the only one i can think of that can be setup for high-rpm use is the 3.4TDC. Put solid lifters in, you should be able to twist it to 8k easily. If you can change transmissions, Quad 4 can do 8 grand, so can ecotec. depending on your budget, N* can do it too but takes quite a bit more money.

My personal choice is ecotec due to the weight savings of using that engine family.

You might want to first consider exactly why you're wanting a high rev motor. Most of the time the only thing a good high rev motor is good for is spirited road driving, circuit racing, or auto-x, as you don't stay in any constant speed for a given time. Normal road driving you probably have better options to you that don't require you to use so much engine (and that don't require a lot of mods). Although the choices mentioned above are pretty affordable considering what some guys like the Honda crowd have to pay to get high rev setups.

Remember that not all engines have to rev ridiculously high to make useful power.

No doubt it sounds good, I love VW engines and the WOW factor is way up there. But, from the thread you linked,

After this is done, I am starting the turbo VR6 project to go into this car. I want to make sure that it wil work properly in the stock form before I add 300hp.

There is another thread I have seen around here were they are using the 12 cylinder version of the VR6 in a swap. That is totally wicked.

Really though if the poster is looking for a high rev engine, and wants to keep the Fiero chassis, he could always get a import donor and have some fun doing fabbing and wiring with a complete engine and trans swap like BMWGuru. Or go Ecotec or 3.4TDC like mentioned earlier and bolt to the 4.10 manual.

Forget the VR6. The one and only VR6 Fiero swap was done by a full time automotive expert technician who works with German engines all day every day.. Even so it probably took him over 1000 hours to complete.
The matching VW trans was used and there were all kinds of special things needed. The shifter, mounts, axles, etc all had to be custom made. While BMWguru can fill you in, last he said that he would not do another one for less than $10,000.
If for some reason a high rev engine is your only option, the 3.4L DOHC will bolt right to the Fiero trans and right to the cradle. Quite a few have been completed and there are several build threads on this forum.
