In his words..."I purchased an abondoned 1993.5 Toyota Supra TT W/ Targa. The DMV said i would be able to get a title going through the town clerk and some other people... After the process was over and i went to the DMV again, they said that the only way i can get the title is through town Auction." Is there anyway to get this title? the previous owner is nowhere to be found and it would be a shame for my brother to have to part this car out. It only has the original 18,000 miles on it and it runs like brand new. Any ideas guys?
P.S the town already said they didnt want it and said my brother can have it....the dmv says otherwise and wont allow a title any ways around this?

Google "Automotive Title services" and see if those places can help.
I don't know if they do newer then 1980s cars though.

He needs to get a court orderd vehical title. This is going to be hard because he has the prove the car isant stolen. A bill of sale will also get you good points. But its not easy and sometimes can be more money than its worth.

If you can find out the name of the owner as stated on the title, (the last recored owner) and or the lein holder, you will be miles ahead. Than find a shop or towing company that will work with you. Ask them what it takes to do a "ABANDONED MOTOR VEHICAL" legal paperwork. You can find the places that can do it by looking in your newspaper "classifieds' under abandoned motor vehicals. It may state the statutes that apply right in the add. It might be to much work.

International Title Service: http://www.its-titles.com/Pricey but if the car is not stolen or junked out they will get you a title. I've dealt with them twice now. Send them all the paperwork as described on the site also send your Credit Card number and about 3 weeks later you have plates and registration to the vehicle in your name! With this you can start driving immediately and can also take the registration that is now in your name to your DMV and request a new title. Couldn't be simpler. ~Tyler fyi: the last car i got plates, registration and title for through them cost me $365

I'm sorry. I guess I'm just really confused.
How can ANYONE come across a MKIV TT with that mileage on it for free - and having it run? Which now knowing that it runs, were the keys just left in it too or he somehow got the keys? (because you can't have a dealer cut a key unless you prove proof of ownership). Something doesn't quite seem right. No one, I mean not even people who don't know what they are, "abandon" a MKIV. If somebody really did do that, they are currently near the top of the list as dumbest car owner in the northern hemisphere.

its an import... its stolen... Don't be shocked when 2 out of 3 imports you see are stolen.. This car might have been stolen... and then someone else came along and stole it again... [This message has been edited by Turbogoose (edited 02-15-2010).]

I've only ever seen one MK.IV Supra in my life (and the guy put a fart can on it ) - nobody in their right mind would abandon one. It's most likely stolen. The simplest answer is usually the correct one.

It's been decades since I dealt with the DMV in NY but it probably hasn't changed much. Your best bet is to get a title service that will get you and out of state title then you can title it in NY.

EXACTLY! It's a TT with 18k. There are Supra sackriders out there that will give away their nuts for those cars and enthusiasts that will easily dump over 30k for one - if it is as described with that mileage - in original condition. | quote | Originally posted by skuzzbomer:

LOL! There's a guy here in central AR that owns three!! (He tries to sell two of them all the time on craigslist, but asks way too much for them). And I get to see two, a white one and a red one, daily driven at least once a week and usually more. [This message has been edited by Fiero84Freak (edited 02-15-2010).]

You can do this if you want to go to prison, that is a big no-no.

you would have a better chance of picking up girls in a fiero then you would in a Supra...
Plus who wants to drive a car that hulk Hogan son crashed...
Edit... the car is also as heavy as a Cadillac....

In the words of my brother... "I love your opinions and you make a good point about the weight but, my 1993.5 Twin Turbo 6spd MKIV only weighs 3100lbs. The previous generation (MKIII) is around the weight you mentioned. Maybe you're confused? The 2JZ-GTE engine compared to a 302cu is no comparison. You're talking about an engine with stock HP and torque that is almost 100 less than that of the 2JZ. Not saying the nice little combo you mentioned is crappy, and the weight reduction into a miata sounds nice, but a 2JZ motor with minor bolt-ons (exhaust, cold-air intake, DP, etc) is capable of 400HP at .8 BAR easy. Also, i think you have your facts wrong because the 302cu (out of the SVT/SVO correct me if i'm wrong) will never produce 100 more HP than a 2JZ without a boost application. I feel like your only angle is weight and if that's the case you'll find yourself behind any MKIV you come across." P.S he means no harm with this... just friendly argument about his car =)

Not really.... it has to do with intent. If you take a car that you know to be stolen and you swap VINs that is a felony. If you own two cars and you are in the process of restoring one and using the other for parts you have a choice as to which VIN plate you use for the final project. I've had the DMV advise me as much. So it's all in the context.

I have no idea if this is true in NY. And even if it is you need another 1993.5 Toyota Supra TT W/ Targa that you have clear title to and from what I understand they are fairly rare. I meant to say earlier that it has to be two identical cars.

I suggest try the supra forum.... but if its stolen he is running the risk of someone spotting it.... . I suggest he seek free advice from a Lawyer... or a Mechanic or someone who works in the Auto field..
I also suggest everyone to let this thread die..
I am done here. |

If he ran it through the DMV and it came back clean that its not stolen. Things like this do happen. Every day? no but they do happen. Hell there is a member on here who got an older Roles Royce for $500. That is a once in a life time thing.

In NC you would need a title bond for the value established by 3 licensed dealers. If someone comes forth with the title, one of you gets the car and one of you gets the money. I tried to get this done with a '63 Mini but the dealers wouldn't help me at all. I sold the car with no titla and a blank VIN plate. Who knows what the new owner did.....

Just file a mechanics lein on the car and as long as it is not stolen thereis no problem,I had an almost new Infinity J30 that was not paid for by the previous owner owing almost $18,000 $25per day and he left it at my house where it sat for 2 years.I did file a lein on the car for storage
It took about 3months but I got a new title sa it was cheaper for the finance company to sign the title over than pay for storage

Well in order to do that we will need a mechanic willing to put a lein on it right? Its not just something they do commonly correct? or is it just like you said we can "file for it"?

Probably easier to spend your resources finding the prior owner and getting them to sign it over.

Um ya that car was not "abandoned", and my ex-wife's father in-law had no right to sell it (crotchety old bastid)!! I will be contacting you via PM so we can get this straightened out, that car is worth 20,000+ easy and my ex PITA andfather in law both know it Just because I am 8 months behind with alimony does not give them a right to pursue "cowboy justice"..
