Good question and a tough one. One I struggled with before...

Actually, I leveled suspicion of racial discrimination against him. I can not know his heart. That will be up for others to decide. However, he has been reported before for racial remarks. Against other hispanics. He told them he would "work them like a ****** ". He is from the Honduras. His remarks were directed towards tex-mex hispanics. For those that may not realize, tex-mex hispanics think different of native Mexicans. Central American hispanics also have their own culture. Let's just say there is individual pride in each of these cultures.
Now, it may just be true that the driller just does not like me. That should not have been the case. I am sure now that it is though, whatever. Of the ten men which comprise the two crews on my work week, I am the only caucasian. I get along with and am liked by all the others but his up the butt buddy, who I do at least get along with.
Being new to the rig in January, I was sure to greet everybody with a "good morning", wish them a good week off at the end of the last day, just common courtesy. As is my nature all the time. I could never get an acknowledgment from the driller. Okay I think, he is not a people person, maybe he just needs to get to know me. His attitude never changed. In fact, I could see he was on a power trip. He would try to get me to do things which were not part of my duties. The help usually accorded to one in my position was withheld by him. Even when my crew members were helping me he would call them away. To do nothing. They let me know. Really, I do not care. I am working twelve hours anyway. My job can not be made harder.
At times I am working atop the mast, about 130 feet in the air. A crew member was checking with me of my need for water and was given a hard time by this driller. (That crew member has since transferred of this drillers crew and in fact has reported this driller.) I will shut down the operation and come down and get water if I need to but I was prepared. I had water.
Also, there is the fact that on more than a few occasions we were so busy that time to stop and eat was not an option. Stop the operation that is. One would relieve the other and we would work short handed for a spell. The caucasian guy, me, is the only one that does not get relieved. Hehehe, whatever, I am prepared. I think that pisses him off. He is umm,
in charge . It is his job to see that his men are taken care of. He is the
boss....(where is the rolling on the floor with a deep belly laugh smilie?)...
.
Also, being in charge, you are responsible for the safety of the whole crew, the integrity of the operation, the efficiency of the operation, the profitability of the time spent. Our contractor's pay us about $25,000 a day. Time is big money. Mistakes cost time and threaten safety. Safety itself is a big money factor. So much that the insurance companies have mandated safety at all costs. Including time. A big part of safety is communication. He, and the rest of the crew can speak english. Yet, he gives instructions in only spanish. Unless he is talking to just me. He has even told me that I need to learn spanish. Whatever. It is my responsibility to ask if I do not know what is going on. Hehehe, I do not need to ask. I do know what is going on and I know what is about to go on. Not only does he give instruction in spanish, he just tells any of us to do something. We are supposed to know what is going on. I think he likes telling people what to do. The things they should already be doing if they knew the whole operation, but, that has nothing to do with prejudice. The poor guy must have always have taken it up his a$$ all his life and wants to give it out now. My honest assessment. I believe I could be from the Honduras and he would still not like me.
Lets see. There is more. There has been times that the whole crew could break for lunch. I notice that breaking for lunch is exactly what they are doing. Why was I the only one not told ? Again, I do not care. I know what is going on. Also, he has given me tasks which required more than myself which I did by myself. Just to laugh at him. I usually do not put up with such nonsense.
See, I do not work for the oilfields. They work for me.
God, Family, Country, and then your Job. This job was convenient for me.
The big quarterly company meeting....

....is when I determined that he is racist. According to the definitions provided. I could be wrong. I can not judge his heart. I can judge his brain though.
