I had never seen this medical determination before.

******************************************

On June 25, 2007, police entered Benoit's home on a "welfare check" after several missed appointments, leading to concerns. The officers discovered the bodies of Benoit, his wife Nancy, and their 7-year-old son Daniel at around 2:30 p.m. EDT. Upon investigating, no additional suspects were sought by authorities. It was determined that Benoit had committed the murders.

Over a three day period, Benoit had killed his wife and son before he hanged himself. His wife was bound before the killing. Benoit's son was drugged and likely unconscious before Benoit strangled him. Benoit then committed suicide with a weight machine.

Toxicology reports released on July 17, 2007 revealed that at their time of death, Nancy had three different drugs in her system: Xanax, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone, all of which were found at the therapeutic rather than toxic levels. Daniel was found to have Xanax in his system, which led the chief medical examiner to believe that he was sedated before he was murdered. Benoit was found to have Xanax, hydrocodone, and an elevated level of testosterone, caused by a synthetic form of the hormone, in his system. The chief medical examiner attributed the testosterone level to Benoit possibly being treated for a deficiency caused by previous steroid abuse or testicular insufficiency. There was no indication that anything in Benoit's body contributed to his violent behavior that led to the murder-suicide, concluding that there was no "roid-rage" involved. Prior to the murder-suicide, Benoit had been given illegal steroids not in compliance with WWE's Talent Wellness Program in February 2006. Benoit received nandrolone and anastrozole. During the investigation into steroid abuse, it was revealed that other wrestlers had also been given steroids.

After the double-murder suicide, former wrestler Christopher Nowinski contacted Michael Benoit, father of Chris Benoit, suggesting that years of trauma to his son's brain may have led to his actions. Tests were conducted on Benoit's brain by Julian Bailes, the head of neurosurgery at West Virginia University, and results showed that "Benoit's brain was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient. "He was reported to have had an advanced form of dementia, similar to the brains of four retired NFL players who had suffered multiple concussions, sank into depression, and harmed themselves or others.

Bennet Omalu, MD, MPH, a leading forensic neuropathologist, the Chief Medical Examiner of San Joaquin County, CA, and founding member of the Sports Legacy Institute also examined Chris Benoit’s brain as part of the Sports Legacy Project who had also examined the brains of Mike Webster, Terry Long, Andre Waters, and Justin Strzelczyk all of whom were professional football players, died by the age of fifty, and displayed similar psychological and behavioral profiles. Their brains showed evidence of CTE and two of the players - Long, and Waters - committed suicide.

Mike Webster died of a heart attack, but suffered from dementia, depression, and exhibited erratic behavior after retiring from football. When Justin Strzelczyk died at the age of 36, he had been telling relatives he was hearing voices from “the evil ones” and then led police on a 40 mile high-speed chase through central New York at speeds up to 100 mph on the wrong side of the highway, which resulted in an explosive crash and his death

Bailes and his colleagues concluded that Benoits repeated concussions caused a type of brain damage called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy which can lead to dementia, and can contribute to severe behavioral problems. Benoit's father suggests that brain damage may have been the leading cause of the crime. He also confirmed that his son was quietly cremated, but what was done with the ashes is not public knowledge.

Very sad.
I wonder if lifelong boxers eventually succumb to this, too?

I saw a portion of a report Dr. Sanja Gupta had on about concussions in sports and he was mentioning that a lot of the evidence now shows that a big factor in the cause of dementia / brain related disorders and concussions is the time span between concussions. People that suffer a second concussion before the first one has a chance to heal correctly have a much higher risk of doing permanent damage.
Kind of makes sense as a lot of boxers or fighters usually have a longer span for recovery than do players of heavy contact sports like Football, Hockey, Wrestling entertainment.

I would have to say the drugs in their systems played some part in what happened, even if it is a small percentage. I would have to wonder if these folk were not on any drug at all, would this have happened?

It is a little scary.

A lot of people out there have had their head scrambled. We are darn resilient little machines but when we malfunction people get dead. Not bueno.

I have had extreme brain trauma myself. Three major impacts and have some damage. The last one left me with seizures and reduced math skills.
I can totally live with this as I am pretty darn happy to have lived at all but I never want something like this to happen. I hope they figure out exactly what the problem is so it can be identified.

B.S....I have lost count of the times I've used my head as a landing gear off various animals, or knocked myself out walking into things in dark hangers, or been knocked down for <none of your business > or taking out a few mirrors and windshields with the forehead.......

And I am still perfectly normal.

Almost everyone (hypochondriacs excepted) consider themselves the epitome of nomalcy, and consider almost everyone else abnormal in comparison. There is no 'standard' against which to judge anyone we meet, except that which we know best--ourselves.

I'm ok-----------the rest of ya could use some counseling.

That is a very debatable statement. I know I am normal, but you I’m not so sure about.

And come to think of it I’m not sure about the rest of you, or me.

From what i know about bodybuilding it can become a sickness much like anorexia and like an anorexic trying to lose weight a bodybuilder is always trying to gain weight. Weight lifting, weights training and body building are 3 separate things entirely but it is the body builder that cheats so to speak or will do anything to gain weight.

If you look at Sean Connery he came 3rd in Mr olympia in the 1953 competition and Arnold Schwarzenegger: Mr. Olympia – 1970–1975
the use of steroids changed the competition in the 70's it is now 40 years later and there is so much more on offer, growth hormones antibiotics, steriods, protein powder even pregnant womens urine. Body builders will do anything to become even bigger. Greg Valentino the worlds biggest biceps had his arm explode
Pro Wrestlers are required to be big well the bigger the better to score a job with Vince.

Bit of trivia for you:
You just need big cans to work with me hehe I used to operate the IWA wrestling website for years (IWA is on Foxtel) and lived with the owner Mark Mercedes who has been with WCW ACW, WWW, CWC, FWA, CWA Mega Pro Japan too name a few and toured with wrestleriot 94 i own and run CJW wrestling (google if 18+) (it is for sale)
