jscott1 is absolutely right, the 3800 making 300 HP could be parked right next to a 305 SBC Fiero making 175 HP, and the SBC will get the attention. My car used to have a turbo 6, and it gets a LOT more attention at the Saturday night show now with the LS-2.
I'm not knocking 4s or 6s (I have a few issues with the duke however). V8s will draw the crowd.

I love the deep sound of a V8 But I also liked the rumble of my V6 when I had it set up right. Here are some sound clips of my cars The top one was my 2.8 The bottom is the V8 in my GT
