I had seen these before among my dad's old photos, but I was digging thru old stuff the other day and when I saw them I thought it might be of interest here, so I scanned them.

There was nothing written on the backs of any of them. And I don't recognize anything or anybody in the pics. He never told me that he went to the Indy 500, and in fact, these photos could have been taken by his mom or siblings, but that's not likely.

I have them in 1200 dpi, about 1.5 MB each, if anyone is interested.

How do you know it's 1949? I am sure the cars tell you what general years, but how did you narrow it down to 1949 specifically?

From attendants cars, The newest I saw was a 49 Ford, So it was at least 49, so I started there.
So I looked at 1949 Indy race cars.
Could have been later but first shot hit.

For sure! Thanks, coy.

My dad was born in 5/4/21, so he was 28 at the time. That was before he married my mom. Guess he did a little traveling before he settled down, because the same photo album these were in also had pics of Washington DC and a few other touristy sites.

Thank you Cheever for posting the photos, The bit of mystery wasn't hard to figure out, and made me look at some interesting sites.
One of the cars in your photos is the "Kennedy Tank Special no. 74" It was driven by" Wild Bill Cantrell". He only ran the 48 and 49 Indy races but was well known in Hydroplane racing.

There were no 50-51 Woodies in 1949.

The woodie is a GM, Olds or Pontiac, Note center lever on the upper part of rear opening or rear window.

I like the pith helmets. They were popular back then, but I don't know why. Dad had two of them in our house, but I don't remember any of us ever actually wearing one for anything.

Cool pics. I was guessing 50-51. The woody wagon looks to be a 50-51 Buick Estate Wagon. Also looks like a 50-51 Pontiac in the parking lot. Those were the newest I seen. I did see a few 49 Fords.

Wolfhound is right, based on the race cars. The only confusion is that Duke Dinsmore is shown in either car #28 or #29, depending on which source you check. Maybe he had two cars ?

#29 Duke Dinsmore
#74 William "Wild Bill" Cantrell
#3 Mauri Rose
#17 Duane Carter

The Woody is 48-49
50-51 was a new body style.48-49 had a single tail light over the tag and a split rear window. 50-51 had tail lights on the fenders and a single piece rear window.
