I was just looking at my car's original dealer invoice, and just now noticed it includes key numbers for the ignition and trunk, both in the form 11A1 (number number letter number). Can a dealership or locksmith still use these codes to make a reproduction key?
Unfortuantly, I don't have an answer for you. That is an excellent question however. A good piece of information to file for use at a later date, if required.

A Cadillac dealer made keys for one of my Caddy's(a 90 model) with the key codes, so I would think that they still can also.
The only difference in the keys between the Caddy and the Fiero, is the resistor pellet in the ignition key. I'm fairly sure that he cuts are the same as a standard key.

YES a locksmith can make a set based on that code, have done that in the past. I have a question though, can you still get the key code info from a dealer with a vin and proper identification?? I dont have working door keys or a trunk key. Would be a lot easier to get one made than to swap all the locks.

FINALLY got an answer to this question, since I finally remembered to take the codes to the dealer
Went to the Pontiac/GMC/Buick dealer, and talked to one of the older guys there. He said he remembered cutting keys from codes in the old days, and they had a big, thick book you could look up the codes in, and they would tell you what cuts to make. He then called his buddy at a local locksmith, and they said they could do it.
So I drove over there, gave the guy the codes, and had new keys made in under 5 minutes. Cost a fairly reasonable $16.95
At our dealership we can cut keys to codes, however we don't support vehicles after 10 years so if you want to have one made you better have your own key code. After ten years it's hit and miss whether they will find a key code from the vin,and the batting average is terrible.

At my local Chevy dealership i had Keys cut to vin on 2 cars. They still had the codes in there database. Its surprising how much better a fresh cut key works compared to a 20+ YO key.

If anyone has their key codes and can't find anybody in your area to cut them, I can do it for you. I'll cut one key for $8.00 or $15.00 for the pair & that includes postage. What DefEddie said above is correct. Hard to get codes on cars over 10 years old. If you still have your manual, check it. Many times the original owner will have written the code inside it. Let me know if I can help.

A little off topic... I had keys cut from original from quite a few places, though they looked the same they did not fit. I was thinking of buying blanks from ebay then decided to visit the local GM dealership. A pair of keys cut for $4.50 and they fit. Now i have spares.

Oh I forgot to mention also,I'm a tech at a Ford,Lincoln,Mercury dealer so my info doesn't necessarily apply to chevrolet. But it's common for most manufacturer's to stop supporting after 10 years.
