guess you haven't heard about the new Mustang Cobra coming out next year....650 HP 200mph. This argument is stupid. No matter what you have SOMEONE OR SOMETHING is going to be faster then you.
You're thinking of the GT500, and yes, this argument is stupid. The OP simply asked what the 1/4 mile times are of LS-swapped Fieros are, not the efficiency or the the cost or whether or not the 3800 is better.
Built 3800 VS built v8. The v8 was a torque monster that would bash your head against the back glass. The best way I can describe the 3800 is WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE hey look, were doing 140! I guess you could call the 3800 more "refined" power meaning smoother all the way through? I dunno. Both were fun to ride in.
Since the topic is V-8 1/4 mile times, I swapped in an off-the-shelf ZZ4 that is rated at 355hp. Dyno shows 309 at the wheels and I pulled a 12.3 in the 1/4 mile.
As for the 3800 vs. V-8, An off the shelf 3800SC is rated at 260hp (when they were available in a crate engine) and every Fiero I have seen run with an unmodded 3800SC runs in the mid to high 13's. Yes many here have modified a 3800 to get huge horsepower and impressive times. FieroX started with a stock 3800SC and ran mid 13's with it way back in the day, He now has a 3800 turbo screaming in the low 10's. And I do not doubt he may be pulling into the 9's soon. But comparing a modifed 3800 to a stock V-8 is not really a fair comparison. Bottom line is it all comes down to the basics. Horsepower vs. weight. If you drop in a 250hp engine in a Fiero regardless if it is a 4-cyl, V-6, or V-8 it will only go so fast in a 1/4 mile. The only variance will be the weight difference. When you look at the 1/4 mile thread, See the mods that were done as well to get the power to get the times.
In my particular case I opted for a 355hp 404lbs V-8 over a 260hp 445lbs V-6.
A 2010 Camaro SS with 426hp ran 13.0 seconds in the 1/4 mile. A Fiero with 355hp runs 12.3. Camaro weighs around 3800lbs and the Fiero is around 2800lbs. Again it all comes down to horsepower vs. weight.
Many new high performance cars are running over 500hp. So if you want to be faster you will need to get over 500hp as well.

Pfft.... Again, isn't there something else we can argue over?
Hell no there isnt....When is the last time we all got in a weiner measuring match over V-8 vs 3800....I cant even remember the last time a good Thread like this ended up in the Trashcan because all the **** talking. This place has been dead lately with nothing but the same questions being asked and no argueing so this is a good Thread....I mean it even brought Orief out of hibernation.......
Back on the subject.....SBC swaps are slow, underpowered and belong in farm trucks....
I guess many folks here are not aware of the 2012 ZL1 Camaro, but it's has a 580-horsepower, 556 lb.-ft. of torque, 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine. It will blow away any Mustang yet created, and would probably blow away the base Corvette. It's barely street legal. Yes I would take that over any Fiero.
Hope to see u at several shows...
The ZL1 will be fast but it took GM bolting on a SC to complete with an all motor Mustang...Mustang will now come back with a SC version that will knock the ZL1 down a peg...As much as I am a Chevy guy they did the new 5.0s right and they r screamers stock.....add a few bolt on to the motor and hang on. Ford finally got if right..
Well being people have always "drooled over my Fiero's", I'll chime in. My state moto is "Esse Quam Videri" - To be, rather than to seem.
You're new. Give it some time. Madcurl's car? Underneath all the chrome plating, bondo, bing bling, and expensive wheels is the same spaceframe that was used on the 1984 bumper pad car. With a butchered roof to boot. Solid tie rod rear suspension geometry. Outboard shocks. McPherson struts in the back. Cast iron knuckles. You wanna die for that? Don't sell yourself short, it's an imitation, nothing more. A new Hyundia Genesis sedan will whip it. And you want to talk about engine reliability, don't get me started on the Northstar that's in the back of that car.
I wouldn't recommend the Camaro either, but the LS powered car will destroy any of the supercharged 3800's in any platform; Fiero or FWD. The Camaro is the kind of platform you can do a wheelstand on reliably. Zero use for 180 mph? How about 80 mph? I derive the words like "shitbox" from driving a Fiero in moderate speed conditions, when the front end begins to lift off the ground and you feel like you might die making a fast maneuver in traffic. Short wheelbase and citation suspension design is for the crows. I'd crush every Fiero in existence before making a statement like you just did, and I've been to the shows.
Given that we don't all want or need race prep cars for the track, and given that 99% of the drivers today can't begin to tap the handling that a car like Madcurl's does have available, I find your disgust to be laughable. It's akin to knocking the handling of a 90's sportbike because some expert rider says the new stuff is so much better. Few people can actually push a 90's sportbike to it's limits. I've owned a few newer cars that are suppose to be superior to my Fiero, including a Nissan 300ZX and a Celica GT. They are gone, the Fiero is still here, and always will be.

Its because every thread ends up like this that you dont see any new threads. What is the point if they are going to all go down in flames?
Who cares how many cylinders there are. If I could find a V8 that was comparable in price, durability and availability with the 3800 I wouldn't mind trying it out. The 3800 is just so easy. It can handle a ton of abuse, staying together with 700hp in stock form. It just seems like nobody does a v8 swap right. They are either content with the sound and show or they can't afford to make it a screamer adding to the initial cost.

That's they point, I think. There's just a lot of bang for your buck with a 3800 swap and those engines were put in everything from land yachts to vans.

my 355sbc thats currently in my nova (stripped nova about 2200lbs).. makes approx.. 325hp.. runs awesome, feels fast, and i can typically beat most mustang gt's i run across(excluding newest gen gt's). cobras, will smoke me of course..
this is the engine im swapping into my fiero, with the f23 trans.. i feel this will be a fun, great handling addition to my current stable of vehicles. I could care less if someones 3800sc fiero will stomp me. I know this car will be quick (atleast to me).. and i know it handles better than my nova haha.. TO ME, IT WILL BE A FUN CAR TO CRUISE AROUND WITH..
my dune buggy with the 2003 suzuki gsxr600 engine, with 4.61 final gearing and 22" tall tires.. is FAST!.. on pavement it launches like a mofo and pulls up to redline in 6th gear (100mph).. on the dune buggy forums its the same arguments as here, sport bike engines, vs big v8's.... never ending arguments... but i like my buggy, its fun and handles like its on rails.
so to me, these arguments are pointless.... i dont get why there has to be fights over which is better.. dumb.

Point being is you had 3x the displacement and struggled to win... So I wouldn't discredit those "juice cartons" as there are a lot that would destroy a V8.

And my point is I DONT GIVE A DAMN even if I was a slow joe who could do the 1/4 mile in 10 hours... There will ALWAYS BE SOMEONE FASTER THAN YOU even with 3800 super turbo'd or even a V-12 someone will leave you in the dust .... my point is... I had fun showing a smart ass ricer that someone is faster than him .... thats it thats all !!! ........Would I take on a 3800 HELL NO he's faster than me !!!
If I wanted to be faster than anyone here I would drive this car on the track !!!
again were talking about fiero....as far as being 3x bigger in displacement and struggling,,,you must b in denial...now put the turbo on v8 and tables r turn...no replacement for displacement or something like that...but u get the picture.....but i do think people forget that....for whatever a 4,6 cylinder can do a v8 can do the same and still b on top......but again were talking about being in a fiero and v8 doesn't have the trans to handle it.....

DING, DING, DING That is the real reason you don't see higher numbers for the v8's. Ray

Now you just sound like one of the people on youtube comments. "He has a turbo, put a turbo on the V8 and it will be faster blah blah blah." Point is based off that video, that Honda CRX comes with 1.6L and his Fiero has 5.0L... That's 3x the displacement. Denial? Are you serious? At what point in that video did he significantly pull away? He doesn't, he barely pulls on it.

If that 1.6L has a turbo pushing 20 psi of boost it is essentially now a 4.8L or better is it not. Ray

I'm not trying to troll you or anything just trying to point out that those small displacement engines deserve a lot of credit for what they do. If you don't give a damn about being fast in the 1/4 then why do you care so much about beating that Honda? Serious question.

I have to disagree with that, It still has the same bore, the same stroke, the same # of cylinders. If we wen't by you said then a Mini Cooper S is no longer a 1.6. As far as I see it it just has become more efficient that's all. Edit to add: But I do understand where you coming from with boost adding positive displacement, I'm just going off definition.

Its funny a board of sharing is reduced to this. I have had better conversation in PMs then I have had in the open forum. Where did the OP ask anything about 3800 times or comparing, you guys want to come in and swing your dicks around have at it I don't want to see it.
Frankly its not been the same here for a couple of years now. Sometimes I wish Cliff was a Dick and just toss half of us out and put the fear in the rest of us. You ever wonder what happened to all of the active vendors? Why would they want to come around and be part of this kind of environment? So many of the old timers don't even post anymore. Perhaps its time I just stay in OT and avoid this all together.
I'm sorry I came in here today. Sorry I poked my head into a 3800 thread once again and caused trouble.
Headed back to OT see you in a couple of months.

Lighten up! whats wrong with talking a lil smack? I think it is all in good fun. Again this is a car forum on the internet. If there were no arguments/drama/weiner contest then it wouldn't be very entertaining now would it?

I beleive you when you say that you are NOT interested is going fast. Why not get what you really want.... You already know so I don't have to say it....
I'm just pulling your chain and having a lil fun..so don't get all puffed up on me..
That would be best. Nobody is forcing you or even asking you to regulate this thread. You provide no input to the discussion.
Did you
V8 1/4mile times?

Serious answer : I had fun showing a smart ass ricer (Honda dipshit) at a DRAGSTRIP that someone is faster than him .... thats it thats all !!! I'm positive someone else is faster than me, but ya dont see me shouting my face off saying I can take on a F-18 on a quarter mile !!!!! In ten years from now I'll still be driving the Widow with the SAME engine and tranny .. maybe not the same spaceframe though ... so V8 or 3800 in a 1/4 mile... simple I answered that .... To those whose have sooped up turbo'd engines and live for " Fast and Furious "... it will get you criminal record if caught on public highway showing off your testosterones and in doing so might get someone killed.....
I know you are NOT trolling me ....but you did get my attention IP wise....
