I just want to vent on this subject!

I went to the BMV this afternoon to register my 84 Fiero for Antique Plates and was told I would have to wait another year. They stated that Antique plates are for cars MORE than 25 years old. I told the lady that my Fiero was MORE than 25 years old..its 25 years and 22 days old. Well she gave me the evil eye and sent me away holding my bill of sale and my antique auto insurance card.
I thought maybe I could find a loop hole but no luck so far.

What does your state think is an Antique Auto and what is with the ~more than 25 year old~ rule. I think this is so dumb! GRRRRRR

Thanks for listening. John

thing is....the historical/antique plates thing states it cant be used for a daily driven car. So not sure if some cops might beef over it if you daily drive or drive the car often.

I agree mark...it is BS. Ive already read the by- laws on the website for Maine BMV. Ive been to the branch office and will check my local town hall to get my antique plates. I went to the branch office because I was going to get a custom tag. Now I will get normal antique tags at the local if they will let me and then order the custom on_line

I did send an E-mail to the Augusta BMV to Richard Nickless
Senior Section Manager
Bureau of Motor Vehicles
Vehicle Services Division
Augusta, ME 04333-0029

and he didnt clearfy anything... I asked him to explain in detail what MORE than 25 years meant. If indeed my 84 Fiero could be registered. This is what I got:

Thank you for your interest and inquiry about an antique auto registration and the associated motor vehicle law. An antique auto" means an automobile or truck manufactured in or after model year 1916 that is:

A. More than 25 years old;
B. Equipped with an engine manufactured either at the same time as the vehicle or to the specifications of the original engine;
C. Substantially maintained in original or restored condition primarily for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades or other functions of public interest;
D. Not used as its owner's primary mode of transportation of passengers or goods;
E. Not a reconstructed vehicle;
F. Not an altered vehicle; and
G. Garaged and maintained in Maine.

As part of the registration process, you are required to complete an affidavit certifying that the vehicle and your intended use meets the legal definitions I described above. You start the registration process by going to your municipality of residence and paying excise tax. Most municipalities can issue registrations and plates. If not, you can go to your local BMV branch office, but Maine residents must pay vehicle excise tax first.

I wont persue this office until I check with my local . Seems to me the state makes up things to get excise tax out of us. Grrrrrrrrrr
Now I have to wait until Monday....
John

This Fiero is going to be used for that purpose....club events and car shows. Here, you have to sign a paper stating thats what it will be used for only. But if I do happen to get in an accident or something, how do they know I wasnt going to a garage or heading to an event. I do belong to two different clubs.

So now I wonder if anyone in NY has an antique plate on their Fiero. John

Here's the rule in Florida :

“Antique” tag with light blue background “ANTIQUE” plate if the modified or unmodified car, truck or motorcycle was manufactured in 1946 or later AND is 30 years old or more, AND equipped with an engine of 30 years old or more.

I wonder what they consider 'altered'.

I would take the paper work in and fight it too, just out of principle. It may take a year to do it ad be academic by that point but a least you fought for your rights.

Update!!!

I finally got around to going to the local town hall and got the 84 registered as an Antique Auto!!!

I asked the lady if "this" would qualify and she said "of course, its 25 years old" .

Success!

I even put the plate on the Fiero, well sort of...LOL
