I am a recently new owner of a 1986 2M4. Looking at pictures of different models and different years of Fieros, my model seems to be the only one to have this steering wheel. Was it specific to the '86 2M4? It's a thin wheel; I wish it were a little "beefier."

All the notchbacks between 1984-1986 got that wheel, except the '84 Indy Fiero and the '85 GT. For 1987, the wheel's design slightly evolved into something similar, but it received paddle horns on each side. In total, there are three different steering wheels put into Fieros. There's the one you have, then there is...

This style, which is in my '88 Formula and is the updated style I was speaking on. These were put in '87-'88 coupes and Formulas.

Then there is the 3-spoke 'GT' wheel, which was put in Fiero GTs and the Indy Fiero.

I have that base wheel on my car. I figured I'd get it since it was $20 compared to the $120 for a GT style wheel. The wheel is a larger diameter than the GT wheel and it feels weird in my hands. I also hate the material it is made of. My car sits outside, and the wheel literally melts in the sun. Anytime I go to drive the car, it is like grabbing onto tacky glue.

My first Fiero was an '84 coupe that I purchased in 2001 that had sat not running for nine years in the sun. The top of the wheel was so baked from the sun that I touched it the first time trying to get it positioned on the trailer and my hand was covered in sticky gunk. There was about a good half a foot section of the wheel that was pretty much destroyed just because it melted from the sun.

Fiero84Freak, I know what you mean about the steering wheel feeling sticky. When I first got it, I just assumed the previous owner hadn't cleaned it. So I gave it a good cleaning, and that helped, but it still gets gummy in the heat.

There are half a dozen different steering wheels used in FIeros throughout the years. The one in the first pic is the base model wheel, which was used in 84's and 85's as well. There were four different types used in 84 alone.

The reason you don't usually see that wheel in pics, is because most people got rid of them and upgraded
