Any from or familiar with the area, have any info on the road from Newport TN to Weaverville NC (west US 25 / 70). I know it is 52 miles, but how is it to travel particularly at night. It looks like it jags around a lot crossing the mountain. What kind of speed can you safely make through there. I would normally take 40 from Knoxville to Ashville and cut up, but with I40 closed, I do not want to take the 125 mile detour up I81 to I26 and back down. This route will save me about 70 miles.
Thanks, Gene

Not a bad road at all... But if it's icy you're gonna want to stay under 50 mph just in case... It's a bit curvy and if memory serves lots of long hills. Good luck!!
A fried of mine just went that way going to Knoxville, and she said its not a bad road. She said it was a lot faster than going the other detour. She said the speed limit is 55 and the road isn't too curvy.

Thanks for the information. I will be going through there about 5:00 next Friday. of course the long range forecast is calling for snow. I will play it by ear.
