It seems to me that I get pulled over quite frequently in my Fiero and it's always BS excuses! Wednesday night I was stopped in Ft. Myers, FL. (30 miles from home) by a local cop. I was only doing 40mph in a 45mph zone. He came up to the car and told me to shut it off and give him the keys. I thought WTF? I have never had a cop take my keys! I did as he asked then he wanted my license, insurance and registration. Gave him all that and he told me to sit tight. He went back to his car and 15 min's later came back and handed me my stuff. He then asked if I still lived in Naples. I said yes. He asked what I was doing in Ft. Myers. By now I was upset and asked if it was against the law to be in Ft. Myers if I lived in naples. I then asked him why he stopped me. He told me that my license plate was not illuminated. I thought...no way...I just put 2 new bulbs in those lights less than a year ago. I asked him if he minded if I got out and looked. He said no. When I walked to the back of the car sure enough both license plate lights were on! I said... what do you mean my plate lights are out? He then said that they are dim. By now i'm fuming mad. I told him that it was a 21 year old car and it's not my fault if newer cars have brighter lights! I then told him to call for his on duty sargent. When the sargent got there I told him that this officer had no reason to pull me over other than to check me out and I was sick and tired of being pulled over constantly and profiled by the police just because of the car I drive. He told me that they do not profile. HA! Then why do I keep getting stopped for no reason? He said the officer had a reason. I asked what the reason was...because my plate lights are out? He said yes. I pointed to them and said...They are on arent they? He then said that they are dim! I went through the same speel with him as I did the officer who pulled me over in the first place. No ticket was written but they both told me to buy better lights! I told them that the lights are stock equipment and I would not change them. 45 min's with these 2 and finally I gave up and left.
The time before that I was pulled over in broad daylight and the officer told me it was because the tinting on my front windshield came down too far. I told him there was no tinting on the front windshield that the tint was inside the glass from the factory!
Anyone else have these problems?

I really don't know the solution to brain-dead-authoratarion morons with guns.
What works for me, is the statement "all rights reserved", "I have nothing to say" and less than gently lettinmg them know there will be repurcussions if they cross me----all of the legal sort, nothing illeagal--but this is small-town nowhere. most of them are decent guys, and the decent ones are slowly but surely driving the old-school nazi types into retirement.
10 years ago if a cop asked me for a drivers licence while I was walking down the street, and I asked why would I need a drivers licence to walk--I would have a nightstick up the head. Today, the same uniform will say "your right"

Here is a pic of the back of the car clearly showing both lights are on.
They are kind of dim...
I generally get pulled over 1 to 2 times a year for no reason, I just get used to it. And I generally don't want to argue with them... Texas police have a habit of shooting into vehicles for the slightest imaginable reason.
I have driven piece of crap vehicles with all kinds of violations on them for years and have never been stopped in another vehicle for piss poor reasons. I try my damndest to keep this Fiero in perfect working order. Why? So I can get pulled over all the time for stupid sh!t? Hell no! I do it so I "don't" get pulled over.

I just remebered another 1 the cops tried with me. Back before I did my mod to my sail panel windows, the windows were cracked like most GT windows. The drivers side one had a piece missing on the middle of it about the size of a baseball. A cop followed me for 10 miles then kicked on the lights and pulled me over. He told me that he "thought" the car might be stolen. I told him that the windows don't even go to the inside of the vehicle! I asked if he ran the plates while he was following me? He said yes. I asked if the plates came back to a Fiero. He said yes. I asked if they came back as stolen? He said no. I then asked him why he was wasting my time!

LOL it's an optical illusion from the camera. In person you can see my plate clear even in the darkest conditions.

In all fairness, the car could have been stolen and hasn't been discovered by the owner yet, so in that case it wouldn't have been reported yet.
Seriously...I had an 84 Fiero back in 1984.It was my 16th birthday present.I had the second one in our town. In the first 6 months I bet I got pulled over a dozen times just to get harassed because I guess they didn't think a kid should be in this "new red sports car".
I'm sure I'll get pulled over a few times once I get the 86 GT on the road(motor is shot)...but I'll probably deserve it.lol.

I don't agree. You can plainly see that those windows are on the back part of the car behind the rear window. He followed me for 10 miles and I know damn well he could tell that the window did not enter inside the vehicle.
If I get pulled over because I did something wrong, I have no problem or gripe about that. Not everyone is perfect and will commit a traffic violation unkowingly. But when they give me BS excuses is when it ticks me off.

For about the first 3 weeks I had the car I got pulled over all the time for the same excuse (No front license plate). I always gave the same excuse "I'm trying to find a stock plate holder" Each time they pulled me over it was license and registration and then what i was doing out and where I was going. Granted I was 17 year old teenager and owned a red 2 seater car which I think was a big part of it.. After about a month though I was on first name basis with most of the regulars around town and never have any issues with them now.

I guess the lesson here is to not try and drive over the officer when they're interrogating you.
No weapon was found. I've NEVER understood why anyone would do anything other than what the cop tells you when the cop already has his gun drawn and pointing at you. At that point, argue your rights later - just try to keep from being shot and survive the encounter.
I get pulled over every few months for no front license plate on my car(a law here in Tx). Most of the time it is by State Troopers fishing for something bigger. I give them the same story I always do and they give me a verbal warning about getting it mounted. I did get pulled over buy a local cop a while back for the same reason. At the time I had a microwave in pass seat, I had a relly scruffy beard and was wearing a hoody. From the way the cop was acting, I do believe he thought I had stole the microwave and was a felon. He asked me several times if anything was going to come up when he ran my licience. I told him no, there was nothing to worry about that my record was clean. Once he came back to the car, he handed my papers back and walked off without even saying have a nice day.

Last time I had a vehicle search, it was in High School. The drug dog locked down on my truck. When the Vice principal conducted the search, he found a condom packet in the ash tray. He said "at least you are being responsible".......I said "Yes, I have too, I've been going out with your daughter!!!" Turned out the dog locked on to a shot gun shell pellet.

Silentassissin and MstangsBware...both of you got pulled over for not having a front license plate in a state where you are supposed to have one. "I" know why you don't have one (airflow and all) but those officers had a legitimate reason to pull you both over. My point to this post was to hear about cases of being profiled.
Jscott... I read that story you posted the link to and I also read all 10 pages of comments. I can't tell you if the officer was justified in the shooting or not or if the story the officer is telling is true.

Last interaction I had with the local Sheriff in my Fiero, he followed me 3 miles, including setting behind me through a whole light cycle. I got on the freeway, and apparently I was more worried about safely merging into traffic then displaying appropriate fear of him. I got on it a little, enough to get to 65 by the end of the ramp. The freeway ends in 1 mile, going to 55. As I'm adjusting my speed to 55, I have the pushbar of a cruiser filling my rearview. He's nearly punting me off the road, and I have to take evasive maneuvers. Sure enough, he turns on the lights and pulls me over.
"So, where are you going in such a hurry?" Dude, I never exceeded the limit until you were riding my ass, and it's none of your business where I'm going. I get a ticket for 70 in a 65 and no insurance card in my car. I don't mind paying the speeding tax, as much as I get away with it, the law of averages states that I'm going to get busted sometime. I jusrt didn't care for the daredevil move of riding my bumper at 55 mph. I complained to the Sargeant or whomever, and apparently the deputy was very shortsighted and needed to be that close to read my plate in broad daylight. Pendejos. My motto about cops are, the smaller the town, the bigger the clown.

Sorry this isnt fiero related.. but... Im getting pretty fed up with cops lately. I was running on a bike path last night around midnight and out of nowhere some kids jump out of some bushes and run behind me. I run ahead of them then some more came out of nowhere. next thing I know, im surrounded by a bunch of cops and theres kids following me? The cop has his gun out and tells me to put my hands above my head... etc ..etc and walks myself and about 15 kids back the two miles i just ran to a huge group of squad cars. I have no idea whats going on. Then I start hearing about drinking and kids jumping into the mississippi and swimming. Well at that time im like..hmm oh shitt.. I have shorts and no shirt on,,, so do most of these kids. Im standing, freezing cuz im not running and i keep asking what is going on, noone would give me an answere. One cop told me to shut up. the other told me i already knew what was going on. I was so angry. long story short, they took me and everone to the station, then asked if anyone has not been drinking. Im like, "hey, do me first get me out of here" then the cops like, not one, not two, not anytime today? nothing? i say " Did I not say no?" They breathilized me and of course i blew nothing. One cop apologized and then they didnt even give me a ride back to where i was. I got lost, tried waving a cop down that was passing by, he looked and just kept driving.... i had to ask a bum where i was. around 5am i find my car and get out of there, such a BS night. I didnt even do anything. Nothing. Wrong place Wrong time. Dumb cops.

I used to get pulled over for BS reasons just so the cops could check me or my car out. That was when I was young; these days they don't even see me when I drive by...
Go figure.

The sad part is that stories like this happen all too often. Interesting that the Chronicle just revised the headline on that article sending the version with 10+ pages of comments off to the archives. It sounds like they are trying to make it sound more justified...now it reads:
June 3, 2007, 12:24AM Deputy shoots, kills man inside moving car Suspect is said to have aimed his vehicle at the officer

Yes I completely understood why they did. Don't get me wrong on that. Its just one of those things even if I would have had a front license plate I'm sure they would have got me for something else. Heck I could tell when I drove by one just how they looked at me I could tell the passenger "watch this hes gonna pull me over and question me about the license plate." I had it in the front windshield but thats never good enough lol. And besides no harm no foul I'm on good terms with most of the local PD now.

1) Window tinting (No consequence) 2) Driving out late (No consequence) 3) Speeding (Yea, I was guilty)
One time when I was stopped at a red light late at night a cop stopped right in my blind spot, thinking I would tear off. I know how to drive and I use my mirrors thank you. I saw him behind me way before I stopped.
On top of all these incidents Ive been around cops a few other times and never once has an officer mentioned me not having plates. I wonder if living in an expensive area (where ferrari's and lamborghinis with no front plates are a common sight) has anything to do with it

Normally, no but a couple of weeks ago due to going a bit fast during pasing a truck ( and the egr tube flaking out at that exact moment, proly due to the acceleration knocking it free ) i earned a ticket. Cop could even hear the high idle as i shut it down. Sure it was 90% the cars fault, but im still responsible for the car... ( first ticket in at least 20 years )
For about 3 days after that i had cops following me around.. Was wierd. didnt get stopped but had them on my tail.
Back in Iowa I used to get stopped here and there for 'tinted windows' until they saw that they were the sail panels, once for running with just the parking and fog lights on at dusk, and three times because they thought I was speeding (I was once but didn't get a ticket). Here in California I just got stopped the other day and the Officer asked me to pop the hood so he could see the engine. He looked a little surprized when I said it was in the back but then after looking at it said okay and gave me my documents back and said I could go. When I asked him why he stopped me he said he was checking for after market modifications ( My little 4 cylinder is totally stock). They can do that?????

They can pretty much stop you for whatever reason they might have in mind.
When I was growing up, the father of one of my classmates was one of the town's cops. He said that they could always find a reason to pull over anyone they wanted. Usually no citation involved, just a warning. He pulled me over one day (after I got out of High School) to ask me if I could give his daughter a ride to school (college) for a few days. (There were benefits to knowing the local cops--they gave me a lot of slack about pushing the speed limit.)
I've never been stopped in an Fiero--the cops in Reno tend to give grownups (probably anyone over 30) lots of space--you have to be making a real fool of yourself to get popped. Since the paint job, I've been followed a couple of times. And had a "I used to have one of those." from a cop who followed me into Wendy's.

This is why it gets so tricky... why do certain types of cars and drivers get pulled over more than others??
When I had the red 88 GT, I got pulled over a time or three for BS stuff. Now, I have a plain silver coupe and it never gets a second glance. Even though it is quicker and louder than the GT was, it just does not stand out (thankfully).

when owned 3 fieros i use to get stopped quite frequently...it was quite funny to see he puzzled looked on thier faces trying to figgure out which year car i was in that day...at one point i was so annoyed i swapped body panels just to mess with them more...lol..that was fun..it got even worse when i had my 86se for sale...i went through a check stop one night with a buddy of mine and the cop ended up asking me a lot of questions when he saw my car for sale...it was kind of funny...but overall if i got stopped i probably wasnt being a model citizen...tim

Better to remain calm and collected when stopped. Politeness sometimes works wonders but if you sound confrontational it can mean a ticket. There are 100's of reasons to issue you a summons and if the police encounter hostility they can and will find a reason to site you. In New Jersey the police can issue you a summons if you are even carrying your old insurance ID card along with your new one ( even if it's in the glove compartments) , if you have an air freshener hanging from your mirror (obstructing rear vision) , loud exhaust (purely discretionary) any number of improper equipment violations, an unsafe lane change or turn, dangerous action like slamming on your brakes etc. Apparently small sports cars, especially those painted red seem to enjoy the most attention. I've been stopped a number of times going 15 mph over the limit and have not be sited. Why?? I present myself in a polite professional and courtesous manner and don't fuel an argument. Thje last time I got stooped the cop asked me, do you know why I stopped you. I said yes it was because I was speeding. Then he said did you know how fast you were going, I replied about 68, he said that you were going 70. A minute later he said just watch your speed and let me go. and closed with "You've been the first honest person that I've stopped all day!!!!!" Some Police do their job with dilligence, others are more lenient. Now in your case, if you would have simply said Poor illumination of the license plate? " I completely understand- I'll be sure to check it out" Now you've agreed with the officer so you've taken away the whole argument. Chances that you would have been on your way in two minutes. No one likes being stopped but it happens to all of us.

Personally I believe in "putting your money where your mouth is". In Jimmy's case I feel the officer should have been required to appear in court and prove that the OEM plate lights were illegal, or pay an equivalent fine out of his own paycheck if (or rather when) he was proven wrong. Same case with any other stop; if the defendant wins, the officer personally pays the same fine and incurrs any points on the drivers licence, does any jail time, etc. that he tried to stick Johnny Taxpayer with in the first place.

D B Has it there I have a misshap I pay I screw up I pay. God forbid I screw up in my semi there will be dead people. We all!!!!!!!!!!! should live by the same rules cops judges ect. I had the bumper off my 66 GTO for re crome when cop pulled me over to ticket me for no bumper plate was in window and I was legal. I told him my new toyota pick up came stock with no bumper and he should leave me alone. I got off after calling state patrole on cell asking them to come by and keep me from getting stupid with this cop.
Another time I was in my lifted 4x4 chevy it had 1 way glass no tint 24 KC daylighters and two VW buggie lights on front axel to meet with head light hight laws i sat for 4 hours till i call state trooper for help just to be let go.
last week in my formula i was 1 mile from home in daylight 3 pm where i spent 4 hr with city cop tearing my car apart looking for a law that i could have violated. i had no head lights so he tried to ticket me. it took a state trooper to keep me from doing somthing stupid.
last month i parked my semi tractor in my drive way to clean out. it fits in the drive way just fine no hang over on side walk. wile there are 2 on my street in a culdasac parked on side walk facing wrong way and i get the ticket. cost me $3,000.00 yep 3k for that. now i have HOA up my ass my grass is over 2" by 1/4 inch my gate to back yard blew open, a few rocks from second rock drive way were on side walk, my mail box was left open, and i start my new 2006 pontiac grand prix in garage at 3am open garage door pull out close door get back in car and go to work causing my neighbors distress waking them up. I get from $300 to $800 in fines from the HOA a month.
You can only imagine the hate i feel for the leagal system.
good luck just being looked at in you car. swap with me i will be happy too

You should move, HOA that strict should be left to the ass holes that run them. If your one I'm sorry but when you get a fine for brown grass and are not allowed to water its a racket. I wont ever live where there is a HOA again, if they try to start that crap I will fight tooth and nail.

First off are you fitting a profile of someone that is problem in the community.
Out late in a modified car
Loud music
Loud exhaust
Out of towner in wrong part of town where drugs and hookers work. You may not know it but your in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Under 25 years old
I could go on. Cops mostly pull you over to find out who you are3 and what is up to prevent someone getting hurt or causing a problem in there area. If are not doing anything wrong you have nothing to fear. Also getting smart with them is just what will get you in trouble.
When i was younger I had a Chevelle with a Tunnel Ram, Tinted glass, Header mufflers, Ladder bars, No front plate, Aircraft landing lights in the high beams. I used to get stopped and followed but that is just the price of driving a car like I was going street racing. I never did reace on the street but how were they to know as many others were.
Once I talked to a few of them and they knew who I was we were cool and I never got a ticket even with the may violations I did have.
I know some cops can be a pain and are idiots but also be fair and look at what they have to deal with. Just a few hours of Cops or Court TV will show what kind of trash is out there and complete idiots we have in society.
I have a few friends that either have been or are still cops that are hot rodders and bikers, one is even a FBI agent and they are all cool. I hear and see what they deal with and unless provoked they are not looking to start anything just prevent it.
When they see a car with plates from another city late at night how are they to know they are just coming home from Grannys house and not getting ready to steal the radio out of your Fiero? Most people do not steal local and that is one reason they will check you if your from Naples and driving in FT Myers.
Like I said most cops are not perfect! But most are just trying to do there job and the easier you are on them if your not soing anything the easier things will go for you.
Hell just being honest has gotten me out of a few tickets too. One where I was doing 70+ in a 45 zone. He asked me if I knew why I was pulled over and I told him yes. [Why Lie]. I told him it was late and I had to be at work early in the AM. Told him where lived and that I was going home. He just told me to slow down. A state trooper also got me late in the Chevelle and after a few questions and a few honest answers I was on my way.
Of you get pulled over often ypu might just want to check out what your doing as there is something setting off the cops to get thier attention and it is not just a Fiero.
I haven't been pulled over in a while and usually if I am, it's because I am guilty. I just be polite accept my ticket etc...and move on. In the town I live in now though they do all their ticketing around 2-4 am when your sleeping and just have to wake up to a ticket. The tickets are usually for
1. Parking on the wrong side during alt parking. (I really try not to do that, but its so congested here, and sometimes you just forget what day it is) 2. Front license plate being in the front window and not mounted on the front. Ok I may be guilty. but fought this, won, and haven't gotten it again thankfully. 3. No inspection sticker. - Shocked they never hit me with this one before. $130 ticket, so I went to inspection, failed and now have 45 days to fix some expensive stuff (like the roof)
Just the other day I was coming home and the street goes under a highway for a block or so, its daylight but dark for that short moment. Well I see a car in the shoulder under the highway, then realize it's a police vehicle, then realize two of them are standing in the middle of the road. All this happens quick btw. I slow down because I don't know what they are doing, and as go by I hear the following comments.
Officer 1. Hey, check it out, it's a fiero. Officer 2. Yeah it is, Nice I haven't seen one of those in a long time.
both of these comments were in a positive way.
Now if only they were in the town I live in.

"what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul"

I cant say taht I have ever been profiled. here in wisconsin they seem to really not care much. Then again, I live in madison, so Im sure that they have better things to do then to follow around a car that isnt doing anything wrong when theres a ton of other things going on around town that requires their attention.
First off are you fitting a profile of someone that is problem in the community.
[QUOTE]
I am replying to your entire post but didn't want to quote the whole thing so I will just quote the first line.
I am a 39 year old male and clean cut. My license plate is a non territory plate meaning it does not display the county. The car itself is in great shape. All lights work, no body panels missing, and only a couple discreet body mods. Mods include Kris Munsons flushmount headlights, Dietmar side scoops and sail panel window mod (clear cut out along dot matrix pattern and then covered in convertible top material). People that do not know any better would never know that stuff didn't belong. The exhaust is somewhat loud but not overpowering. The car is Red which I believe has a lot to do with why I get pulled over. To me being pulled over cause my car is Red is Profiling plain and simple. I have not had a speeding ticket in over 5 years nor have I been stopped for speeding in over 5 years.
It should not matter where I am from, what kind or color of car I drive, how old I am, what area of town I am in, what time it is, why I am out or where I am going. If I have not committed some type of offense then leave me the hell alone! If I have a tail light out, headlight out, fail to use my turn signal, cross the yellow line or anything else, then by all means pull me over and write me ticket, give me a warning, give me a fix it ticket or whatever.
My point is that police should not be able to make up excuses just because they think you might possibly in one way or another be trouble. I have the right as a free citizen to go anywhere at any time withought being harrassed by police for no legitimate reason.
Edit to add... My father is a retired police officer, I have a cousin who is a current police officer with 5 years to go to retirement, I was a MP in the Army and a private investigator in civilian life. i have been in their shoes and my cousin cannot believe the amount of times I have been pulled over for dumb ass sh!t.
