FROM MSNBC : http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18134671/

Official: One killed, another injured in shooting at Virginia Tech campus...

its on "breaking news."

Still 1 is one two many. If its 20 its even worse.

MSNBC is often noted for its delayed news. it may be much worse then msnbc says.

Here in VA, it is in fact 22 dead, including the shooter. No word on if his death was a suicide or or killed by cops. The news implies it could have been a romantic relationship gone wrong; the first shootings at a girls floor of a dorm, the next across the central field in a classroom, in an engineering building? My oldest daughter has a friend who is in engineering there, no contact with him yet. There are close to 30 injured according to the press conference from VT. Cell phone camera footage from the campus shows cops on a sidewalk and gunshots in the background. Obviously time will help sort out the details.

describes the shooter as 'appearing to be college age' the RA tried to intervene with the shooting at the girls dorm and was killed. I heard from TV at one point that students in one classroom blocked the door to their classroom with their bodies, and the gunman was shooting through the door. The college went on lockdown after the first shooting before many students went to class, but I don't know if it was lifted or not well enforced, the second shootings were two hours later.

Unbelievable! The gunman was apparently looking for his girlfriend and was shooting anyone that he came into contact with.

If someone lines you up against a wall to shoot you, do you wait to be shot, or do you DO something? Me, I attack the SOB. In my mind, I'm dead already, get the bastard!

It's pretty easy to be a hero from the comfort of our own homes while under no duress. We have no idea at this point how much if any opportunity any one of these unfortunate victims might've had to put up a fight.

Most of the time, you don't even have enough time to think in these situations, one second, you are walking down the street, taking a sip of soda, the next second, you are shot.

Why do people feel they need to kill other people when their relationships go south?

Take a dive off a bridge, but why kill so many others? Selfish immature pr1ck b@stard. Don;'t tell me "he wasn't hugged enough as a child", or that he was last picked for the basketball team.

Terrible.

I have quite a few friends from High School who are there at Tech. I haven't been able to get in touch with any of them yet. The phone lines are jammed, the schools email system is shooting back emails, its a mess!!

I've heard all kinds of numbers, and God only knows how many of those are correct. Its a shame, a horrible horrible shame.

My thoughts and Prayers go out to everyone involved.

OK, please tell me again why we as civilians need the right to carry/own semi-automatic pistols.
I'm not even a gun control advocate but this is senseless.
Sorry, but this really pisses me off.

Actually the opposite for me. Being bi-polar, it wouldn't take any time at all for me to react with extreme prejudice. My only hope would be that I didn't take my medication that day...

Superman was bi-polar?

With all due respect F-I-E-R-O, I believe you're making a lot of assumptions regarding how much time and opportunity one might have in a life-threatening situation. It could all be over in the blink of an eye...

Out of respect for the dead, injured and families of those victims, I'll refrain from futher comments in this thread.
Hmm, well I see I just earned a - for my stance on this. I guess that's what I get for being upset about this mass murder.

I hear over in Africa they don't waste the bullets, they just break out the machetes. I'm sure this will be another event cited by gun control advocates as an example of why we should take guns away from the public, but the facts remain that if someone wants to kill someone else or a bunch of people they CAN do it without a firearm. If you take away guns you need to take away knives, axes, and any other object that is sharp or pointy, baseball bats and any other object that can be used to bludgeon someone, cars cause we KNOW they kill people, ropes, scarves, ties, shoelaces, etc, don't want anyone strangling anyone, any kind of chemical, cleaning solution, pesticides, etc that can be used to poison someone, I guess if you don't get my point you never will but guns are not a danger if they are treated responsibly just like anyother everyday object.
What would be the response if this person had driven into a crowd of people with his car and killed 30 people, would we be calling for a ban on cars?

I hate hearing about events like this happening, there are some really messed up people out there and there is no way of predicting the when and where of this type of event.

exactly. gun control is being able to hit the same spot twice.
no matter what is legal or illegal - guns are a super simple machine that anyone with minimal effort can make. setting the clock on a VCR is harder than making a zip gun. the old grease gun. the bedsping auto. simple simple stuff. and, the day I know you can't protect yourself from me - your stuff will be mine.

Oh sure, people can be killed by other people any number of different ways. However, what your argument fails to acknowledge is that firearms are by far the most efficient killing devices that can be obtained by private citizens (in the States anyway). Mentioning items such as shoelaces in this list is ridiculous. I mean seriously, how many students today would've been killed by a madman armed with a shoelace?

By the way, if I lived in the States, I'd want to be armed to the teeth (and not with a shoelace) to protect myself from anyone else who's armed to the teeth and having a bad day.

Sadly, I have to agree. I'd much rather go down fighting, but if there's a gunman 100 feet away, there's no way I can close the distance before being killed - so my best bet would be to seek cover.

My prayers go out to the victims and their families. This is just horrible.

Let's not turn this into a pro-gun/anti-gun flame fest. Start another thread for that, if you like. Please.

The answer to your point is posted further down, DRA...defining the reality of the difference between the weapons you list, and a gun..I quote it here:
QUOTE..."but if there's a gunman 100 feet away, there's no way I can close the distance before being killed "...in other words, no opportunity to be able to get close enough to your assailant to disarm or disable him..only a car equates, but there again, cars were never designed to kill, where as guns are

They're now calling this the worst mass shooting in US history. At least 32 dead according to MSNBC.com. I just don't understand it all. I guess nobody ever will since the gunman is dead, too. If he wanted to kill his girlfriend (as some of the news stories allege), why massacre all those innocent people? There was obviously some mental illness involved (even if it wasn't something usually "allowed" [as an insanity defense] by law). Depression, bi-polar, schizophrenia. I almost wish the gunman had survived so that he could be interrogated interviewed by mental health professionals. At least that might provide some insight into what was going on in his head. Maybe that would lead to a way to prevent this in the future. (Of course, then he would need to be incarcerated for the rest of his natural life, preferably with a large, psychotic homosexual named Bubba.)

I disagree. Ammonium Nitrate and diesel fuel in the proper proportions and placed in the proper location can be far more efficient.

God Rest the souls of those that were taken (including the shooter, his was apparently in far more need of rest than the others) and may He grant comfort to their grieving families and a speedy recovery to the injured.
