I have been considering a hitch of some sort. I am building a DD for work and have a hard enough time trying to figure out just where to put my soda pop and some times have test equipment to haul. If I can find a tiny enclosed trailer, It would do pretty well I think.
Where do you hook the safety chains? Or are they required on a class 1 hitch? Also, what do you plan to do to hold the license plate up when the trailer is hooked up? I like what you did, just the little details.

Look at the Pic again, they're there.

Yeah that is what Fierofreak00 did to his Red Notch back with the GT tail lamp car a couple of years ago. Uses the B body Caprice License plate for covering the Fuel filler.
It's a pretty cool mod.

Looks like a well thought out setup, however my only concern is what secures that plastic bumper support to the frame of the car? Just those couple bolts? Did you do anything to reinforce that piece? I honestly cannot imagine what you would want to tow with a fiero but maybe a sunfish sailboat or a small jetski or even a little 4x8 trailer lightly loaded? Either way the work you did on it to make the receiver solid looks real good!! Peace

That is my only concern as well... The three bolts in the bumper are pretty sturdy, but get any serious weight on them and you are likely to remodel the rear of the car very quickly. The hitch assembly is put together extremely well from what I saw at Dells and in these photos.
The one I built is similar, only it doesn't actually attach to the impact beam. It attaches to the bumper mount flanges on the ends where the bolts pass through, and is secured using Grade 8 hardware and some very very large washers. You could remove the impact beam and still have a solid hitch. That would be my only suggestion to improve upon the already good design I see in this thread... Just tie it in to the mount points to add some strength...
Of course, they may not ever pull a loaded teardrop weighing half a ton down the road like I do.
I did replace the bolts and with grade 8 bolts and washers. My thoughts on the towing capacity are: it takes an extreme amount of force to cave it in, in the event of an accident. My guess is that this should be able to tow around 500 pounds. The Fiero's weight capacity is technically only 300 some odd pounds. @MinnGreenGT I am willing to bet that it will pull that trailer just fine because your tongue weight is only about 50 pounds.

Absolutley... we were going to give it a test pull around the lot, but I guess we just never got around to it!
Actually I don't tow with mine but i did put a hitch on to attach my bike carrier. It works great and gives me another reason to drive the car ......to the bike trail
Just sitting around the garage talking, and Kev asked why we hadn't given him parts to take down to you guys yet. Realized we never heard back from you guys about cost. Any word on that? :-)

I was thinking 150.00. That would get it done but you would have to get the hitch and ball.
