I am getting sick and tired of my very slow 1995 GMC Sonoma four cylinder. It has absolutly no power and the gas mileage at 75 MPH sucks. It gets great gas mileage around town, It gets 28 MPG around town, but it get about 10 MPG at highway speeds, it's the wierdest thing. So I am thinking about buying a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. I want the GTP because of the supercharger, that way I have the power if I want it. I was wondering if anyone on the Forum has anything bad to say about the GTP or good things to say. If you know your Fuel Mileage of your GTP can you tell me that. I read that it gets 27MPG, but thats an EPA estimate, sometimes the actual gas mileage can be higher. I think these cars look very sporty and the interior is very nice. I know alot of Fiero owners have the L67engine in their Fiero, if you know your Fuel Mileage of that you can jot that down too. I am just looking for some info before I buy. Thanks a ton. I really want to get rid of my Sonoma, it has NO power, I figure the GTP gets about the same gas mileage but has more power. Thanks in advance, I am going to work now.

I don't have a Grand Prix GTP, but I have a 2000 Buick Regal with a 3800SC. (Probably weighs more.) I get 28-29mpg open highway at 75mph. I get 29-30 mpg at 65-70mph. In town, I get between 17-23mpg (All in town driving)

Low 20's city / high 20's hwy MPG for me. At around 100K miles intake gaskets seem to go bad and allow coolant into the cylinders or worse the crankcase. On almost every S/C engine I've looked at the valve cover gaskets are leaking. Plastic coupler in the S/C can get loose and it sounds like there are marbles in the S/C at idle. Premium fuel required. Reliable car otherwise.

My daily driver is a 1996 Riviera, with a 2000 L67 from a GTP. It gets about 24 combined MPG. I drive about half and half. My mom has 2 GTs, a 97 with 175k and a 2001 with like 48k. The 97 has been a great car. Shes ready to sell it, and i think it would be a great car to make a race car out of. For a daily car, I would recommend getting a GT, because your going to end up wanting to mod the GTP, and shlt will just end up breaking, and youll spend a ton of money. Best bet is to get a GT to drive, buy an L67 for your Fiero, and send them to Wichita for a few months

We just sold our 2000 GTP with 116k miles. Average MPG was about 23 but on the highway it would get 30+ at 70-75 MPH. Amazing.
At around 100k I had to replace both axles (CVs bad) and wheel bearings (ABS light), SC coupler (rattle), front exhaust manifold (cracked and common), passengers side HVAC actuator and valve cover gaskets.
However, it still ran great and was rattle free. We loved it.

I love mine, It has 170k of ABUSED daily driving, stock trans/motor. I got an urge to mod it a bit, then just built a fiero with a L67, and left the gtp stock.
My mileage is fairly horrid, 24 on a good day. You can average close to 30 without the blower and the extra compression. Try to stay away from 97's, inferior PCM's, usually inferior paint, mine has crazy rust problems. I love my cloth seats, which is fairly rare for any non 97 gtp.
I really cant emphasize the reliability this car has given me. All i have done was put a fuel pump and water pump in it, I still have stock exhaust, wheel bearings, springs, strut mounts, ect. I even totaled it by running into a BIG mailbox last winter in a ice storm, and fixed it for $70 + paint, and got a $3000 check from the insurance company. Its a really easy car to work on if you need to. The power is GREAT, after 4 years now, I still never hit the gas and ask for more. Its not technically a fast car, but it sure does feel fast when your just driving it, plenty fast enough for what it is.
The reason my transmission is still in the car, its because I put a shift kit in at about 60k miles, and its really saved the thing to the point that it shifts better than my fiero.
edit for picture.

Whats wrong with the 97 GTP's. I am looking at one near me that is in great condition and the paint is nice, there is no rust on it. The only part is that it has 136,000 miles on it. I am sure it can go for another 750,000 miles. If I baby it. I usually don't beat the crap out of my cars, which isn't normal for a teenager. The dealership wants $2300 for it, I am thinking about asking $2000 for it. It's Forest Green, it has power sunroof, she told me that the person that owned it was elderly and was the original owner, so I am thinking it going to be in pretty good shape, The dealer told me the interior is in very good shape and very clean, non smoker too, which is good for me because I don't smoke and I don't like cleaning the ash out of the car just because you can never get all that out of a car. I will know more when I test drive it tommorrow.

Today I went and looked at that 1997 GTP. It runs very rough and the HUD unit doesn't work. It has those Borla Tumper mufflers on it, you know those 6 inch outlet mufflers. And it wasn't getting any boost from the supercharger, well, it would get boost at 4000 RPM. Now matter what I pointed otu want was wrong with the car, the dealer just kept saying " it runs great" or "runs just like new". I told him the car was a piece of junk and needs to get it crushed, I did tell him I would give him $200 for it. I have found another one, it's a 2002 Black GTP, it is more what I am looking for. It has leather seats, that are heated. Has the HUD. It used to be a company car, now the guy that owns the company is selling it. He is delivering it tommorrow for me to look at and drive. It has 122000 miles on it and it is in excellent condition. He is asking $5250 for it.

Had a 97 GTP, and around 80k the tranny went. Really, never beat on it, mostly highway driving. But, that car did have the torque. Those engines are amazing, could pull a tank from a tarpit if it had to. I got around 17mpg here, but we have a lot of hills, and could do 30 on the highway. Still looking back I loved that car and everyone else did also. Just drove great, and did well at high speed. Got like four speeding tickets in it.
we just bought a 97 gtp for my daughter and it is a pretty nice car, it has 72,000 miles and runs great. my daughter loves it.
That's pretty low miles for that year. It must run really good. The 97 GTP I went and looked at was owned by a teenager. I say that because of the exhaust and the wanna be air intake. The exhaust was almost dragging on the ground, which in Maine if it is almost dragging on the ground it will eventually get ripped off by some large pothole or a large random bump in the road. And the air intake was a PVC pipe with a reuseable cone filter at the end of it. But I probably wouldn't have bought that one because it's two door, my insurance would be crazy. But I am looking at the 2002 GTP today, and I will more that likely buy it. I drove my friend 2001 GTP to work today, she let me drive it to see how it went for me going to work. My route to work is very bumpy. By driving hers I was hooked, that freakin' car is very potent. You can floor it and it will get up and go and put you in your seat. I showed my neighbors a picture of the car I am looking at and they told me that it was a granny car, I laughed at them and said yea right, it could smoke his 1994 Mazda Protege all day long.

97's were rigged due to the fact that the GTP's were classified as non supercharged, and got the same rate as a gt.
My gtp has typical HUD problems, and some other small "first model year" type problems. I wouldnt NOT buy one if it everything checks out, but It rarely will after being 10 years old now.

When I take my cars to get work done like tires or alignment or somthing, I pull off the BBV acutator, so it will only make 2-3psi of boost. Prevents joy riding and stuff.

I met with the guy that is selling the 2002 GTP, he let me drive it around for an hour. I am going to buy it. The interior is almost perfect, it has no rips in the leather seat, the drivers side seat has just the normal wear on it. The back seats have never been sat in. Everyting works excellent. He is getting it detailed tommorrow for me. The interior was very clean, it just have some sand on the carpet, so he is going to get it detailed again, he just got it detailed 3 days ago. He has kept the car very clean, the engine compartment has no grease on it, it looks new. The car is near new and runs just like it. I can't wait to have it. I am just witing for the bank to ok my loan. I will post some pictures on here when I get it.
I've owned a GTP for about 2 1/2 years now. Bought it with a spun rod bearing, and put an engine in from an 00 GTP. Ive probably put 30k miles on it, and never had any major problems. The absolute worst part about these cars is the interior. The door panels fall apart, the cupholder mechanism breaks, the stock cd players are junk, the power window switches go bad, and the power window motors always end up dying. Its a great car for dependability, as the drivetrain is very stout. Im trying to sell mine now, as I dont need it, and cant wait to get rid of the thing. If it were a RWD car with a manual tranny, I would like it a lot more. The thing always drinks a lot of gas on the highway too,as I usually get around 24-25 mpg and I almost never get on it. I personally would never buy another one again, as I would rather have an L67powered Fiero, which I am working on. If you are looking for something dependable, then it would be a good car for you. They have a lot more power than a Sonoma does, haha.
