about 8 years ago I met a tree at an estimated 50mph.
carnage stains if you like.
Too bad I still have the virus
ps I love the spaceframe and these strong doors, still feels safe to me.
I am not singling out anyone here but these photos are what a 50 MPH hit look like. Some of the posts have speeds way too fast for the damage to the cars.
To survive a hit like this (especially without airbags, pre-tensiooners and in this case possibly seatbelts) is extremely rare, really makes you believe in higher powers.

Before anyone comments, Yes, I understand very well the differance between hitting a fixed object vs a car. My above statement is still true.
People do not realize how much speed they burn off in the second or two before impact sometimes. Unless the crash was reconstructed, the cops at the scene were just guessing at crash speeds.
Not trying to pick on anyone, just adding a thing or two. Keep them coming.

I have to agree with you, SCCA....if you even have time to hit the brake pedal, you have burned off a LOT of speed. If you didn't have time to hit the brake pedal, then you probably weren't paying enough attention to know how fast you were going to begin with.
At the same time....some of these pictures are a reminder of how safe a Fiero is, even though the general public thinks of them as a death trap simply because of how small they are.

Yeah, in a relatively low-speed impact--maybe 20 or 30 MPH--the weight of my hands on the steering wheel of my Escort was enough to screw up the steering column. I do wonder how much of that was due to the deployment of the air bag, though.
When I see steering wheels all bent to hell like that, though, I really get all and wonder what that did to the driver's HANDS....

I have not seen airbags cause significant deformation to steering wheels. Although that is not something that is readily identified.
The driver on this deal is welcome to correct me as I am only going by the same photos as the rest of you.
I will make an educated guess and say he was unbelted and his body deformed the wheel as he was tossed through/into the windshield. I base that comment on the seat belt being buried between the seat and the body, the deformed wheel, the severity of the impact, his broken leg (assuming that is him), and a couple other lesser known things. In a hit that hard, it is possibe he was belted (probably loosely), the seatbelt failed, or some other possibility. I am interested in whether he was or not.
As many times as I have heard people say they don't need a belt because they will grip the wheel tighter (don't laugh, people really think that way) if they see they are going to crash, I have only seen one case where someone was able to lock their hands and arms in a position to be somewhat effective. I know that happened because that persons wrists sheered as their body slammed forward essentially destroying the use of thier hands after the fact. Nasty stuff.

Dude I would go berserk on the person who hit me.....
My girlfriend was driving the car. When she called me she was hysterical. I came out to the wreck to find out what happened. When i got out of my jeep the guy immmediately apologized and kept a pretty good distance from me. I was very happy that katie wasn't hurt (other then a slight headache and stiffness a bit later) but at the same time, i'm sure he could tell i was furious. He was also mad that people ran out to help katie, but not him. She couldn't get out because the door wouldn't open (we found out later, it would, but just took quite a bit of force, but now, opens and closes just fine) So the people who saw the wreck went over and helped her out, and didn't bother checking on him. Of course his car didn't look too damaged, and it was very obvious he was at fault.

You are quite right here..! I didnt had a seatbelt on, since then I do that always before starting...its just a habit, get used to it !! The steeringwheel was not the big issue..I think I hit it with my stomach, some bruises but not that bad. My head was hurt more. The 50mph was estimated/calculated by the police, I was out When I slowly stripped the wreck during my recovery I found the other damage the fiero took, like the solid front rollbar snapped in half, the radiator area with a thickness of a dime and the firewall behind the seats ripped open from the welds...etc...it was amazing to see the impact..I am on my second life since then

This one wasn't my doing. It's the parts car I bought from a guy in Tennessee after his daughter blew a turn in the rain and put it in a ditch. She wasn't hurt at all.
It became the donor for the car in the background. (Same car in my sig.) It drove on and off the trailer and was able to be driven into my garage when I got it home.

It is sad so many cars are gone. But On a positive note even as hard as I had hit the Van my car is still on the road today will little to show it was ever in a crash. I had decided to put the T Tops in the same day I crashed. A month after it was back on the road the tops went in.

Proof, don't own a vette. The only vettes I have seen in junk yards are only half. Usally they get totaled beyond all repair. And people say Fieros are death traps.

When I started this thread I wasn't thinking about crashes, but more on broken parts. But hey this works too
Err?
quote
Think you wrecked, burned, blew up, totaled, fliped, rolled, scratched, dented, broke, tore off, just plain fubar'd a Fiero better than any one else? Post some pics and we will see, and laugh.
Wrecked? Rolled? Totalled? Sounds like crashes :-P
But if we're doing broken parts too... How about my old Isuzu gears?
Crunchy!

This is too good a thread to die just yet. Keep them coming. I believe there have been a couple members die in accidents in their Fieros, but I cannot be certain. I do however know that for there time they were extremely safe. For our current time, they are still fairly safe.

I'll post some "Getfragged" pics later on, now that I know I'm not going to try to have it rebuilt. I'm sure that there's some innards that are worthy of Ed Parks' wall of shame. Drove it 35 miles home, with a blown diff.

Here is what happens when you get caught cheating on your woman. I heard it happened while he was with the other girl, Molotov cocktail through the window. (The engine lives on in another Fiero)
