generally the title speaks for itself, but i am peeking around to go look at an Indy Fiero and wanted to know if there are any surefire ways of clarifying that an Indy is a real Indy other than the vin? Maybe decal placement, or anything on the exterior or interior that would make it a dead give away? I know there are some die hard Indy purists on here right? i will say that the one im currently scouting at has a 2.8 swapped into it so motor info won't be much use..

Most people won't have taken the time to convert a different 84 as you'd have a lot to swap...but it could happen. If someone wanted to do it, it'd be pretty hard to tell though if done right...even the VIN list may not be verified?? I think most of them are visual documentation only...

I have one that I guarantee is original for sale. It has only 5k original miles and needs paintwork. Until recently, it had been in a barn since 1986. I've gone through a lot of the mechanicals and have it running well again. I can finish it through paint/decals, but I'll take $5399 for it before the paint is finished. Red carpet, Red seat insets w/Indy logo ghosted on backrest, correct door decals, flat/solid panels over air cleaner/battery, enamel badges front/sides, white wheels, correct trim above rockers, gray leather steering wheel, red/gray door panels, stainless steel exhaust (oops! yours swapped for a 2.8), paint code should be for white, GT nose required, Indy Fiero decal on trunk lid, MUST be an '84. and, I don't know, but I have never seen a pace car without a sunroof, that I recall....?

Out of everything listed above, the Fiero Indy badges are the first thing I would look for.
Although, I had the foresight to procure a complete set, way back when they were still available.
(And NO, they are NOT for sale!).
So, I guess, a bootleg Indy is entirely possible...

Look at a certified, honest to goodness Indy Fiero, the RED carpet a unique look to it, study the texture, 'coarse'.
It's a molded, one piece unit that fits the chassis like a glove.
THAT would be hard to duplicate in both color, texture AND fit.
There is always the old Corbin guide that might help you also....

thats true, but a long term plan for my 85GT was to possibly convert it to an indy clone so thats what sparked my whole curiosity as to this one's authenticity..but sorry pacethis, the one im looking at happens to be local and thats the only reason im considering adding another car to the stable..

Look on your RPO sticker on the inner front fender on the driver's side. Look for Y82 in the RPO codes. THAT is the Indy Pace Car package.

The Pace Car is essentially still the fully-optioned white 2M4 SE it started out as. The Indy Package (RPO Y82) added a new Aero-nose fascia, ground effects, new rear fascia and wing with interior and exterior cosmetic packages. There were a couple cosmetic touches on its stock 4-cylinder 92hp "Iron Duke" engine and dual exhaust added. Other than a choice of automatic or manual transmission, all the Indy models that were produced were identical and performed the same as any other "Iron Duke" Fiero.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, this implies that all Indys were optioned the same.
What about presence or absence of A/C and/or door pockets. I've seen them with and without both.
I'm sure there were other options that could be added or deleted.

As stated by Fierosound - RPO Code Y82. Nothing else matters.

All the different options - door pockets, A/C, etc could be changed. There are many Indys out there that have different options.

Only a TRUE Indy will have Y82. If it is not there...it ain't an Indy. If it the RPO Code sticker has been lost...well it can't be proven that it is one. It could easily be a clone (with a V6 in it I would guess it is a clone). If the RPO isn't there...don't pay "Real Indy" price for it.

I own www.FieroPaceCar.com and it is a very helpful sight for this type of information. I have the vin list to verify if your car is real and what number order it was built Also have the Race Track car list now and can verify if your car was at Indy and who drove it along with many other things.

The problem is the page took a dive the other day and I tried to resurrect it but it appears someone may have hacked into it. I am in the process as I type to get it up and running with a new format and a completely new photo hosting set up that will allow members to post there own links. If you have the VIN you can get a reproduction window sticker from GM historical services, but that's kind of expensive for a car you are thinking of buying.

i will try getting the one near doylestown pa at a gas station this week im going to be making an offer as it hasnt moved in over a year and a half and is beautiful still (well the last time i stoped) he said hes waiting on a gas tank and has said that for the past year lol he needs to stop bullshitting

rpo decals 'could' be faked I suppose--if someone wanted to go to that much trouble. And, it is possible to clone an Indy from any of the early models, perhaps from any rolling chassis.

At least verify it is an 84 if the rpo is missing. The quickest telltale sign that it is an 84 (besides the vin#) is the extra set of relays on the left side of the engine compartment firewall--near the left decklid hinge..

hey, actually the car im looking at is on SuperchargedV6's list. its car 1903 in Tucson. it shows it as a 3.4 swap, but i thought it was only a 2.8. Thats exciting to know!

The available literature generally says all 2000 Indy's were the same. My understanding is that all Indy's started out at fully-loaded SE models and should have all the "standard" SE options, THEN have the Indy package options added. The NIFE Fiero Enthusiasts Guide has a included option list for the various models and my Indy seems to match the list (all SE options and all Indy add ons).

Our general observational skills tell us that not all Indys are the same. Manuals and autos are the most obvious difference. Some have map pockets and some don't. Some had cruise, some didn't... There are probably a half dozen other differences.

i wish i could tell you a vin number but i was discussing with my dad about indys and in the mid 90s one would go to the dr's across the street from us(levittown pa) and also in 96 or 7 there was one in a junkyard picked clean of all the interior stuff he was going to grab.

My Indy doesn "NOT" have power windows,, power door locks, rear window defroster or cruise. My RPO codes show this and many Indy's are different. SE did not mean all the option as many think.

Also there were Manual transmissioned Indy's at the track as I have them on the Track car list. Another thing is so far it is 50/50 on manual to auto transmissions so there seems to not be more of one over the other.

This is why I started www.FieroPaceCar.com and hope it helps people to understand the Pace car better. Rick B

Yeah, mine has power windows, but did not come with power door locks, rear window defogger or cruise.

i won't know for sure what all options this one has until i go look at it (this Sunday!!!) all i can report on that suject is that it does not have A/C. yea here in Az that'll suck a bit, but then again i dont really use it in my 85 GT, just cruise windows down and sunroof open.

Jane had an 84 se. So do I (non-Indys)
Her's--pwr windows, no pwr locks, a/c, cruise, no sun roof, automatic-no courtesy lights under the dash, no light in front storage compt, no rear defog..
Mine-manual windows, no pwr locks, yes to sunroof, yes to courtesy lights under dash, 4 spd, yes to a/c, cruise, no to rear defog, yes to light in front storage compt.

Both of my Indys have identical options
PW, PL, Cruise, Power Mirrors and Map Pockets.
The only difference is one is manual and one is auto.

In that case, I concede that when they say "all 2000 Indy's were the same" they must be referring ONLY to the Indy add-ons and the 92hp 4-cylinder engine.

But the Y82 code on your RPO sticker on the inner front fender on the driver's side is still the definitive identifier that "it's and Indy".

Correct and even the tires were options of black or raised white letters. All of these options are on the RPO code sheet with each car. Paying attention to this when rebuilding a Indy back to original is important. Rick B
