good luck and don't over-oil those bearings. Just enough and not too much

We put our propritary reel lube in the bearings called Hot Sauce it is red in color and is some of the best lubricant you can buy for anything. The bearing seals are gone to reduce any drag on them.
I've been lurking in this thread since the beginning. Never posted because I don't know the first thing about it, but I can tell you that I am IMPRESSED with what you ended up with. Very nice, VERY cool.
Here's hoping you win. The only question is where is the Pennock's logo?
Just kidding!

I've been watching this thread with a lot of interest. I know what you're capable of doing at the plant and in your department and was just satisfied to sit back and enjoy the show. I was going to try to surprise you and show up at the race tomorrow but alas, that's not going to work out. I wish I could be there. Best of luck to you and the rest of the team, hope you do well. Kick their butts.

yeah!! Get the driver to eat tons of baked beans 4 hours before Blow yourselves into the lead Just thinking..after the race, you could fit pedals, or a small 50cc motor to drive the rear wheel..that would rock!! hahaha!!! I still reckon that would fetch a mountain of money on eBay

On a straight downhill gravity race, the fastest car is the fastest car. A schedule change and a computer glitch sound like somebody fixed the race. But hey, I'm a sceptic.
You made an excellent car and I am sorry you got ripped.
OK here is how this went down. The rules and procedures stated from day one that they would have everyone go down the hill and they would time your first run. Then pair you with a car of a similar time for your second round. From there they would braket you down to a final race. Our driver was riding the brake all the way down to be paired with a slower vehicle for the next few rounds. He would open it up for the last race because he had plenty left. Our slow time was still the 2nd fastest of the day. Then they decided after the first round that things were going to slow so they would do another timed run and take the average of the two times. So our first recorded time was not wide open. When we went down the second time we insisted that we be paired up with the other top car which was from Tulsa University's engineering school. We smoked that car, our driver ran wide open. So because we played some strategy on the timing run it killed us later. So we ended up with third place and Tulsa Universitiy came in 1st, which we clearly smoked but they ran it all off of an average time, not who crossed first, even though it was so obvious our car was the fastest. No problems there for the first time doing a derby with this many cars they did a great job.
We were good sports, it's for charity. We did win 1st prize for showmanship So I guess next year we will just have to do some tweaks and smoke em even more. We are also looking for a more competitive race to really open this car up on. We think with a good hill and some brake upgrades this thing could hit 50-60 easy. Pics to come tomorrow I am exhausted.

Man, I'm sorry. That sucks that they would change to rules in the middle of the game. If its any consolation, my kids didn't even hesitate when it came time to vote for their favorite car. You had the top car hands down, no matter what the rule changes made of it...

Thanks man, it's cool we know everyone was very impressed with our car. Plus this is their first year they were saying a lot, please bear with us we are figuring this out since we have never done this before. So we will just claim our title next year. Now I need to edit some pics to fit on here.
I must say from your description that you kind of out thought yourself. Trying to use the brake to position yourself was likely the root of your undoing, however, next year I'm sure you'll do better. Still a nice car and a good job well done on the prep work.

Hey we are still winners in our book this was our criteria for building. We met all of them with flying colors.
1. Blow the doors off everyone. We did that, she was FAST. 2. Make something high tech and tweakable for many years of racing. Check mark there, we figured we raised the bar a bit so we are already making plans to tweak the car to make it faster so we can claim our first place next year for sure. 3. Build a car that no one would expect a fishing reel company would or could make. People were in awe of the car, we were even asked what kind of airplanes we made......um fishing reels man, Zebco makes fishing reels.

If I may add, the losers here are the kids who built their soapboxes by themselves w/o the aid or very little assistant from an adult. I know there was "heats" where the slowest speeds raced, but IMO I think it should be "kids" only.
As for the adults or serious builders, I think there should have been a different race all together and maybe on a different day.

Actually, I'm pretty sure there were separate youth and adult classes.

Here we are half way down the course ahead of the winning car.
There are now plans to tweak this car, and since we have enough carbon fiber to make another body out of our existing molds we are planning a second car made from welded bike frame tube. We estimate the frame will weigh 8 pounds. The steering and suspension will also be all machined billet aluminum and possibly some titanium. So we will have two cars next year. Zebco 1 tweaked and made faster, and Zebco 2 new and improved with the same body as Zebco 1. We were also contacted by the car in the picture. They were engineering students from Tulsa University. They want us to help them build a body for the car they raced. Their car is also going to be their super milelage car. We might even just pull them a body from our mold since it would need very little tweaking to fit it to their chassis. The only stipulation would be if they race us they leave the body at home. So good things came from the race we are very pleased, and we get to build another that is even better.

I could be wrong...but here I go anyway!! I would have thought the rear wheel should have had the discs fitted too, maybe MORE than the front ones. Why? because it was revolving in a confined area, moving restricted air around inside the body. Therefore more resistance generated, BECAUSE the air was not so easily displaced Might make you even faster! Nick

That is a good thought...the reason the rear does not have covers is simple, we ran out of time. the front disks were finally dry about an hour before it had to be in Sand Springs for check in. Since the rear wheel was not seen as much we figured we could get away with out it. It will be remedied for next year. I think Zebco 2 will have a red stripe on it I think that would look sharp.
