I'll be down there! Probably the person from the furthest away! I'll do what I can! Really the only factor is if my poor Fiero will make it all the way to GA

we droped out the old motor yesterday so we can get started on the wiring. we did find a few more things the car will need. a set of V6 fuel lines from the tank to the intake the shift cables are rough and could stand to have new ones but if not they do work but they may not for much longer. I will also see if I can come up with a new clutch for it since it will be open.
we will post up some pics today as well as list any other parts we run into.
Dean if there's anything that's getting replaced on my GT that you can use go for it. Also my old clutch had 1500 miles on it., but who knows it could be worn. I looked thru the garage I used to have extra oil filters for a v6 but the wife returned them a couple weeks ago.
I will keep looking. It's a large storage area out there. Just waiting for the movers to come and pack it all up. However the wife did say she got about $150 in refunds for returning it. (Ok I may have had a 5 year supply of oil filters but you never know ) She also gathered up all the pvc pipe fitting I had been stock pilling Incased of WW3 broke out. She got about $33 from those ( gift certificates ). BTW always send a woman and a child in to return stuff that you don't have a receipts for it works a lot better then a guy. O and if a guy is working is working the return desk send here in with a low cut shirt and no kid.

LOL! Yeah but if you have a woman cashier... women tend to clash pretty well... We had a sensor fail on the Mustang that we had just bought and went to swap it for a new one... within a few days under warrenty, with reciept, mind you.... Well talk about the 3rd degree. How do you know its bad... why is is bad, what did it do... What did you do to it to make it bad... good grief! Then the past 2 batteries we had to return under warrenty... yipes. Well how do I know its not the car ruining the batteries...you need to have the car serviced before you buy a new battery and find out why the batteries are failing! blah blah blah!
Back on topic... I checked my parts stash... its worse then I thought... Seems most of it is all f-body parts... got nothing on the list but the motor mount if it will work... Sorry! Guess it will just be me hands on...

I will bring down a few parts from my parts car (87 GT). I should have the Dogbone, various bolts, Starter, front mount, maybe a few other things. I'll have to see what I have removed from the vehicle and in buckets. I'll just throw them in my car and donate them to the project.

If I were to fly up, is anyone on the South side of Atlanta that wouldn't mind picking me up at the airport? Google says its 39 miles from the Airport to Whodeanie Customs.
I COULD rent a car, just trying to keep the costs down a bit, as still suffering from Christmas spending hehe.

JohnWPB, when do you think you'd be into Atlanta? Our rail system runs right into the airport and one of the lines to the North Springs station is maybe 15 miles from Whodeanies. Two others, the Chamblee or Doraville stations are a little further from Whodeanie's, but close to some of our paths.

As we near the build I am getting excited! Looks like we are getting great participation and all is going well...then....
I get orders to move! So Tweeter is moving to Germany and the Rottin family will be relocating to Illinois, or at least I will be going. The family will at least finish the school year in Florida. January is going to be a crazy busy month for both our families as we both go though some major changes. Both of us still plan on being there and have booked a room for the weekend. Comon up and join us!

Something happened yesterday that really took the wind out of my sails. I spent the evening thinking about it and had a hard time sleeping but I need to be honest with everyone with what happened to see how we proceed.
Yesterday the movers packed Joel’s family up to move them out. The forclosure is proceeding as expected. We had their dog hanging out over here so the movers didn't accidentally let her out. I went over to check on progress and that is when the first thing was asked of me that was a big kick in the gut. Joel's father asked how it would be received if Joel sold the car at some point down the road. I couldn't believe I was asked that. I told him that I thought it would be a bad idea as a lot of people will be spending a lot of time, a lot of money, and a lot of passion on this. I myself have many hours and close to $1000.00 in it. Later, after the movers were gone I asked his sister directly if Joel did not want the car and that I would like a direct honest answer of yes or no. She was honest and told me no. Again, a kick in the junk. I was taken aback. As many times as Joel came over and borrowed my Fiero I just couldn't believe it.
I sat and thought about this most of the night. Here is what I came up with. First, I needed to let everyone know what happened. Integrity demands that. Second, I tried to reason through it and the best I could come up with is that he cannot see the finished project but can only see the mess that currently exists. Third, we as a group need to decide how we will proceed and we need to decide quickly.
There are a few things we can do. We can proceed with plan A and give the car to Joel in the hope that the completed project is more in line with his love for my Fieros. Plan B would be to continue the build as planned and find another person to donate it to. Plan C is to discontinue the build so that no one spends any more time or money on it and we would have to decide what to do with the car and parts. There may even be a plan D that someone else comes up with.
Guys, I am stuck here. I barely slept last night and I don't know where to go from here. Please let me know what you think and how you think we should proceed.
Hmm. I to did not sleep well last night. Not for the same reason as you. So to the point. Joel likes your fieros (complete and nice looking) does Joel know we are going to make this one complete? But in my honest opinion if he was thinking about selling before even seeing it complete. Makes me think of the home make over show where a needing family gets a brand new house and 1) they sell it, 2) they can't afford it, or 3) they get foreclosed due to getting a mortgage .(aka car title loan)
Sadly, not everybody will be happy and cherish things that are given to them. Some people need to earn it on there own before they can appreciate a gift like this. My two cents I hope it makes sense.

I hate to hear this, we have already invested hrs. in the car installing the 6cyl and all the wiring to do so as well as had Oreillys donate a new clutch to the project. my thoughts on the matter, I say have a sit down with him tonight and find out why he feels this way. keep in mind that he is going threw a lot at this point in his life with being young as well as loosing everything he knows. he may just be venting. but if not we are still willing to finish the car even if it is not a group effort and donate it to some one we can all agree on to give it to. after all lots of people are going threw hard times and would love a good car.
let me know but I say lets finish it and see who needs it, maybe we can do a write in thread here on PFF and give it to the person that needs it most ??? D.

My wife's thoughts were that he may be planning to sell it to help his family's financial situation. Since this is your car, John, let's go ahead and finish it. Put it up for sale or raffle it for $20 bucks a ticket. Take the proceeds and give to a charity or directly to a needy family of your choice, since you started this project.

What kind of 16 YO doesn't want a car? Kids these days... To be clear, I haven't read all about the car, family, plans or anything. None of that makes any difference to me. I'm just willing to help out no matter who it goes to. You could always put a lien on it too. That way it's his as long as he wants/needs it. If he doesn't want it anymore he can give it back and you can give it to somebody else. At least that way you would make sure that he doesn't turn around and sell it for $500 next month.
But if he doesn't want it, he doesn't want it. If he wants a car but just not the Fiero, he will just sell it to get something else. Try to get a straight answer from him. Tell him it's okay if he doesn't want the Fiero. There is no shortage of people who are in need and will appreciate your generosity.
Regardless, I'll still be there to help out in any way I can. And I'll get to visit my big sis that moved to Crabapple Falls for a bit too.

I would say you need to have a heart to heart with Joel directly... young kids sometimes vent and say things they really don't mean. Alot of it boils down to if they can't have it NOW they don't want it... or say they don't... this generation anyway. He is going through ALOT though. I have a teen ager (16 years old) and I never know what is REALLY going through her head. So you need to dig deep with him. But let him know its OK if he really does not want it. Don't make him feel obligated or guilty. Maybe then you can get the truth through the frustration.
That being said, if you really love and appreciate a car or anything for that matter, you fight for it and don't give up even when you are frustrated! Ask me how I know... I'm that type of person to a fault...
What is Joel's motivation behind this car...
Here is a bit about my passion... and why I ask about Joel's motivation... Seems cars for me is what keeps me planted and pyschological sound. My self worth seems to hinge alot on my abilities to DO. So if I am able to have that creative outlet I can handle what comes. Also I'm a dreamer and I can't stand to see cars killed when they can be saved. To that end I have projects that other gave up on and I keep on, because I have a true passion for it (and I'm a bit off my rocker...LOL).
To over illustrate my passion and stupidity: (its gonna be long winded-sorry) So my first car...I had a 87 Firebird I made into a showcar. It was my daily driver since I was 16. I fought and fought to keep it running through a blow top end and 2 blown bottom ends. After all that I started to learn to do my own work to save $. Note I say LEARN. I'm not a mechanic and have NO training but I will try and learn by being hands on and reading. My x-best friend and I tackled everything. He grew up building cars with his dad. He agreed to teach me the mechanical. I was the patient detail junkie so it was perfect partnership. The bird got a 3.4 and all the goodies. I got the looks where they needed to be. Then relationships got in the way and the car has been down since 2006. We tore it all the way down mechnically for a total makeover, things got sorted, and he bailed. Its beyond my limited abilities to fix it. But I have not given up! While the bird was down, my then back up car, a 90 chevy dually was stolen and had the motor taken. I got the truck back. That was another one of OUR projects... got a new motor, but its not plug and play... and it sits and waits. The quick and easy fix after the dually was stolen. An 87 pulsar abandoned at a friends shop. Well it needed a rebuild that got complicated by tearing it down too far to paint everything. He put it on the back burner and its sits still...
Are you seeing the common theme... building motors... he never taught me that. But again, I have the dedication to wait and it will get sorted out. I will learn to build them.
Now on to the fiero... I was talked into a supposedly easier fix up to be a driver in 2005 (good motor)... we got it running, sort of... Its never been trouble free or an easy fix... even after tons of time and $ it was never quite right and still had tons of starting & battery drain issues. The car has been down more then it has ever been running. But I NEVER gave up.
So in all that sorted mess above... until recently, I have not had my OWN car that ran since I was laid off in August of 2008...and not had a reliable car of my OWN since 2006 (bird) to drive. Thankfully we had my spouses car & we carpooled together when I worked temp jobs. However, I was not investing the money in MY projects while my family needed the $ more. So finally about a year ago I was hired full time and I waited till my 1 year Anniversary (this September) and started to bring the dead Fiero back on my own. Well the little car is back and it gives me faith that I can get my other cars back from the dead too. I feel like maybe I have excorcised the previous owner demons to make it reliable. Honestly there is even a part of me that REALLY wants to try an fix mine and my buddies issues (there is the insane part creeping out with over board optimism)
Ok back to the point of me bringing all that up. The common theme... I have the dedication & motivation when it comes to my cars and I don't give up and look for the easy route! Even when its beyond me and I need help from others. Can you find that in Joel... is he that person? Does he maybe just need some positive to offset all the negative & make him feel passion for something again?! He might be hating life in general, hating himself for being helpless. And in that hating even this car because it seems as impossible as everything else. Think about the type of person Joel is when it comes to cars... He drove your Fiero and liked it, but was he ever interested in helping work on his while you were helping him out with it? Might give you some insight into how he sees cars in general. Transporation Point A to point B (like my daughter) or something to care for and take pride in (like me).
Ok I will shut up now. Just want to give the kid a fair shake and figure out what HE REALLY wants...

Unless it is cancelled, I plan on being at Dean's next weekend. I'd like to see it get finished, as many have already made plans to attend and have thrown resources at this. Anne and I are playing Motel for some of the folks coming in from outer-state. Might be too late in the game for some to reschedule. My $ 0.02 would be: Fix the car, then try and fix the problem with the kid. If he can't/won't take it, we can certainly use some of the other suggestions mentioned above in this thread to do something good/humanitarian with the completed project.
So, if nothing else develops, I plan on being in Woodstock next weekend

Well... this is a bit of a damper on the mood of things, I hope all works out well! I still plan on being there, as I don't have much of a choice hehe. I purchased my plane ticket this morning. If the build is off, then I hope Dean can use a couple of free hands in the shop for something else over the weekend
@2002z28ssconv: Thanks for the generous offer to ride up with you from Orlando, but the 3 hour drive from here to Orlando, then another 8 to Atlanta... I decided to just get then in a little over an hour instead
I will get into Atlanta at 8am on Friday morning, then take Marta to the closest terminal to the shop. I guess that is like 15 miles away or so. So at that point a pick-up by someone would be nice, or I could take a cab. I still have not set a hotel to stay at yet, any suggestions as to where most everyone is staying, any open beds that someone wants to split costs for a room ect ect...
Microtel Inn and Suites Woodstock/Atlanta 305 Molly Ln, Woodstock, GA 30189 (678) 738-0001  (678) 738-0900 (Fax)
Speak to Gail (The manager)...she will give you a special rate of $62.10 plus tax and it includes complementary breakfast. My total for two nights was 141.60 so it should be $70.80 per night including tax.

I vote that we still finish the car next weekend. I think that is a given.
Personally...my Fiero means enough to me that nobody could get me to give it up for any reason. Last time my life was in shambles, it was the only thing of value that I hung onto...and it would be the same if I fell on hard times again. But not everyone feels that way about a car, and if Joel doesn't feel that way, perhaps that isn't how we should be helping him. I like Fierofool's suggestion as a backup plan should we decide not to give the car to Joel...I already know of at least half a dozen people that would buy a ticket or two.
Regardless, I still plan to be there next weekend...and I still plan on bringing the parts I have promised.
My wife's thoughts were that he may be planning to sell it to help his family's financial situation. Since this is your car, John, let's go ahead and finish it. I remember being 16 my parents never had any money. My first car was $100+ tax and title. (84 Chrysler laser 2.5 turbo. Needed a new head basket and starter) I never once thought about selling it to get money to help out the family. So if that is what he is thinking that is great that he's willing to do what ever he can to help out his family. Just another way to look at it.
I'll still be there either way. Next weekend my work has relaxed a little and will likely give me the time off (long story)

John, if you want, I'll come down to the MARTA rail station and pick you up. I'm sending you an email with information.
Thank you kindly for the offer! I just got off the phone with Racing_Master (Sean). He PM'd me the other day when I requested a ride to the shop. He is gonna pick me up at the North Springs Station somewhere around 10am or so on Friday. I will call while I am on the train, and get him an exact time that I will be pulling into the station.
As for Sleeping arrangements, Sean is booking a room at the MicroTel, and we are gonna split the cost. I am just bringing a carry-on bag, so should not be any trouble with space, as it can even sit between my legs, as its just a short hop from the station to the shop. So all the stars have aligned and its a go!
I am really looking forward to meeting everyone in person!
As for what Joel wants to do, as in keep the car, or decide not to take it, no matter how it works out, we are going to get to work on a car together, share some stories and have a good time while doing it. I am sure we can all talk more about it in person, on what the decision is. Bottom line is, the car needs fixed, and we are gonna do it!

i plan on being there probably to just get in the way- just curious did joel know whats been going on and the scope of it, or is he just having this layed in his lap and kind of shocked and embarrassed by the kindness and thought that johnny has put into this? maybe he's just to embarrassed to say i really don't want a fiero, i want a honda or a nissan or some kind of car that the kids think are cool. i mean whoever thought a 4-door import would be the vehicle of choice of america's youth. maybe its as simple as that. johnny you need to talk to joel and just put the cards on the table. maybe a needy older person more familiar with the fiero might appreciate it more. just spouting off- see you at whodeanies!!

Don't forget my offer to transport parts for folks...
I'll get the west side if Charlie can get the east side. I'd prefer to pick them up ahead of time instead of "day of" if you know what you want to send. Can't speak for Charlie, however.

Ditto! I'll be in the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs area on Monday and Friday of that week, so I can pick up things on those days, but will make other arrangements if anyone needs. If it's rain-sensitive, I'd prefer to pick up on Friday, if rain is in the forecast for the week.

Johnwpb and Racing_Master, the straightest route from the North Springs station is to go north on Ga. 400 to the Holcomb Bridge-Roswell exit # 7B. That is Hwy 140 which intersects Hwy 92. It's a straight shot and will take you straight to Whodeanie's and save you the long trip around the interstate.
I've also just been made aware that the rail terminal has been moved to the South terminal, but it's still easy access from baggage. Just take the Red Line North Springs train for a hassle-free ride.
