Just curious, since Michigan does, and apparently a lot of states do not? I got licensed in a bunch of categories because 1) It looks good on a resume if I'm applying to auto parts suppliers or auto companies, to show I have practical experience, 2) In case I ever get hired as a mechanic while trying to find work, and 3) Bragging rights

What tests did you have to take to get those?

Just wondering how you got certs in all those fields. If it was just a multiple choice questions your chances of getting a passing grade are so much higher, even if you know nothing.

Not saying you don’t but it makes it easier for others. Depends on the state, if you are a licensed shop. Lots of guys up here just have a garage and put out the word. Some of the best mechanics I know have no license.

Congrats on getting those.

I think the entire 'professional license' thing is a scam, drives up costs and gets the governments nose into places it doesn't belong. Having your papers doesn't prove a thing about competency, it just means you can take the test and fork out the cash (tax). Sure, competent people can take the tests, but lots of good people cant do either and are barred from making an honest living.

Now, if the 'licenses' were optional, i wouldn't have a problem with it. Then everyone 'wins'.

( like the above post I am not saying you in particular are not competent, just that the 'program' is a scam. )

I dread the day when they mandate IT people become licensed. Just another layer of expensive nonsense that wont help anyone in the long run.

I thought the "ASE" tests were to show professionalism, not a lisense. I think a lisense is just anouther way to generate revenue.

Like most MCSE A+ etc? Any highschool level can get them. A huge bunch of tech/voc HS teaches to be ___ certs. An A+ cert student and never see inside computer? Local VHS turns them out year after year. What a sad joke.... Requirement to get work too at many firms.

Many ASE are same- teach for test but not really any good doing anything. People hate Pep Boy etc? Pep Boy's uses ASE in all they advertisement and web site. ( http://www.pepboys.com/service/ ) Many companies now required to get work you must be ASE.

License doesn't protect you from dirt bag shops or even a Dr. Try getting a License pull on a Dr....

How much does it cost for 11 certs?
You have 3 date... So if I want you to work on older car, like 1970 Mustang, I'm out of luck?

See? License is two way to look at it.

No, when it comes to being licensed for work, it will be a state run thing, and they wont be accepting 'industry certifications'. The bar will be even lower as its not about skill, its about ponying up with the cash, which of course gets passed along to the customer.

Not sure what to say about requiring one to get an interview. I suppose it helps weed out people that aren't committed enough, but i agree it doesn't mean a hell of a lot in regards to their actual skills. ( plus this is a companies choice and would never interfere with their rights but i draw the line when its a state mandate ) I still remember having to get certified by vendors so we could get paid for warranty work. To show how a scam that was, *I* was the only one certified in the shop for 90% of the vendors so every job went under my number.

I would tend to agree, while it does take some good automotive knowledge to pass the tests, it's basically just a way to make money.

One of the license areas I have is 'Pre-1973 Vehicles' (3rd from the bottom) which would cover that. That test was basically 100 questions, using bits and pieces from the other tests.

The whole licensing procedure is explained on Michigan's Secretary of State website:

As far as I know, Florida doesn't require auto mechanics to be licensed. But have fun trying to get a mechanic job without an ASE cert.

As long as it's not required by the state I'm all for it. Sounds like the shops are working together to make service better for everyone.
