A quick google of it just shows that it's a wheel with multiple parts that require inspection more frequently than regular rims. =\

In modular wheel construction, two aluminum rim halves are mated to a forged wheel center section to create a strong, lightweight wheel.

I remember hearing about wheels like that on old tractors, they kind of dangerous though apparantly. If the tire wasn't completely deflated before you tried to service it the outer half could blow off and kill you

You mean split rims? I haven't worked on one in a long time....at least a year.

For what it is worth, forged 2-piece and 3-piece BBS rims have been around for years and years. Stronger and lighter than cast aluminum counterparts.

They are also $$$$$$$.

I just picked up a set of 17x7.5" Volvo factory option rims for my 2000 Volvo Cross Country. They have Volvo part numbers on them but they are 2-piece forged rims made by BBS(actually says BBS right on the front of the rims). MSRP on one rim: ~$600 per rim

Usually there just the rim and center as separate parts and bolted together. Some companies like American Racing make 1 piece wheels that appear to be 2 piece with rivet heads around the rim edge.

Haven't heard the word "split rim" in ages. When I was a kid we had a neighbor mechanic that lost his eye due to a split rim coming apart. Put a hell of a gash across his face too. Gives me the chills thinking about it.

A modular wheel comes in three peices: the outer rim, the center, & the inner rim. They allow you to pick & choose the rim width, offset, & bolt pattern & allow you change any of the above with just the purchase of a single peice for each wheel. Or even change the offset by just swapping the inner & outer rims (if they're different widths).
One thing to watch out for when buying used with the tires on: some manufacturers weld the peices together around the inside to make them solid & air-tight.

A tire store employee out here was killed by a split rim explosion a few months ago. Wasn't using a cage.

I had a ring blow off of a split rim in a cage before. Holy crap! It sounded like a bomb going off, and I nearly shat in me britches. Left a nice imprint of the ring inside the cage also.
