The only 'real' requirement that I had for Dave when we started talking about this project last year was numbers. I said that I wanted 300hp and 300ft/lbs. After that it was pretty much up to Dave to 'get creative'. The fact that he had his car as a guinea pig helps. Most of what he's doing is coming directly from his car. There are some differences, but the fact that he drives one helps. I have no doubt that this setup will more than live up to what I'm looking for and like I've said, I wait in giddy, school-girl anticipation to see what comes next. Hey, that kinda sounds like a soap opera, huh? And these are the days at the Haus!
pm's sent....guys feel free to PM me for any questions i dont want to take over the guru's thread
I told Ryan and I'll say it here, I'm glad that Ryan can generate some business from the Haus and take it one step further. I have no intention of stepping on his toes as we are friends, so if any logs are wanted on my future swaps, I'll have Ryan fabricate a set up. I do need to say that I love the diameter of the tube we are using. There should be plenty of flow and some decent power gains from these. The true test will be the dyno of my gold GT prior to the logs and then after the install. Dave

Just got through reading your VR6 thread, just have two questions for you considering you are very fimiliar with VW's - Considering the Mk4 Jetta/golf used 5x100 wheels with a 38mm offset and a 57.1 center bore (please correct me if I'm wrong) why not upgrade to the Mk4 front brakes? Is it anymore difficult then swapping to the Lebaron setup for the 84-87 fieros?
Lastly, I am interested in getting a set of 2001-2002 Jetta/Golf 17 x 7 inch 10 spoke wheels for my car, is the offset on these wheels also 38mm like the one's that are on you VR6 car? Would they work on an 86 with an 88 cradle?
How are you not blowing the tires off the way it is.....gotta admit......400+ would be kinda cool sitting in the garage! No, Dave, I'm not saying go farther, 300 is enough for me..........for now!

As for the VW brake question....I have a set of Audi TT brake rotors with Jetta Mk IV calipers on my bench waiting for me to gather 5 minute of free time to put them on the VR6 Fiero. To give an idea of how much free time I have (and I really am not complaining here...I like to be overwhealmed...I function flawlessly under extreme pressure), my orange and black GT has been sitting in my shop since early summer and hasn't moved since. I planned on driving it for Halloween, but I haven't done anything to it since except rinse off the dust.
Rich, those power logs that we are using won't flow as well as your headers, but this will allow the use of a catalytic converter (if desired) and no cutting of the trunk.
I'm a bit under the weather today, so I started working on some stuff, but I realized that my skills were not up to par today and decided it was best to not do too much.

Loving the quality of the workmanship here... the fine details make a good engine swap, and it looks like these lucky Fieros are gone over mechanically with a fine toothed comb! Top stuff!

Let me share my story in short form. I bought my car as a completed swap. I travel for a living and am generally only home on weekends, so I needed something proven. A car that I could have sit in the garage all week, turn the key on Saturday morning, and go driving for a few hours, then bring it home and put it up until the next weekend.
The car was in need of a few things, which I took care of to get through my first PA inspection with it. But from that point on it was a string of mechanical issues & failures. I took the car to several different shops, and put a ton of money into it before I went to Dave @ the Haus.
I've gotta admit, it was a bit uncomfortable to hear just how poor some of the workmanship was that I had paid premium dollars for. But the peace for me came from the fact that Dave went through every system on the car, from the battery to the exhaust tips. He told me what was right, what was wrong, and what would be ok for now that might present an opportunity later. He let me make my choices on what to repair / replace, listened to and applied my reliability goals to his efforts, and gave me back the car I wanted.
I would swear to you that if your car comes back less than perfect from Dave's shop, it's because YOU wouldn't let him fix it or swap it correctly, and not because he didn't want to or know how to. Dave puts his name and reputation on every tightened nut that comes out of his roll-up door, and he stands behind you all the way.
I'm not actually in love with him, and I dont get paid for this, but after some rough experiences with some other shops, it's awfully nice to be treated right.
Cheers, Rich

The cold I was fighting kicked my butt, but I'm feeling close to normal again. I'll update this thread within the next few days. I have Alltrbo's logs back from Jet-Hot and installed. All the parts are finally at the Haus for the Mera that I am doing some work on (clutch, suspension etc). Vince's swap is going as planned and should be on the road in about ten days. Dave's swap will commence shortly after...and in the meantime I'm planning the pre-eval for this Tuesday. Rumor has it that I'll be doing a turbo kit on a SMART car in about a month. Other than that, the shop is quite busy....I like busy. It keeps the lights on...lol I'll post some pics this next week. I have about 60 pics saved on my camera from all the projects that I am wrapping up. One of my employees bought me a lab coat, so now I am really in the mood to build some cool stuff. Dave

Dave, I'll be sure to get a pic or two in the lab coat.
Here are some pics of Vince's Fiero that I haven't had time to load up until today...
Starting point.....
Test fit of the accessories and logs....This swap will be receiving the first set of Ryan's logs (endorsed by the Guru ). Once the fits are exactly as we like, Ryan will be offering them up for sale. The first three sets run are already taken by Vince, Dave D, and myself. I fell a little behind schedule due to my cold/flu last week, but I'm back on track now. Also, we fabricated a low mount alternator bracket and I plan on fabricating a steel dog bone mount....rumor has it that there are a few people that are unhappy with their aluminum dogbone mount and I figure I'd try something a little different.

You just decided for me which top-end paint theme I want to go for (I've been tossing around several ideas for the past year). Very close to that, except with Candy Plasma Blue valve covers (when the car gets painted), and a black crinkle finish powdercoat for the plenum, though with the "3100 SFI" sanded bare for a nice aluminum offset.

bmwguru, I see you welded the holes in the LIM. You need to open up the coolant flow passage under the rectangle cap on the side of the LIM or you are restricting coolant to the opposite head.

Jncomutt, thanks for the info. Ya learn something new everyday. I'll be sure to take care of this on my swaps.
Here are the logs and Y-pipe ready to be shipped to Jet-Hot. We had them mocked up, but wound up remaking the Y-pipe from scratch because the fit wasn't exactly what we were aiming for. This second edition fits like it was born there. The requirements I needed was to be able to install the set with the drivetrain in the car and little trouble doing it. Also, I wanted a 3" collector to eliminate backpressure. I also wanted it to drop to the factory location to be able to run a high flow cat and/or open up the possibilities for exhaust. I also wanted to ensure that the a/c system can be retained. Finally, (the biggest one) I wanted to make sure that changing the spark plugs is easier with these logs than headers and the factory manifolds. All steps are done.
Those logs look great! Running the exhaust via the factory routing opens up a HUGE possibility for cat and muffler options. I can really relate on the idea of changing plugs, that was a factor for me building my headers too. I did a spark plug change on my car at the dyno in 13 minutes, no joke. The dyno guys couldn't believe how easy it could be to change the plugs on a mid engine car... turbo pipes
Your projects are always top notch!

I should call this month, "It can't get any Worse". About ten days ago, at 3:15am my alarm company called me to tell me that my shop was on fire. I laughed and told them that wasn't possible....I'm too careful. They said back, the fire department is on the scene. So, I grabbed my Fiero and made it to the shop in record time to find 7 fire trucks finishing putting out the fire on the building next door to mine. Someone had left a candle lit in their office and went home. The place next door is a complete loss inside and the fire did not even blister the paint on my wall. Good thing there was a fire wall between the shops. I did see the firemen browsing through my shop at one point checking out all the Fieros. Needless to say, there was no damage to my shop at all. Not even smoke. The VR6 and my GOF were inside the shop that night too. So, the natural gas company has shut off the service to my building until they get clearance. I have been working with no heat and came down with a Flu that has been kicking my ass for about a week now. I took my kids to the park to play some basketball yesterday and blacked out. Anyway, That is about that....hopefully my month won't get any worse. Dave
On the bright side.. No Fiero was hurt, right? Hope you feel better man. I'm right with you on "how can it get worse?" At my job 2 people have quit and another is in the hospital with pneumonia. So I'm the only one working right now. Argh.

yeah, I'm working solo right now with a 103 degree fever today. Ryan has been coming down to help me keep up with the workload while Nick is out due to a family issue. It sucks....no heat....45 degree day with lots of rain and a high fever. My normal body temp is 97.5, so fevers really kick my butt. Dave

Sadly, there are more Fieros in my shop than BMW's. I didn't want to announce this yet, but I am in the process of selling my shop right now. The deal should be done my mid-summer. I'll still be working on the Fieros at the Haus, but I'm retiring from German Import work. I plan on taking a few lifts, the alignment rack and my tools and build a new shop. We are also relocating down to the Kentucky area. I've had it with getting into fist fights at the food store or gas station. Jersey is not the place for me. All the current swaps in progress will be finished before I move and I should have the new shop up and running within a few months of relocating. I make really good money working on the German cars, but I need a break to spend time with my kids and still keep the Haus open. Dave

Man honestly if you come up this way (near millbrook) I'll work for ya (evenings/weekends) . Millbrook is a nice part of NY. borderline country/city living. Right on the cusp. The people are friendly and the ONLY place to go for bmw or mercedes repairs is the stealerships up here. hence why i asked you questions. Everywhere you turn is yet another BMW or Mercedes driving by. I also know another member on here that knows more about fiero's then most people i know that would kill for the opportunity to work on them for a living. I'm teaching him advanced fiber glassing this summer if we get time. Learns fast and loves what he does. Just a thought.
i used to live in jersey as well and i had to leave that state has gone to hell in a hand basket. I wish i could have gotten my car done at your shop, but Kentucky is a bit of a haul. Good luck with the move.

I used to love working on the German cars. I'm a very good flat rate tech. i used to be able to flag out over 100 hours every week without fail. Now, I've made the money I need, and i really enjoy working on the Fieros. I realize that they will eventually dwindle down to nothing, but I am ok with that. I don't have the love of working on the german cars anymore cause the type of owner has changed. In 2004, almost everyone would drop off their car, tell me to fix it and don't worry about the price....and not complain when they picked it up. The average Benz owner had two more. Now, I get screamed at cause a front brake job on a BMW is $450...and that is still cheaper than the dealership. So, I am retiring from the German life, but i do plan on keeping the swaps going. I really enjoy them and it gives me piece of mind. Dave

Like i said... i wouldn't make it a primary source of income up here but it would be happily welcomed in my area. The ONLY place to get a mercedes or bmw worked on are the stealerships... there is no other option here. but eh... it's warmer in ky.

I'll explain my reason tomorrow...I'm not feeling very well. I didn't go to the shop today, but wound up staying in bed drinking gatorade, soup, and I finally can keep food down now. I fell like I'm getting better, so I should be back in the saddle in a day or two. Dave

Dang Dave, you're having it even rougher than usual. Take care of yourself, or at least make your kids do it. I'm glad your shop didn't burn down! I don't say that only because my Fiero is in it, hehe.
Glad to hear you're getting better, keep it up. I gotta sleep, Lunesta is kicking in (I'll be loony very soon).
See ya.

These came back from Jet-Hot on Thursday, but I haven't been able to do much with them yet. Today, I started feeling better....no fever or chills. I'm going to take it easy tomorrow and hopefully get back on track on Monday. Dave
