In order to pass a safety inspection in ontario does a car need a catalytic converter? ex a fiero that is emissions exempt and has a stright pipe to the muffler.

If it needs emissions certification you need the Cat. If not, no worries.

You just have to remember that a safety check checks your exhaust for leaks, not emissions compliance.

Good luck

I had to have a Catalytic Converter installed to pass Ontario safety. 1987 and older vehicles are exempt from Ontario's drive clean testing.

Thats what im worried about. i know the car is emissions exempt but i dont know if a straight pipe instead of a cat will cause a fail. what are the differences between the 4 and 6 cyl cats?

No difference IIRC..........and, no a straight pipe wont cause a fail. the only time it MIGHT be an issue is if you get pulled over for an inspection by ministry of the environment or OPP who wants to be a prick....and even then, like you said, its exempt and you win in court and get damages out of the deal

Also, its been a couple of years for me--but IIRC that u-pull down by bell river in your area does (did?) inspections without being "overly critical" about what they find.
