It would also be helpful, because of the size of the thread, if there was a gallery of all the pictures. This is an amazing looking car.

Actually I do own a double garage show here:

Kudos to you for juggling such a potentially cataclysmic situation, but I think you're nuts to do so.

Personally, I've been considering the merits of chemical castration. Turning gay isn't an option for me, but women tend to sap life force directly from my soul. And yet, I'm addicted to them. A few thousand of the hits on the "Girls with Fieros" thread are probably mine... ARGH!

Chemical castration pills might be the answer. I'd not have to cut anything off, and yet I'd be able to focus more emotional energies on my Fiero obsession, with less distraction.

(See? You guys thought this post was going to be totally off-topic, and I brought it right back to FIEROS! Ha Ha!)

OK!

Wow-I re-read the whole build thread and finally finished the Table of Contents at the top of this page (55)
Then I read the manuals I got from Bubba on the Dellorto carbs and the HPV1 DIS system to get more familiar with them.
Now that the Roadster is driveable, I am ready to start working on getting the Exotic on the road.

Going to start by securing the dash panel so I can book an appointment to have the windshield installed.
Then I'll be removing and cleaning all the carbs (car sat for about 18 months) and then adjust shifter linkage.

I'm so happy for you. I'm even happier you put Indy in the sig. A lot of people don't realize the Northstar stretch is an Indy. If it were me I would put the decals on just so everyone would know this is the baddest Indy on the block.

I must say I was confused when fiero2m8 kept referring to himself as the owner of the car in other threads (I figured bubbajoe had changed usernames for some reason), this is my first reading of the transfer. Bubba, I don't know if I would have been able to make the same decision you did (I'm sure it wasn't easy), but I'm glad to see 'the torch' passed on. Truely an amazing piece of work!

I know the car has a good home and that made it easer for me to let it go
when the body wont do what you want it to do you have to make changes that you have to live with

I think the N* needs an aero nose and an original indy paint / schema (with leather interior of course)

now that migh throw a few people for a loop....
anyone want to photoshop that?

Thanks guys for the kind words!
Yes I'm very excited and my head is spinning on what I have planned for it.

jscott1 - indy door decals might be a little over the top for my taste but that may change.
I do plan on installing the front Indy emblem Bubba gave me and using Mr Mike to help restore the Indy seats.

As far as colour scheme, since I'm leaving the mouldings intact and everything bolt on, my first idea was like a McLaren F1 paint.
Maybe silver above the moulding and black below with Bubba's black roof - photoshoppers please show me this idea and variations.

On the aero nose issue I don't know - I like that it is original to the Indy and helps balance the length.
But I like the custom air dam and think it matches the side skirts nicely.

On the rear I preferred some of the other designs from forum members, like this one:




I like the functionality and craftmanship of Bubbajoe's design, but I think it's too big for me - solution might be to trim it back a little.
As far as the spoiler, I have a couple issues with it as it doesn't follow the edge of the glass and is a little to long towards the sail panels but I'm sure it can be tweaked to my personal taste. Should the sail panel become scoops? (I'm not a fan of fake ones so they'd have to have a purpose)

BMW Mini fender lights - I like them but don't need dual marker indicator lights so they may be changed to clear ones or to just vents.

Dash, Console, Shifter, Brakes, Rear Suspension, Powertrain, Rims, Side skirts, flared fenders and rad scoops - I love them (no changes planned here)

Front Suspension - do I install the lowering springs and poly or try to complete what Bubba started for the front end coilover suspension?

First order of business is to provide TLC to the carbs as they sat with fuel in them for 18mths so they are going to be removed, cleaned and re-jetted along with other tune-up items.
This weekend I'm getting a mechanic over to give me a list of what to do to pass the safety.
Bubbajoe - hoping to see you tomorrow if I'm not to busy, I'll call you in the morning.

sand it and paint it the way it is .i think bubbajoe got it right .why change it without seeing what it would look like the way it is now ? if i hadnt of been slacking off in watching my fav threads , i would have beat you to toronto .make sure the car is in the GF's name so the ex cant force it on you .good luck with the project , i know you will do right by it .

Thanks guys for the feedback - I was interested in hearing opinions on how to finish the project.
I just got back from a Vacation in Daytona Beach and while there I took some pictures of a stock Indy for sale for comparision reference:




Today I removed all the Dellortos carbs and gave them a good cleaning.
While apart I replaced the idle jets with some smaller ones and tinkered with the mixture settings.
I think it's going to take some time to dial and sync them, but I got it starting and idling good in the driveway tonight with no backfiring or popping.
Checking the plugs after a road test should give me some more info to match up with the tips in the manual.
Here are the pictures:

The air cleaners and velocity tubes removed:




The fuel lines and linkages disconnected so the carbs could be removed from the intake:




Since they are new to me, I numbered them so they went back on the same cylinders as they are left and right units:




The jets and velocity tubes were cleaned:




I cleaned the Dellortos with Lacquer Thinner inside and out:




Everything has been reassembled and is running again and I'm glad I got familiar with the Dellortos.
Next I'll be working on the shifter linkage adjustment and getting all the exterior lighting done.

paint the flipin' think like you'd like and logo / decal / badge is as an indy. it'll be perfect. Even if it we're competition orange or perl .... just logo / decal it as an indy.

Mother's Day was the first drive around the neighbourhood - MAN THIS BEAST GETS ALOT OF ATTENTION!!!

A couple things to add to the "To do" list.

1. reshim the starter
2. more adjustment on the shifter cable necessary
3. more carb tuning required

Most impressive part of the test drive had to be the first time I hit the brakes!
I almost put my head through the windshield because it stopped about 30 feet prior to the stop sign

Sorry guys for the lack of updates, but having two Fiero projects slows you down a little

Sorry - not that far along yet, but I'll post a video when I've got better driveability.

Tonight I installed new spark plugs, turned the initial timing back to zero and used the carb unisync to balance the idle speed of the carbs.
All but one of 8 are the same with the eighth needing the air bypass setup.
I tried both the 65 idle jets and the 52 jets.
The 65's idled nice with the new plugs but seemed very rich when the throttle was depressed with black smoke out the exhaust.
The 52's seemed too lean as the 2 carbs furthest from the fuel source would occasionally pop or snap at idle.
I think I need some idle jet sizing in between the 65's and 52's too try as the mixture screws can't change the mixture that much.

I doubled checked plug wire lengths, firing order, plug gaps, HPV-1 timing adjustments and everything looks good.
The new spark plugs gapped at .032 seemed to cure the misfire I was getting with fouled plugs (before the carbs were cleaned).

Thanks BubbaJoe for the tip on adjusting the shifter linkage (new to me as the Roadster is an automatic).




I'm going to adjust the allen bolt tomorrow to give my neighbour a break from all the starting and revs in the driveway

Some progress made this afternoon - slow but steady.

I removed the starter and slotted the holes a little - I've improved it quite a bit but am going to try again when I find all my starter shims.

This morning I ran into the Snap-On tool rep at Purolator, so I picked up this drill set:




I experimented with a set of #46 idle jets that are much too small for my engine and drilled them out to 60's.
I inserted the jet into the dremmel and hand tightened the chuck over it to center it, then at med-low rpm drilled 8 of them out:




I am pleased to report that the starting, idling and revving were drastically improved (smooth with no snapping or black smoke)
If the car ever makes it on the road this year, I am going to bring it over to John's Bug Shop to assist me with the fine tuning and carb sync.



On to the clutch - or lack of it from sitting I guess.
I bled the master cylinder and the slave and it's working again, not as great as I'd like, but I did get alot of air out of it.
I'm going to see how it is after alot of use before throwing money at it.

Next I experimented with the shifter to get more gears working.
Thanks to Bubbajoe's tip, I adjusted the allen bolt to reach the forward throw gears:




I now have reverse and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd working smoothly.
I still can't move the shifter far enough to the right - even with the cable disconnected to reach 4th and 5th - near cable was disconnected in pic:




It feels like it is hitting something under the console, so I'll have to investigate that before trying the highway
Going to switch to lighting and finishing the dash this long weekend

the alen head screw ajusts for anf aff and side to side as well once you get for and aff attach vise grips to the end of the shat loosen the alen screww and ajust the shaft for side to side movement
the shaft has for aft righ left rotation for all the gears

Before the windshield goes in, I needed to finish the dash trim - Bubbajoe had already modded the shape, I just sanded, primed and painted it:




I wanted to work on the car from underneath - so I found out that the cars balance point is at the rear jack points.
Now I can tilt the car to any angle and secure with jackstands at the ends




I'd like to upgrade the condition of the front suspension, but since the goal is to drive it soon, I am going to swap in the lowering springs for now and save the rest as a winter project:




The rear tires need replacing so rims have been removed and I was able to get my first good look at the rear C5 Corvette brake and suspension upgrade - truly amazing.
I might raise the ride height a bit depending of how far the front drops with the new lowering springs:




Does this look right or is this how the front plate holder is supposed to be mounted on the 87/88 bumper?

Dash trim panel is installed - you can see in the reflection, I countersunk five screws that will be finished and painted.
Now the motorized T.V. under the dash air bag cover opens freely.
I still need to finish the sides of the dash where the larger Firebird pillars were.
Going to hold off making trim pieces until I decide where all the speakers will go (not a priority right now as the engine is music enough)

This is one of those cars that needs to be seen to be appreciated. There's a bit of work to be done but with hard word and a bit of luck everyone at the 25th show will be able to see it. Wish I was able to get a ride in this one too! Sounded great in person (after it warmed up) and I'm sure the neighbors aren't looking forward to the day when you start driving it often.

I felt bad it was up on jacks during your visit, but it motivated me to get it roadworthy for the 25th.
Not sure what I'm bringing, but I figure I've doubled my chances of having at least one ready to go by then.
My girlfriend wants to ride with me to Michigan, so I'll keep your offer to drive in mind

Tired from sanding the Roadster all afternoon yesterday, so today I got going on a few things the Indy needs.

I removed the stock front springs today - first time I've removed full length ones, but the unbolting of the lower ball joint method worked sweet!
The Corvette calipers seem to contact the shock mount reducing the turning radius - do you guys live with that or what fix did you do?:




Here are the old shocks to be replaced - they were just as shot as the original ones on the Roadster:




Here is a comparison of the Indy springs vs. the new lowering springs.
I'm keeping the old ones because they might end up on the Roadster to gain some ground clearance...




I temporarily removed the air diverter to gain easy access to the gearbox from underneath:




Now I have all gears after freeing up the shaft exiting the gearbox that was sticking (probably from sitting).
The adjustments have been made fore/aft and side/side, so the allen head set screw has been tightened in the new spot.
Once you can watch the linkage while it is being shifted, it's easy to adjust by sliding and rotating the shaft with the set screw loose.




Now the bad news

1. I cracked the winshield moving it by myself instead of being patient and waiting for help - It cracked in mid air when I was turning it to lay it on cardboard!
2. While adjusting the stick shift, I noticed the slave cylinder is leaking fluid through the adapter plate which would explain why the bleeding didn't work that well. (It's just a Fiero slave I need, right?)

Well, one good thing with two projects is when you get tired of one you can switch to the other! Don't feel bad about not giving me a ride in the Indy, just get it going!! If things were different I would have helped you with the windshield, bleeding, maybe a little sanding and taken you up on your other offer.

Yes Gokart Mozart, it is VERY true!
Rather than get frustrated and quit working, I just switch to the other - it's great as they both have to fight for my attention

Here is a video I shot tonight of the exterior lighting wiring nearing completion
Kudos to techsupport from Bubbajoe - his tips saved me a lot of trial and error time wiring his lighting innovation!
