Ditka was so upset about the game that for 10 years it had an asterisk next to the score in the team's media guide, noting it as the "instant replay game." The rule was to be judged where the ball was when it was released, not his foot. It appears the ball was past the line of scrimmage when it was released. So the penality should have stood.

But the ref's call was

I was at that game. We were running late to get to the game. One friend who was coming with us arrived late. I thought I had enough gas to make it to the game. My '80 Mustang with the 351 Cleveland ran out of gas in the middle of game traffic. I had enough momentum, AND the light was green to coast through an intersection and stop at a pump.

It was a good game.

The Bears still suck.
