I would trade my issues for that anyday.... In addition to my Idle issue, which got progressively worse, I was struggling to get 20 mpg on pure highway. I was running hot on the way home and my radiator puked it's guts out after I got it in the garage. I think my tune is horribly messed up. My timing must be way off also.
But other than that it was a great ride.
I'm running a stock PCM with Baker Electronix VATS delete module. My engine had sat for a couple of years and when I first started it up the O2 sensor was fairly dead. I replaced that and then got the normal swing in O2 sensor voltage and started to see cross counts. While highway cruising the block learn is running about 120.

Scott, Thanks to you and Ellen for making our first round-up a warm and welcoming one. On the cruise and all the way home I had the CEL on most of the way. I haven't bother looking BUT I bet it is the wonderful code 32. I've got to repair it on both my 88s. Nothing complicated. JScott, thanks for answering all my dumb questions about the chop-top and letting me "test-fit" in your chop. Once I finish the Fino, I plan to start looking for an 88 coupe and go the route you did on the donor for chopping ( then maybe taking it to Archie).

Dang jscott1, do you always ride them hard out here and put them away wet, ? You had issues after the Kerrville Ruckus also. Tranny I believe. J/K Seems I remember you posting that you had to get Proud 1 road worthy for this year's Round Up. After hibernating at the paint shop. Maiden cruise so to speak. You did good.

Yes, I'm 2/2 in riding them hard and putting them up wet. Considering Proud-1 hasn't been substantially driven since 2005 at least it didn't come home on the flatbed.
For the tuning issue, I'm thinking of getting a stock mem-cal and Vats delete kit just to see how that runs. As for the overheat, it could just be worn out 5 year old anti-freeze. Or I haven't checked my coolant lines lately...maybe they've been crushed at one of the many shops the car has visited.
Sorry to hear that buddy, mine ran cool all the way home and the past 2 days she has gotten more attention than the DOHC. I haven't had much interest in this one lately, but after the show she really grew on me.

I just got one of the VATS delete from Baker Electronix also, about $25.00 as I recall

For the tuning issue, I'm thinking of getting a stock mem-cal and Vats delete kit just to see how that runs..
Some important prerequisites for good mileage:
O2 sensor has to be oscillating around 450 mA PCM has to be in "closed loop" PCM has to be in "learn enable"
So break out the scan tool. If the car is in closed loop and the O2 sensor is not rapidly oscillating above and below 450 mV, I'd replace the O2 sensor.
If the O2 sensor is oscillating and PCM is in closed loop and learn enable but the block learn is significantly above 128 while cruising on the highway I'd still put in a new O2 sensor.
There's a fair amount of latitude in the tune as long as the O2 sensor is accurate and the PCM has room to adjust the block learn. Plus I doubt that the VE tables were fooled with. If a tuning change was made it was probably only for power enrichment mode and that's not highway cruising.
Some people claim that the AC Delco is the only O2 sensor that works but I'm running a much cheaper Bosch and it seems to be working for me.
P.S. don't forget about the ignition timing

you 4.9 boys considered joining the Cadero Owners Forum on yahoo groups? I know it doesn't get a whole lot of traffic, but the guys on there are pretty sharp, and probably have already seen every problem your encountering. Capt Fiero is pretty active, and has done this swap a couple of times. Never hurts to ask!... and heck... with three 4.9's at the RU, and Josef644 in the process of doing one... you guys my be the kick the group needs for a little more life!
Just a thought.

I did join their group. They are as active as the 'Lone Star Fiero' group down here in Houston. I think there was a group by that name in the 80's "Asleep at the Wheel" Joe

I know the feeling. I was gonna sell mine. Actually had it sold.

I was asked a couple of times during the rally if I was really gonna sell it. I would look at it, and then look at my keys. I could not see handing them over. Anyways, I get it home and tend to a few minor issues before calling the buyer. I ask him to come over so I can go over the Fiero with him. I get to talking with him and find out he is buying it for his wife, as she wanted a small car. Well, her being older and having a bad knee, I smooth talked him out of buying my Fiero. No power steering, so low to the ground. I had not driven my 87 GT much lately, even had to up the registration for the rally. Now I don't want to sell it. Instead, I talked him into buying my 95 Buick Riviera with the 3800SC engine, .
