Earl, I am not taking any new requests but you are already on the list so your coins have been reserved.

As soon as I get the blessing from GM the project will go into high gear. I had expected to have heard back from them today but nothing came in my inbox. If I don't hear back tomorrow before noon I will give them another call.

I now have everybody's orders strait and we are ready. I still need to receive some of the money from a few people but we have the funds that are required to begin production.

I need to once again appologize to everyone here who has chosen to participate in this project for another delay that I should have seen coming. I was under the impression that if we did the artwork ourselves that everything would be fine and we would not have any trademark issues. We may not, but I want to make sure that we do this right. At this point all we have done is collected funding to make the project possible. No orders for tracking numbers or coins have been placed.

Acting upon some really good advice from the geocaching moderators I felt that I needed make sure that we check everything out before proceeding to production. It would ruin this project forever for me if there was any legal controversy surrounding it. I have not and would not intentionally do anything wrong or illegal. I want to continue to make this be a positive thing for our members.

One thing that I have found out during the course of this project is that the Fiero name is not as tarnished as I had thought. People outside of the Fiero community really do love the car. GM created something very special. I still think that this project has high merit and should continue even with the problems that it has caused for me.

All we need to proceed is the blessing from GM. This is the first time I have tried to do a project like this. I have made mistakes along the way but I believe that it will be worth it in the end. I ask for your forgiveness for my ignorance of the process and also for your patience. This is the last hurdle that we must cross.

I hope to have good news for you tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for your patience.

Well this can definately blow up in our faces. I have dealt with GMs legal department before. Obviously the logo is trademarked. They usually they will only allow things like this to happen if it's a registered club and the piece will have to bare the clubs name. This is a unique sistuation so who knows. Getting GMs approval Mabye would have been the 1st thing to do because that is a huge hurdle to overcome.

Edit: I called Equity Management again this morning. Mary is the lady in the Legal Department that approves designs. The receptionist said that she was in a meeting currently and that she is swamped. Later today she will confirm receipt of my email. She also said not to expect to hear anything back for about a week due to her workload.

When this project started we decided to make a coin way before we even had a design. We now have a design that is accepted by the group. Not one penny of the money from this project has been spent. Nothing has been ordered. We are waiting on approval from the GM firm in charge of licensing. We haven't even bought tracking numbers yet. What we have done is pool our money to make this project possible.

There really wasn't any other way that we could have done this. WIthout having 100 coins we could not acquire tracking numbers. (Groundspeak changed its rule only a few days ago to allow the purchase of 50 at a time but we had to work under the assumption of 100 because that was what they required when we started).

If we we did not have a commitment of 100 coins there would have been no point in moving forward and asking GM to approve a design. The worst case scenario right now is that I would return to everybody's money including paypal fees. Right now that is not even on the horizon.

Please do not post any negative comments about this project. If you have concerns please send them to me in a pm and I will address it.

We can make whatever changes they need us to in order to gain approval. This is a good project. It is worth doing. It is something that we will still be proud of years from now.

We are 1st and Goal on the 1 yard line. Things are looking good.

Now we wait.

Edit: No word yet.

Today is a good day. I have received word back.

quote
Dear Kenton:

Thank you for your request, and for your interest in General Motors’ Trademarks.

Equity Management Inc. (“EMI”) is the exclusive worldwide licensing representative of General Motors Corporation’s North American Operations (“GM”), including but not limited to the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GM Design Center, HUMMER, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, GMC, and Saturn divisions. In response to your request, attached for your review and completion is a Trademark Letter of Authorization Application. Please complete the Application as detailed as possible. We are happy to inform you that the standard one-time Authorization Administration Fee has been waived.

Please return the completed Application to my attention via U.S. Mail (and not e-mail, as we require the signed original for our file). If the Application is not completed, then we will be unable to process your request further and the Application will be returned to you. Upon receipt, GM will review your Application to determine if a Trademark Letter of Authorization is appropriate for your situation. If your Application is approved, the Trademark Letter of Authorization will be drafted and sent to you as soon as possible. If, however, your Application is not approved, you will be notified in writing.

Please note that the Letter of Authorization process takes some time, usually about one month. Accordingly, your patience is requested and appreciated, as we cannot accept or respond to follow-up telephone calls and/or E-mails.

Thank you for your cooperation. We look forward to receiving the completed Application.

Sincerely,

Mary

The project is moving forward again! I would like you to take note of her last paragraph. It will take a while to complete this project. We have the time it will take the manufacturer to go from concept, to dies, to production, engraving, and then shipping to me. I will do my part to the best of my ability but right now I don't expect to have the coins in your hands until at least May. Please be patient with me as well. We have come a long way.

I have a huge simulator test for work that starts in a half hour and will go into the night but I will devote my attention to getting the application completed and mailed out tomorrow.

If you have joined this project, please proceed to page 1 of this thread, find your screen name in the list, and ensure that the quantity of coins that you have requested is correct. I updated the list this morning. There is no need to reply if everything is in order.

I would like to thank you all again for backing this project. I would also like to send a special Thank You so those of you who have +ed me. My ratings bar has changed for the good and bad since this all started. I suspect that I have received the bad ones due to the fact that new coin requests are no longer being accepted. If you are one of the people that wanted in but got here too late I am very sorry. We had to cut it off somewhere. I had to choose a point where it was operationally correct for the project. If on the other hand you are unhappy with the progress being made, leave it a - but please revisit your rating of me when you receive your coin(s).

I will post an update as soon as we have our Letter of Authorization from GM. In the meantime, if you have any questions feel free to send me a pm.

In order to guarantee our price quote from coinsforanything.com I am going to put down our deposit of $135 on Monday. The quote that I received on March 5th is only valid for 30 days from when I received it so I want to make sure that we lock it in.

I had hoped to have heard back from EMI by now but we are still waiting on them. The second week in April is on the outside end of when they told me I should hear back. I am still checking the mail with great anticipation daily. I will post more when something there is news.

I don't want to seem negative but maybe you should start thinking about another design as a backup if you don't get permission to use the logo. Maybe do a Pennocks Fiero Forum Design.........
On a positive note I would like to thank you for getting me started Geo-caching. I had never really tried to do any caching before and now I'm hooked.........I think I have 17 finds and have moved on 4 TB's and one Geo-coin.

They said it would take time for to get it all settled on EMI's end. We need to be patient a while longer and let the process ride. We are one more day closer to getting this done.

I am now collecting the final funding for this project

I got home from my trip and finally got a chance to read through the letter. It eight pages of legal talk and it took a while. GM (EMI), has been kind to us. We can continue to make these coins for PFF members even after this order is complete.

I will ask that if you are purchasing a coin please don't buy them with the intention of reselling them. It could cause a perceived violation of the agreement with EMI for me personally. If I find out that this has happened the seller would be blackballed for future orders. Sorry that I have to be that way but I want to ensure the future availability of the coins. Too much has gone into this project to let it go.

We will officially kick off design and production with the manufacturer tomorrow. The email will be sent tonight.

Once I have received all funds from the remaining members we will obtain the needed amount of tracking numbers from Groundspeak and send them to the manufacturer for production. I would like to complete this phase by Friday.

We need to add www.fiero.nl to the coin to make it legal with our LOA. I am going to try to get the text embedded inside the silver circle so that it does not distort the image.

In order to meet the legal requirements of the LOA and Geocaching website it is necessary to add the text that now appears on the coin. This is what I have received back from the manufacturer.

I am going to have them fix the areas circled in blue so that it looks better. I am a perfectionist so I won't make any apologies for having them tweak the design a few times to get it the way I want it.

Hey RACE......is it me or do the "84" and "88" numbers look a little smaller than the "19"?
Maybe just confirm that as well.

There's nothing wrong with being a perfectionist I can't thank you enough for all of the time you have put into this project, Kenton!

+Due to the limits of their machining these are the choices that we have for the final coin as far as the letters go if we don't want the point of the Pontiac emblem touching any letters.

Choice 1

Choice 2

Choice 3
Or we could have the point touching the letter o in Geocaching.
Like where it is circled in blue. The g has been fixed.

Let me know what you think and we will finalize the design and move to production. Sorry that it has been a few days since I have posted. I have been busy at work and haven't been home.

The first, with the point reduced to contact with the circle. It just looks better.

I am leaning toward #1 as well.

There are only a few people who have not sent their funds for the coin. If you are one of them please do so at your earliest convenience. I will not delay the order any further waiting for the final payments.

The tracking numbers have been ordered. They should be sent to me in approx 10 days according to the geocaching website. That should give me plenty of time to forward them to the manufacturer for production.
