About 15 years ago, I collected Star Trek Model Kits. I got them from all over the world and some were pretty rare. Some of the less rare ones I built, others I left unopened in the box. Priorities and interests changed over the years, so I stored the kits I hadn't built yet in our basement.

A few weeks ago, my wife suddenly got the urge to clean our basement. Whenever she gets urges like that, I let her go ahead as long as she doesn't ask me to help (because I think the basement is fine the way it is). Today, she was done and all that was left to do was move a few boxes from the basement to the attic instead. So I climb up the attic and she hands me the boxes. With every box I ask her what's in it so I can properly store it. At one point she hands me a small box and I ask her what's in it. She says "Your Star Trek kits". I look at her in disbelief, since the box wasn't even large enough to hold one of my Star Trek kits. I open the box and to my dismay I see several small plastic bags with the kit parts in it. She then continues to tell me that she took everything out of the boxes and threw the boxes away so they wouldn't take up so much space...

Seriously, al these boxes together took less space than perhaps 1% of her shoe boxes...

Women... Can't live with them, can't keep their hands of your stuff.

I must have it good. My wife and I wouldn't dare touch each others stuff, no matter what.

I do the housework, almost soley. I either leave all of her things exactly where they are (no matter how disorganized it is) or I make neat piles for her to deal with whenever she feels like it.

Reminds me of parents tossing $30k in old baseball cards from the attic, didn't happen to me but has happened to others.

Women,
You can’t live with them,
You can’t live without them,
And you will never understand them.

I am still trying to fathom the moving them from the basement to the attic part. Sounds like a waste of effort. Just relocating stuff collecting dust in one spot to another place to collect dust.

OMG.

Mine threw away ALL of my cabling that I had set back, every computer I had taken apart I had stored every single wire, I had a few boxes each with different types, not counting my spools of Cat 5, and connectors.

I went to get a certain cable for a guy, and couldn't find any of it, asked her if she had seen the stuff, and she proudly proclaimed she had "cleaned" my work area. . There was stuff in there from the 80's. That was like $$ in the bank, what I already had I didn't have to order, or wait for.

Not as bad as yours, probably not near as costly either.

What drives me NUTS is when they "clean up" by putting your electronic gizmoze in one spot, and their chargers/wires/cables/accessories in 957 other spots! ARGHHHH!!!!!

(of course, perhaps I shouldn't leave my junk out, but when you are trying to back up data, you need some of the junk out there)

My son helps me to stay neat. if I leave it out, he will help put it away...PERMANENTLY!

I can just imagine Cliff jumping up and down shouting "Henryetta*! You have thrownen aways my special edition volcan ear carrying case! Aich! Look at how you have combinded all the saucer sections and phlanges!! To the basement vit you!!!"

Then I imagine him trudging to the bathroom with the bags and some model cement... and in there, he builds ONE freakish ship out of all the bags of parts...gets high off the fumes, and creates a frightening new 'theme' for the forum with lots of trippy colors...

The "Starship Abomination" - kludged together from the parts of a half dozen federation ships, romulin freighers, a ferengi destroyer, and the buffer panel off a bird of prey. Even The Borg would be scared of THAT one...

*(I don't know what her real name is, but Henryetta seems to fit. and now, at least one time in his life, He'll look at her and think of the name Henryetta.)

When women say they want to clean out the garage, basement, closet, etc. it is code for I want to get rid of your stuff. Never let the "cleaning" of any area go unsupervised.

If its going to get cleaned out, she usually leaves it in a pile on the floor that I am required to go thru afterwards.

So far as I know, my wife hasn't thrown out anything of mine without asking me first. But she does like to move stuff. I have resigned myself to never knowing where a single thing is in my own house.

Cliff,
I feel your pain. It was a situation similar to yours that I learned a few lessons about dealing with and training women. Yes, I said training. They have to be taught what is important to you just as you had to learn what was important to her. Now, I have no doubt that you received your training first and learned it well or you would not be able to continue to do the things you do as you do and when you do, if you were not properly trained. Hopefully the training won't be as painful as the loss just experienced. Good luck in what ever you decide to do just please don't surrender.

At least it doesn't sound like it was a malicious act!

I know a guy (my grandfather) whose wife took all the paper covers off (and threw out) his books in the library because they looked better without them. Yes, many first additions, some signed,,,,,,,,,,,, on the covers!

Waxing teak furniture.

Scrubbing antique tables with a scratch pad.

Wooden trays in the dishwasher.

Throwing out your favorite work cloths. I guess she would rather me ruin good cloths but look styling doing it.

But what would we do without them? heh, no pictures please..........................

Let it go, thank her and tell her how much you love her.
Then go find a new Fiero and tell her how much an unopened model is worth

I have 2 places in the house that are mine, and mine alone.

The garage... I allow her to walk through there on her way to somewhere else...

The "Man Cave", (My Office / Den)..she may never enter there unless explicitly invited to.

The rest of the house is her's to do with as she pleases....and she does

Sheit sheit sheit!!!

Why, man, why, did you let her touch anything after mentioning "cleaning"? "Cleaning" is woman-speak for "making little piles of your stuff, then stacking the piles on top of each other, then finally hiding the piles, so I have more room for my stuff!".

Here's something she'll understand - tell her how much MONEY she just threw away by tossing all those boxes.
Show her how much some of those collectibles go for.

And bring it up whenever she asks for money to buy something. She can use some of the money she threw out to save space.

the one and only time my wife threw some of my stuff away I went in the bedroom and packed up all her underware in a big bag and threw it away!
this worked well and she got the point!
she was mad for about a week but it was a nice week spent in my shop!
since then she just moves things so I cant find them but she does not throw them away.
if I want to keep her out of things I put them in my shop. she would not dare go in there, MANCAVE!
HA HA!
good luck Cliff,
try to find out how much they were worth and post it on the fridge for a few days.

We have a counter separating our kitchen and dining room. When I get in at night, I empty my change, moneyclip, pocket knife, etc., on the counter where I gather it up the next morning. It almost NEVER stays where I put it. I may get in at 9:00pm and leave the house at 7:00 am the next morning, but she just can't stand to leave it there, unmoved, for those 10 hours most of the time while we're asleep. OTOH, she has a box on the same counter that she got for her Taekwando that is still unopened (ad slicks they send for her to use in advertising). The post date on the UPS label is 4/18/08. It has not moved from that counter since then. But my change can't spend the night. Go figger.

It's hard havin' a mancave when ya live in an apartment. That's my primary motivation for finding a decent house. "Does it have a cave?"

Then, once we move in, one of the first things I gotta do is install the retinal scan and penis detector. If no external genitalia is detected, THOU SHALT NOT ENTER THE MANCAVE!

I have a small collection of comics, mostly from the mid 1980's but also some from the 60's and 70's as well. Most of them bagged and on on acid free boards. I have then in boxes with a sign that says DO NOT EVER FOR ANY REASON DISCARD. They have survived a marriage and two fiances'. I've found over the years that typically women don't value things the way guys do. Not a single (straight) guy I know would discard comics, action figures, baseball cards, matchbox cars, etc., because basically we are all value those childhood memories. Women want to grow up. They start playing mommie when we are playing with our toys. They don't value childhood the way I think men do. Just my opinion, but the best time in a man's life is usually when he's still a kid.

Cliff - I am truly saddened by your loss.

Saddened and I would also be maddened if it were mine. My woman is always nagging about my stuff but it gives me a chance to tell her it is off limits. Once, one of my favorite raggedy shirts came up missing. She said it disappeared. I told her that she is not the only magician, .

You guys are a bunch of whiners aren't ya. We move the stuff because we don't like to see the clutter. The stuff currently on our coffee table will not be there when we move into our house. This tiny apt. doesn't have any space to put anything.

Jane
BTW: Sorry Cliff. I would never have done that. I know what they're worth.

Whiners huh? Yeah right. The woman decorative CRAP covers most of the usable space on walls, counters and sometimes the floor. Between the pretty plates, plants, weird stuff in the most god awful inappropriate places, it's amazing OSHA has been given authorization and authority to come in and fine the guilty party. Don't like clutter my butt, it's all in your perspective of what clutter is.

Ron

Delusional, or lying ?
The more room one has, the more room for clutter one has, .
I think George Carlin said it best. In his skit "More Stuff".

If you all don't like clutter, get all those dang longenbuggerhead baskets off the freakin walls and out of the corners. Hang some reall man's stuff up there, like pictures of fighter jets and Thermonuclear Explosions, or at LEAST some picturs of cars with girls in bikinis (or less).

Women don't like clutter. What a joke. I'm coming down there to follow you around with a camera................................
