We'll this sucks. To make a long story short - we have a bunch of beer stuck on the opposite side of a patio door encased in about an inch of ice. We got the door open this morning through the team effort of three hairblowers running full tilt directed around the frame. We left the beer out there to chill for a bit while we ran to the butcher to get some steaks to throw on the BBQ later on this afternoon. When we came back, however, the door was frozen solid. We have now burnt out two of the hairblowers, and for the life of us we can't get the dang door open to get at our beer. With the -40C weather our beer (All three flats) is going to be FUBAR'd if we don't rescue it pronto. Not to mention the whole frozen door thing is going to put a serious kaibosh on the ol' all day bender / BBQ plans.

Does anyone else have any great ideas as to how to go about getting the door open? We are on the 19th floor of our apartment building, so shimmying from our neighbours balcony doesn't sound too appealing. Also, we have checked with our neighbours and nobody seems to have a large heater or anything that we could use. Aaarghh - I hate winter.

That happend to me few days ago. High humitity inside, below zero outside, and cheap apartment doors are the prob.
My slider had litrally about an inch all the way around it when I woke up!

Have you tried a torch? Its probably cold enough that even if you melt it, it freezes almost instantly. Maybe if your quick it could work.

Victory is mine!! We sprayed WD40 around the areas of the frame as we thawed it out and it seemed to prevent it from refreezing. The beer are now nice and safe indoors.

Thank God

If this ever happens again, don't be afraid to use a brick!

(unless it's a wood or metal door... then upgrade to a sledge)

If you had stayed out of the beer this morning, you would have known to walk around the house.

If you had stayed out of the beer this morning, you would have seen the earlier reference to the "19th floor".

That wasn't any ordinary beer out there, that was Canadian Beer, the good stuff!
Good save, eh?!
Sounds like you should have filmed it for a new Molson commercial!

Actually by the time i got to the 19th floor part, I was laughing so hard I couldn't see.
Reminded me of a beer run some years ago in Florida where the keys were locked in the car. The real problem was four bags of ice laying in the back seat. Reverse ice problem- Thawing..
