Job is completed. Here is a quick startup video from my cell phone, so please excuse the crudeness. The only thing left is to put the decklid on and test drive, but both of us are beyond exhausted and the 12 pack at home is calling my name.
The unequal length headers make is rumble like a V8. Note the VW coolant bottle where the battery was. That is our intercooler reservoir that self purges the air and holds a decent amount of G12 coolant.

So now that phase 1 of this project is complete, we will be starting phase 2 after the 18th of this month. I don't plan to pull that off in a week's time, though. For phase 2, Charles wants new gauges, a dyno run, and I have a few suggestions that I plan to run by him.
I plan to keep updating this thread as we build the car....including more pics and videos in better lighting as well as our initial video of Ryan and I removing the drivetrain in 30 minutes.
Dave
ps...Ryan and I both agreed that this swap would have gone much easier if it had been a stock 2.8 for us to start out with, but thanks to careful planning and both of us being on the same page, we did indeed finish in the five day window. Our initial plan was to have it running by Wednesday and take it easy on Thursday and Friday. The wiring mods took me an additional day and for him, modifying the cradle and front engine mount so the engine wouldn't sit crooked took him an extra day.

That is most awesome. I hope the rest of it goes well, but I'm sure it will with you guys at the wheel.
Now if only my car could have been completed that fast. (Lots more custom one-off work, no chance. )

Charlie, I bet you're chomping at the bit!

I'll have to get a finger pic posted for you guys. We took the weekend to sleep and came back to a nuthouse at the shop today. I should close my shop up for a week every few months. I have more German car work than we can handle waiting for us.
If the weather clears up, I plan to start putting some "break in" miles on Charlie's car. I have the rev limiter set kind of low for now to prevent killing the new cam. I'll bump it back up after a few hundred miles.
I will post up the details as to what phase II of this build will be. Mostly suspension and brake mods. I plan to try and get Alltrbo's alternator bracket fabricated before then.

I've been trying to post up the initial video of the drivetrain removal, but can't seem to edit it small enough. Any ideas? Or is anyone willing to work with it if I mail it to them on a flash drive?

I highly suggest against having any type of rev limiter on the car. Rev limits cut fuel, and re-enable it very quickly on a revlimiter, and even more so with a modded motor. This causes lean conditions and I know from experience what happens after that. Set the rev limiter to 7200 in every car you tune and dont ever change it.

There is nothing that you can do to a hydrolic roller cam that can harm it from the first day it is installed to 200k miles, they come hardened and "broken in" from the factory.

I can do it. How big is the video in MegaBytes?

You can upload it to me, mail it to me on a flash drive or whatever...
I can upload the entire video to Youtube, as I no longer have a time limit to my videos.

I set all my rev limiters to cut the spark and not the fuel, so the engine will not go lean when it cuts in. It is also a smoother cut out than having the fuel cut first. I also am getting very skilled with the hp tuners software.....and spent the extra cash on their tuning school books...which did clear up a few things.
