Me and my buddy, who is in the country with a visa to study at a state university, was denied entry into one of my favorite bars tonight with only having his valid passport on hand. Saying that it is Ohio law not to accept passports as a valid id form to enter bars. how?? pretty sure its a lot harder to obtain a passport. Just as many holigrams on it to detere counterfeits. Not to mention the fact that it has to be verified several times for authenticity before entering the country. Oh, I was pissed.

Yep. Several months ago I was in line at 7-11 and some foreign students were trying to buy some beer. They had their valid passports, but due to the liquor laws they were not valid as a form of ID. Strange, but true!

Yeah, thats weired. I've never had a problem in NY. I tend to doubt there is a law against it, probably the clerk/doorman was misinformed.

I don't know about any laws like that. As far as employment, passports are valid identification. My guess would be that since fake ID's are so easy to get, a doorman will only accept what he recognizes as legitimate. Since I'm sure he didn't want to argue the point with you, he used the "law" as an excuse.

liqour & beer laws are state laws - not federal.
Passports vary way to much to expect a simple counter person/cashier to be able to identify a fake one.
many store owners wont even except out of state ID's

By law, not so much enforced, but by law in Nova Scotia, you cannot buy Cigs or Alcohol with out a NS issued Liquor ID or drivers License.

So me, with my US Passport and TN ID, should not be allowed to purchase cigs or alcohol. However, like I said, it is not enforced. Unfortunately, I do not get carded either
