You guys sure know your aftermarket upgrades. And now for thinking outside the box........ I think it would be cool to take the $30k and buy a used Ferrari 308, then I would slap a FIERO or even better a MERA emblem on the nose.
Keep them wondering.
(sorry Curley, I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but I couldn't resist......no hard feellings?)
Hey, how come nobody wants to put a 400hp LS2 or a 430hp LS3 in their Fiero?
And for that matter, if you could wait a year or so, how about one of those nice little 6.2 liter supercharged LS9 engines that cranks out 620hp? (Boy would that be a rush) If only we could get a transaxle that could stand up to the hp and torque.

For me who has spent over that... I would just have waited for someone else who has done the same, and choose to sell their car and avoid the wait! (1+ years for the interior, 1 year for the motor swap, now around 3 years at Norm's) *Not saying that it isn't worth it, but gas has over doubled since last I drove it!
But to answer your thread, I would do everything that I have done... Norm's front C6 flipper, 12" Wilwood brakes, Held front slalom suspension, 88 rear cradle + suspension, coil-overs, modified 3800 SII SC, custom interior, dietmar rocker scoops, custom side scoops, Mr. Mike's seats, Dakota digital gauges, Ronal LZ wheels with P-Zero's, front mount battery, etc.
Madcurl, Thanks for revitalizing this thread. Still cleverly avoids my initial question, but I didn't really expect an answer!
$30,000? I too would use Arch Rival as the sexy twenty-something starving art student model. She's hot, so from an exterior body perspective, I'd do exactly that! Just wish I knew what's invested!
But since I DON'T KNOW what kind of bite that would be into the $30k budget, I'd have to build it up from my current LS4 project on my 87' GT 5sp Fiero, where I've already got about $17K invested in the following:
LS4 V8 5.3L Engine Ported Heads HPTuning Software Custom Exhaust with C6 Corvette Tips Custom Forced Air Induction
Reconditioned and powder-coated control arms all around Recond' and powder-coated spindles New Front Ball joints and rear & front tie rods Rear HD Sway Bar WCF performance springs and rear coilover kit w/ Koni Shocks and Struts Complete Poly-U bushing kit all around
Mr Mike Leather Vette seats All Interior dash/door/trim repainted to match seats New Black Carpet New headliner and vinyl fire wall 180mph speedo kit DIC computer from Grand Prix Remote Key Start Keyless Entry Kit
So, if I can do the exterior Arch Rival treatment for less than $10,000 (I doubt it!) that would leave $2000 for a Matte Black Satin w/ high gloss black adidas-like racing stripes end to end, and $1000 left to spend in a stereo/sirrus radio upgrade.

Wide expensive rubber, as wide as it gets without rubbing or going widebody. Larger rims to accept said expensive rubber. Biiig brakes, as big as said rims will allow. Coilovers all around, something that will lower the car and track/drag race well. Swaybars front and back, for flat performance handling. An LLT swap, GMs 3.6L direct injection DOHC V6, and about 8-10PSI on a Garrett GT. Engine management to handle said tasty V6/turbo. The best standard transmission I could find. A bigger gas tank! Hood vent for high speed foolery. Roll cage for high speed foolery. And lastly a skid plate, for those days you have to rally the car! =P
Everything else is perfect...

You youngin's... since you "love" you're beloved Fiero so much, what type of modification would you apply to your Fiero if you had say..hypothetically had 30k to modernize the Fiero? I'm looking for comments from those whos ages are between 17-25 yrs old. Please leave the excusses, I'd never change it cause it's a relic, 13" rims are my friend, and K-fed comments at home...stick to the question dang nab bit.
Keep in mind, you have to use extisting Fiero companies and various products that can be used for the Fiero and not some type pipe-dream out of this world ideas. 30K?
Engine. Which type?
Suspension. Brakes, which size?
Exterior body modification: What type, wide-body....
Rim/tires. Which type, size?
Which ones do you think would have the greastest "pop" in giving the Fiero greater exposure? A good exposure IMO was Kooljess's car featured in a upcomming movie and jscott's in Staying Alive. Both cars, although it only reveiled mostly the exterior gave the newbees something to think about.
Okay, if you really wanted to modernize it...and spend 30k, that's a lot of spare change...
I'd probably go ultra custom for modernization and start over from scratch. Probably find a C5 Corvette donor and rework the frame to go midengine (shouldn't be too hard), then dress the body onto the frame as desired. Of course, it's not technically a Fiero any more, but it could be made to be quite convincing. You'd get a lot of advantages in the way of a modern frame, and could keep aspects such as airbags to your liking. You could have modern suspension that would outhandle most sports cars on the road today, with big brakes as well. A suitable donor would cost about 10k, and you could sell a number of parts off of that to recoupe some of the investment. That'd leave you with a sizeable budget still for the build and body, giving a modern interpretation of a mid-engine Fiero...
Sorry, just can't think of another way to spend 30k on a Fiero that really makes sense...Fiero's are really quite heavy for their size (ever pick up a Fiero door vs a modern corvette door?)

I still want a supercharged ecotec. The new turbo Cobalts are sounding pretty good with over 260hp. If I knew more about how to properly set up turbos I would be more likely to use one ...or two.

First off I'd finish my 85GT convertible project, and install a turbo Ecotec with an auto in it. I would also like to do an LS4 swap but that might end up being too hard on gas. For body mods something similar to the "perfect union" custom style for my 87 3.4L turbo looks great for my taste. Heck now I'm at $50K !!!!

i would start off with a very clean 87 gt v8 archie v8 kit 327 block get custom titanium rods made, forged pistons, stick a big cam in it,aluminum heads, gear drive, vintage crossram with 2 holly's get everything including the heads painted chevy orange while leaveing the aluminum cross ram natural. 8500rpm redline straight 3 inch exaust build 5 speed
exterior i love the imsa kit with standard front fenders no deck lid to see the badass sbc sitting sideways. mold the little fog/marker lights on the front bumper smooth otherwise a stock body 5% tint cragar 15x12 s/s on m&h slicks in the rear 15x7 on 215's paint it gloss black with a little mooneyes(you older guys will know what it is) logo right in front of the doors tinted tails
suspension i cant think of the company if you guys do feel free to add. it converts the front to tubular arms and coils west coast fiero rear coil overs with konis front and rear sway bars
interior neon srt-4 seats with 5 point harness's sun super tach grant gt wheel custom hurst shifter
ill add my new style fiero tomrrow but i would love to see a vintage style one like this done and i will have a cross rammed 327 in a gt someday

Okay, maybe it's not 30k mod, but atleast somebody is thinking out of the box.
The Mad-Arch wide body w/350Z glass. IMO for a bubble top it's the better of the three styles out there for a Fiero. Why? For starters, the glass is smaller compared to the Finale and it doesn't use the bigger and flatter 300Z glass. Granted, I would've pulled the C-pillars inward for a curvature flow.
As noted on #020 I would ramp-up the sail window (smaller window) for a sleek flow backwards. No need to leave no stone left unturned. ------------------

well i guess i'll go now? im 19 i have a 1987 3.8 sc GT in reality my fiancee (<--- yes im 19 and getting married ya i know im nuts) hates my car and i cant spend a dime on it.... so ill fantasize here first i would buy the new cradle Dave held ROCKER cradle for a longitudinal swap, next would be the Transmission i would either use an Audi or a Porsche trans but it would have to be Hardened everything top notch, then the motor, i would get a 3.8 sc however the block would be bored .20 over with forged pistons, i would have ported aluminum heads, electric water pump, maybe a custom cam for my motor set up or an xpz with 1.7 roller rockers, i would like to keep my ported Gen 3 blower but because you said current and my top secret project is still under wraps until done I'd go for 2 T-70 turbo tectonics turbo's for a Twin Turbo motor upwards of 700 WHP baby, now over that beast of a motor i would do a stretched W body fiero maybe the aftermarket Vette looking nose or a custom creation, then to stop the car i would go with 13 in vette break upgrade, Rims TSW light weight spoke rims, interior uhh well has to be on the market now then, the pisa wrap around dash. reccaro racing seats and a momo steering wheel with a 4 pt role cage

Now that my poor GT has a gas leak, I've gotten more restless. The F40 6-speed tranny is on order and should be here soon. And it looks like I'll be getting an LS4 and either going with DoD if I can reprogram the chip to handle it properly, or going with another LSx intake, no DoD, and the appropriate LSx PCM programmed for manual.
As soon as I get my S10 back in commission, I'll be shopping around for a wrecked GP GXP, or associated pieces of, and start tearing the Fiero down to get ready for a total rebuild.

Well, modernizing a Fiero would really change it from being the "Fiero" that we know.
But if you're just talking suspension / mechanicals... then I'd probably start off with a fully loaded Formula.
Then I'd upgrade it with a Solstice 2.2 Turbo engine and a 6-Speed manual from the G6-GTP. I'd pretty much keep a relatively stock 88 suspension, but I'd go with tighter springs and slightly softer shocks. I'd also upgrade the brakes to something just a little bit better, but I wouldn't go crazy... just something that compared with say a Solstice GTP brake setup.
That would pretty much be it. I might make the rear window roll down, and maybe add heated seats and lumbar support (which I know came optional on 88 GTs)...
I wouldn't change too much in terms of the look and feel though... I would like to see something that looked like factory fog lamps though.
$30k you say??? hmmmm, not that I'm that young anymore. but I'd either make a Lamo Mucielago replica with some form of turbo'd v8.
or make an 88 chop top fast back (wide body kit) with a 5-speed or 6-speed manual transmission and an LS1 engine with a mild came, fully ported heads and custom headers with some nice exhaust. probably add lambo door hinges, 13" brake upgrade, aftermarket sway bars, tubular control arms, and have a Trans Am/Firebird Dash put in, but make my own center console. Also, either a removeable or electric roll down rear window. 18 " black wheels with chrome/polished lip. My color of choice for the car would be a gunmetal Silver with Silver Flake Clearcoat. oh and some low profile custom headlights too.
so who is going to write me a check ????? HAHAHAHA
