The title of this post has got to raise some eyebrows. Whenever I say this, I get remarks like you're really cheap how could you put substandard gasoline in your car? Truth is that more substandard gas is sold at the local "name brand" franchise gas stations than at the convenience chains. . It just so happens that my friend John S. drives a gasoline delivery truck and delivers gasoline to WaWa. He told me that BP Amoco is the main contract holder to supply gasoline to that chain. When spot buys are needed they also buy from Exxon Mobil, Gulf and Shell. Point is that they buy ONLY quality name brand gasoline but the main advantage is that these large chains don't fool with the pumps nor would they ever mix regular with the premium to boost the profits. The large chains are all tightly monitored and they do things honestly and ethically. Just a few years ago a local station in my town run by the towelheads was caught selling regular for 93 octane premium. A further check showed that their pumps were also set to deliver 10% less gasiline than they actually did. These thieves eventually paid the price but things like this don't happen when you buy QuikChek or WaWa gasoline. At those places you buy name brand gas (under private label) you get what you pay for and save money most of the time. The next time anyone says "I don't put cheap gas in my car" I'll just laugh and hope that he gets what he pays for at the local name brand stations.

We've got Superamerica (Speedway inc), Kwik Trip, Holiday Station & The usual selection of BP's and the such in the area. (I usually buy my gas at the local Kwik Trip... the one around the corner from my house sells mid-grade at the same price as regular (and our non-Fieros "require" higher octane fuel)...
I buy at Costco, using my Costco American Express card. It gives me a 3% discount on top of the member price. Costco is usually the cheapest gas around here too. There are only a handful of refineries in the US and they supply the gas to all gas stations. The only difference in brands is the additives and detergents they use.

This is a true statement but the additives and detergents in some brands of gasoline may be superior to others but most all gasoline is 10% alcohol so that it itself is a detergent and dry gas additive. I try to stick with BP Amoco, Exxon Mobil & Sunoco when I can but WaWa and QuikChek already buy from these companies. I avoid Citgo Communist made gasoline, the Russian Lukoil and Hess as it runs dirty. .

costco supplys gas?
beleave it or not Giant food stores supply gas to vey good deal they have for it to. when you buy grocereys you get points towards a fill up. I think 150 or 200 in grocereys gets you 10 gallons.

Sunoco or Wawa gas for me. Sunoco gas rocks, and on Wednesdays I can get it for 5 cents off per gallon at the local station, which is usually already 5 cents less than 95% of the local Wawa's...

this is regional in my area - there is ONE refinery - which provides ALL the gas for ALL the gas stations - there is no "cheap gas"
but, yes - I have gone out east, where there are (or were?) multiple refineries, and gas at one place was NOT the same as gas from another place.
If you were to pull up to any refinery, you would see Amoco trucks, Shell trucks, Exxon trucks and off brand trucks. Its all from the same place. Each company adds it's own additives, and those might make a difference, but the main reason they put in additives is because it provides a sort of DNA signature that is useful to forensics investigators. It identifies where the gas comes from. Which is helpful in cases of arson etc.

Ouch! There's a station just a couple miles from me that supplies the local circle track racers - they've got pumps with "Super 110 (Leaded)" or something like that. Stuff is probably running at least $8-10/gallon these days

Yes, I love buying gas from WaWa... they paid for 3 people in our office (along with everyone else that got gas that day) to have their engines rebuilt and their entire fuel systems replaced after the driver accidentally filled a gas tank up with diesel. I know that isn't WaWa's fault, but I've been sticking to other places since that happened.

Shell only. Never CITGO - don't want to support Uncle Hugo.
Exactly. I would push my car past a Citgo just on principle.
Also, since my 84 is my daily driver and I fill up every 2-3 days, I have noticed that I get noticeably better mileage from Shell than I do from Hess, Mobil or Amoco. All 87 octane too.

Using racial epitaphs is a really classy way to present an argument...
Way to add to the conversation...
I use Holiday because its right on the way out of town... and right on the way home from work. I am guessing that most people use what is just down the block or on the way home most of the time... driving 15-20 miles to save 5 cents a gallon will not save you any money. I always laughed at my old man because he used to drive the long way, to the local casino, to save 3 cents/gal.

Not so surprising that Marathon is not on the list. That's the only gas that I've ever put in my 3.4 Fiero that made me almost afraid to drive it because it pinged so badly.
What the hell is QuikChek and WaWa? Is that like Rotten Robbie and AM/PM? Cheaper gas?
I guess the point here is that the large convenience store gas center chains that we have here like WaWa, QuikChek and Sheets are not likely to fool with the quality of gasoline than your local gas station owned by those that can hardly speak English has. There have been many instances here in NJ where gas stations have been caught cheating by selling regular gas for premium. Due to the nature of the larger chains when you buy premium gas you get premium gas and its always a major brand. I wish that someone offered a gas test kit where we can check the octane ratings at the pump.

I don't live that far from the PA line so by referring to "around here" , I was referring to the Mid Atlantic Region. There are no Sheets convenience centers in NJ so that wasn't made to throw anyone off. As for the 4.9L; as you know that swap will be for my 85 GT convertible. Want to make it an economical solid highway cruiser with plenty of bottom end torque and good mileage. I've been looking on Craigs list and you can pick up complete 91-93 Cadillacs for about $1000. For what you can acheieve, the price vs performance ratio for these engines is very high. Reliabilty should also be excellent. and there are quite a few in your neck of the woods that are for sale as well. When I begin the swap you are welcome to come by and take a look at the progress. If you want to help out and get your hands dirty then I'll gladly throw you a few bucks. Quite a few young dudes have worked in the LaGrua garage!!

I think it is the underground storage tanks that really dictate whether the gas is good or not because they could potentially rust or become corrode, thus affecting the gasoline once it is pumped into the vehicle - same gas before it arrives though!
anyone have any info on the gas and gas stations in my area? some of us okies and texans would probably like to have this info.
i go for the cheaper gas in my area. about 3 miles from my house. its usually walmarts Murphy USA gas. and just the other day, i noticed a new sticker that said they only sell 100% REAL gasoline. that answered my ponder of why my car rocks out the mpg better when i got gas from there.

Hehe, I'd love to get my hands dirty Keeps me out of trouble lol. And my reasons for doing the 4.9 swap are the same as yours, performance and reliability, along with price and gas mileage. Give me a yell when you start up, I'll swing out and help you drop everything and slap it all back together
