I can see the aerospace companies with CNC routers and laser micrometers, and there you are...
Well I cut up the CAD model into machinable chucks (Meaning it would fit on the mill) it turned out that we would have needed about 40 pieces at about 2 hours of machining a piece. So we went with the profile every foot and hand hotwiring, and sculpting. It is very very close to the cad model. We will get it. I machined the first 6 inches of the nose.....so it had some CNC machining. Of course after that I said Whoa, this is going to take forever.
Here are some more.
I'm the fatty in the navy shirt.

That looks awesome, I hope you guys wear masks when pics arent taken!
I learned the hard way when we were filling and smoothing that buck. Body filler has the same poly-styren make up as this gel coat and resin. Anyway I woke up yesterday feeling like I drank a bottle of scotch. I had a splitting head ache. Anyway, masks on and we have a mold I will be prepping pics here.

Here is the mold, we used a couple of layers random chop strand, and then some very heavy woven cloth to fill in the last few layers. Tomorrow we pop that baby off.

Did the Dolphin you used for the mold survive? really, it does look like a dolphin to me...and that can only be GOOD!! Not aerodynamic..aquadynamic!! That thing rocks!! Well done, and good luck...hope you WIN!! Nick PS..no 'ferrari-like ' wheel spinner discs?

We are laying up carbon fiber disks this week. So those wheels will be all black. Here is the graphics/paint layout (only clearcoat on the carbon, the bottom piece is fiberglass, that is getting painted. No dolphins though.
What will you do with it when you have won ? I bet that would fetch a MOUNTAIN of cash on eBay It is truly a work of Art, and I am in awe of the skills needed to make this dream racer come true!! I hope you DO win!! Nick

Hmmm that could be a way to recoup the thousands of dollars spent on this thing. Although we plan on racing again next year. We might even build another frame and enter two cars since we have molds now we can pop as many as we want. Anyway the car has a nice open piece of real estate by a bay of windows in the lobby for Research and development. It looks like a show room.

How creative can you get with the rules? They always tell us engineers to think outside the box. So what you do is build a sort of large A-frame structure and set it up about 50' in front of the starting point. A cable runs from the front of the car, to a pulley set-up, up to the top of the A-frame where it attaches to a large weight. When the race starts, the weight is dropped, pulling the front of the car along. The weight lands on a platform about 6' above the ground (so the car can drive under it) and the cable detaches from the car. Hey, it's using "no other propulsion than gravity". Pretty sure it wouldn't be allowed for some reason.

I just found this thread and want to say it is great. I love what you guys are doing with that. When my son was in scouts I ran the pinewood derby every year and was amazed at what the fathers would do to gain a slight advantage. From magnets in the nose, (starting gate was a metal rod that flipped forward) to moving weights, (started weight in rear and by finish line it was over front axle.) Looks like ya got a nice looking car there and I hope it all works out for you.

Maybe.......when you had a fully automated assembly line made of 80/20 that was disassembled and put in storage it makes frame building easy. I was told we have over $1000 in frame pieces and hardware. It is being put to good use...I wonder what else we can build out of the stuff.....it is like an Erector set for adults.
