I was building a 16" reflector from scratch a few years back..... Figuring the mirror, and whoops!!(!!) This piece of glass was worth about $800 until I dropped it......

I kept the big pieces... haven't had the heart to throw them away.
(kinda like saving your fiero after it burns I guess)

Maybe I'll put them on ebay........ Fellow amateur astronomers, feel my pain.... (I can laugh about it now, but when it happened, I'm pretty sure I cried )

Not even worth resizing to smaller diameter, or are they too thick for smaller diameter reflectors? It must have landed just right (actually wrong). I would not think glass that thick would break so easily.

EDIT
punctuation

You wouldn't think so... but yeah, it split into about 4 pieces

It's about 1" thick. (thin in the world of optics)

Are you going to get rid of that glass? If you plan to, I have a really good use for it. Last fall we got into flint knapping (making arrowheads). Glass is easier to work than flint, and that would be perfect for knapping......

Consumer Reporter: Alright. Fine. Fine. Well, we'd like to show you another one of Hess's products. It retails for $1.98, and it's called Bag O' Glass. [ holds up bag of glass ] Mr. Hess, this is simply a bag of jagged, dangerous, glass bits.

ryan.hess: Yeah, right, it's you know, it's glass, it's broken glass, you know? It sells very well, as a matter of fact, you know? It's just broken glass, you know?

Consumer Reporter: [ laughs ] I don't understand. I mean, children could seriously cut themselves on any one of these pieces!

ryan.hess: Yeah, well, look - you know, the average kid, he picks up, you know, broken glass anywhere, you know? The beach, the street, garbage cans, parking lots, all over the place in any big city. We're just packaging what the kids want! I mean, it's a creative toy, you know? If you hold this up, you know, you see colors, every color of the rainbow! I mean, it teaches him about light refraction, you know? Prisms, and that stuff! You know what I mean?

I would keep the chunks of glass and cement it to a path or your porch. It would bee cool to see it embedded in a walking path!

If you sprayed it silver and put it in the sun, would it fry insects at a certain distance above it? Maybe put some bait there...
