I want to install & play some XP games that won't play in Windows 7.
Will the XP mode in Windows 7 work for this?
Where IS the XP mode in Windows 7?

Another option I have is a secondary drive I have in my computer that has nothing on it. I guess I could install XP on it.
But that would have to be a dual-boot system, correct?

I thought the older you got the smarter you got.......believe it or not I used to KNOW this stuff.

Right-click the game icon
"run in compatability mode"

the wizard will open and its pretty self-explanatory from there.

If those XP games require Direct3D (DirectX) then I'm pretty sure running them in XP won't work. XP mode basically is a virtual machine running in Windows 7 but it doesn't support virtualization of you video card. I think VirtualBox is the only virtual machine that can (although I've never got it to work).

Your best bet would indeed be to install XP on a spare drive and boot from that whenever you want to play those games.

But what games are that? I've never heard of a game that runs in XP but not in Windows 7.

Like M.E.M. said, Compatibility mode should work. You'll just have to find the installer file on the disc, right click that and play with the compatibility mode settings.

For some games, even if you own the game, it's easier to DL a cracked version, and get THAT to play, because sometimes, its the copy protection which prevents the game from playing because it's looking for a little file somewhere and it's not there... Know what I mean?
Soul Reaver was like that...

Thats exactly the issue I am having running Starcraft on my netbook....since XP mode is virtual, very shortly after starting the actual machine takes over control of the display settings.

Worked like a charm!
Just replace the .exe file, and presto!

And just for the record:

I DO own the game.
