I ran across a Vega Cosworth yesterday. Engine was all there But the car was rusted out to the point of using a shovel to get it on a rollback.
So I passed on it. This morning I got to thinking. Has anyone used a Vega Cosworth engine in there fiero? They are hard to find. And posting this on a Hbody forum
would get the Cosworth fans blood pumping. (Me) I was never a big fan of them. Parts are hard to find. I didn't search.

The a bit more upto date FBA and FBC 2.9V6 engines or the 2.0 YB series would be a better choice both capable of turboing to 400bph +. The FBA and FBC are also very cheap and plentiful over here, where as the 2.0 YB is a bit more expensive as it is a popular choice for kit cars.

Yes, there is a guy who made a Cosworth Vega powered Fiero several years ago. I'm pretty sure he's a member of this Forum.

I made an adapter plate for him.

I'll try to find some details later when I'm at the shop.

Remember that the Cosworth Vega was a 2.0L engine. The head was a nice piece of work but the block was more or less a Vega. Chevrolet wanted to race this engine and consequently added race cams, etc. for it to their performance catalogue.
The HP target was in excess of 250 HP. Unfortunately the block itself would come unzipped, so the whole race program went to the dumpster.
An engine worth saving. But I might not want to put it in a Fiero. Maybe a Vega......

Gee Archie, I wonder who that could be! There have been two that I know of. Gerald Storvik of Fresno, CA put one in his '84 for autocrossing. He had completely redesigned the rear suspension and frame the last time I saw it. Being a Cosworth Vega guy, I had seen his web site when he was first putting the engine in his car. While out in CA I made plans to stop by his shop to check his progress. At the time I knew very little about Fiero's, I still don't know a whole lot! Gerald's engine fit with just a little shoe-horning and modification to the right rear shock tower. What I did know about Fiero's was that the '88 had a redesigned and better suspension. So when I returned home I started looking for an '88 GT. Found a very clean one in North Carolina. I visited Archie, he modified a V8 adapter plate for me, his clutch and starter went right in and I was off. Little did I know the '88 shock towers were closer together than the earlier models. My shoe-horning turned out to be a bit more work. There was no room for the distributor drive and not enough room for the intake system. I finally got it in and learned a couple more things after that. I should have rigidly mounted it and found some way to replace the dog bone that I did not have room for.

I probably drove the car a total of 50 miles, always had trouble with the hydraulic clutch. I took the engine out of it three years ago to put back in a Vega. Started a 3800 conversion which I haven't yet finished and probably won't.

So yes, it has been done but probably won't be done again. The 2.0L street versions can easily make 180 HP, stroked 2.4L versions about 240 HP. The engines actually did very well in open wheel midget racing, won their last championship in '93 or '94, ARCA midget series. Chevy designed a heavy duty block for it although they only made 50 blocks. In race trim the 2.0L made 300 HP.

I did go back to the Cosworth Vega . Looked it over real good. Block looked cracked from the inside out. Below the freeze plugs.
I told a bud of mine. I guess he going out with a big shovel and gets what he can. The lady that owns it was willing to pay to
have it removed.
