Well down the street from me a 1978 Sterling kit car appeared and the uniqueness of it has me contemplating making a offer on it. The guy has no idea what it is, he just called it a 1978 kit car and he wants $2700 for it. Its appears to have not been on the road for many years. Has a ford V6 in it that is stuck. Body is clean and not bad, someone did some fiberglass work to it since its been off the road. The front end has been changed a little and opened up, kinda looks like one of the cars in the old speed racer cartoon. Also have 91-96 corvette tail lights custom molded into the rear. Looks to be a very solid car, fiberglass is very thick, so it must be heavy. I have seen quite a few kit cars and they glassed this one to last, at least 1/4in thick in places and some thicker. Most of the body panels fit nicely. The opening top has some sagging in the front but overall nice, sided windows need to be redesigned because they fit like crap and do not seal. Has a auto tranny with a ratchet shifter, new style racing bucket seats with 5pt harnesses, VDO gauges, etc...
So whats your guys opinions on them. I have no need for another project as I have too many as it is, but if I can get it dirt cheap, might be something fun to play with, or a new lawn decoration like the rest of my projects.
Looks very much like the one in the pic, but different side scoops, and the opening in the front is much bigger.

I'd really love to have it, as they are really rare I'd say. Only real one I have ever seen. But I just don't think its feasible for me to buy another project and that would wipe out what little cash I have right now. Now if I can find someone to buy my 92 firebird I will go offer him cash for it. I really like unique cars and thats why I drive a fiero, so this one would be awsome to have, very dated though and lots I would have to change, especially being powered by a ford, thats no good.

Based on the pics $2700 is a STEAL. The new kits go for $9K (!) and you still have to provide a donor. I'd say go for it.
The only bad things I've heard about them are the typical complaints about most VW based kitcars, mainly the weight is not distributed well and they get a little squirley at high speeds because there's not enough weight at the front end.

I never was into them very much. Both of the others set way too high....look like off roaders. One your looking at sets much better. Im not a fan of window louvers, or the hood louvers. If it runs good, sounds like a good buy though. Its a start you can play with. There are some cool performance stuff available off the shelf for Ford V6s too.

If you're referring the the louvers on the blue one, that's not the one he's looking at, just one I found on the net as an example.

They make a kit to adapt the ford 2.3 (Think Pinto and Mustang II) to VW transaxles. Then again, he mentioned an auto trans, so I'm not sure...

Built and owned a number of VW kit cars. (avenger / valkarie / kelmark & sterling) The sterling was equal to the kelmark in body thickness but had a wow to it that no other vehicle had. The top was a pain in the a and the lack of ac was really a problem as the windows only opened a couple of inches. Built vw engine moved it along nicely. I think there is a active club / manufacture in the Pittsburg PA area for support and parts. I sold mine after I repalced the winshield for the second time. "Lambo glass" was used in the year model I had and it was BIG BUCKS. I think I've seen a fiero based Sterling, might be worth looking into.

Its still a junky VW chassis, designed sometime in the 30s.
I'll have to dig up one of the tube chassis for one my dad's old Cimbrias, I liked those a lot better than the Sterlings. Besides, all his were powered by Corvair engines. One was supposed to have a GNX powerplant, but he never finished it

Never liked them much myself but at that price it looks like a good buy. I remember putting a t-top in one 24 years ago. We made it from scratch. They are sold as the Purvis Eureka here, and of course the original Nova in England. We can still buy them new as well. Why anyone would want to, I do not know.

I like them, but haven't found one cheap enough yet. I would ditch everything VW and do a tube chassis with significantly more power, better brakes and good AC.

He said in the original post it was set up with a Ford V6/ trans. Im guessing stuck means that its locked up. But already set up for it would be a few hour job to replace it.
