"Anyone who clings to the historically untrue--and thoroughly immoral--doctrine that 'violence never solves anything' I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The Ghost of Hitler could referee, and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk, and the Passenger Pigeon. Violence, naked force, has settled more disputes in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms."
"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams, August 1, 1776.

a small aside, as a passionate reader and coverter of books I consider it a pity to see so many interesting quotes from people who don't read. Life isn't about how fast you can Google a quote to suit your message but how much you absorb from the deliberate study of books.
As Kipling said, "He wrapped himself in quotations -- as a beggar would enfold himself in the purple of Emperors."

That's nice and in my opinion it's an unreasonable way of judgement of opinion based solely on what you think you know. Go study your books and stop acting like the people that post =interesting= quotes don't read, based on quotes that you draw a conclusion of a person.

Agree.
This is where you just lost all credibility. You'll notice no one else has touched it and it has been posted for nearly two weeks!
No point in reading anymore of your post. unless of course you want to quote more Bonanparte. Read him much?

It doesn't mean anything that your statement wasn't replied to, it also doesn't make it correct either.
No argument needed, this is simply a thread about quotes. Any quotes. Famous quotes or non famous quotes.
Sure probably almost everyone in here Googled quotes but that doesn't make them a non reader. It is because you think to quote must come from a book that they read, and everyone in here doesn't read, like you said.
"Mr. Rearden," said Francisco, his voice solemnly calm, "if you saw Atlas, the giant who holds the world on his shoulders, if you saw that he stood, blood running down his chest, his knees buckling, his arms trembling but still trying to hold the world aloft with the last of this strength, and the greater his effort the heavier the world bore down on his shoulders – what would you tell him to do?"
"I … don't know. What … could he do? What would you tell him?"
"To shrug."
From "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand.

Naturally, the common people don't want war, but after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Vocie or no vocie, the people can always be brought to bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of partitism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.

The issue of "credibility" amongst these two philosophers is up to you.

"You can drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, on every continental shelf and atop every hill in America for that matter, and you still won't reverse the fact that our oil production is in permanent decline. We're just sopping up what's left, digging ourselves into a deeper hole."
- Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD), senior member of the House Science Committee, on America's oil addiction
Said to President George W. Bush at a town hall meeting,
"“In my lifetime, I have never felt more ashamed of my leadership in Washington, and I would hope from time to time that you have the humility and grace to be ashamed of yourself.” -Harry Taylor
Whether or not I agree with what he said, I applaud him for speaking his mind in a respectful manner to the President. I also like that President Bush told the audience to let him speak when they started to boo him.
