You and I often disagree and seem to be on different ends of the political spectrum.
I am a registered independent (25 years) and consider myself a political moderate, but I understand that when you're standing at one edge of the political universe everything else looks like it's on "the other end."

Do you think this bill is OK?
My current understanding is that the bill would be no more intrusive than the current and long-established ability under the federal Communications Act of 1934 for government agencies to subpoena telephone company records associating a person with a directory number. If so, I would support it.

Then you and others are wrong. Is not same as phone # and Time placed from phone co. CC? Bank Account #? All in 1 place is invitation to hack and more... Plus This bill is a "toe/foot in door" kind of bill at best... Wants much more data to retain... http://news.cnet.com/Your-I...-1028_3-5748649.html and others. One reason why all ISP are screaming because price and storage to keep all of data for Gov maybe wants data in future.
Police agencies, any level of Government, Lawyers on "Discovery," RIAA/MPAA, etc, can mine any data than your ISP stores.
What's worse... Comcast and many others are very short on IPv4 Address and a result have very short DHCP leases. Even w/o power cycle computer/router, your IP address can, likely will, change. I've had 6 leases that I know about in last 2 months. Errors to track IP address goes up dramatically.

6 leases in 2months? wow... ive seen comcast address stay constant for years... even after full reboots etc...
but dont worry,. ipv6 will be here soon, comcast could run their entire network as ipv6, using their modems as ipv4 gateways, they have already upgraded most the modem firmwares to be ready for this.

Here is the full text of the proposed House Resolution under discussion. You are free to disagree with the proposed HR, but please don't make it into something that it's not.
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
SECTION 2. FINANCIAL FACILITATION OF ACCESS TO CHILD PORNOGRAPHY.
SECTION 3. MONEY LAUNDERING PREDICATE.
SECTION 4. RETENTION OF CERTAIN RECORDS BY ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION SERVICE PROVIDERS.
SECTION 5. NO CAUSE OF ACTION AGAINST A PROVIDER DISCLOSING INFORMATION UNDER THIS CHAPTER.
SECTION 6. GOOD FAITH RELIANCE ON REQUIREMENT.
SECTION 7. SUBPOENA AUTHORITY.
SECTION 8. PROTECTION OF CHILD WITNESSES.
SECTION 9. SENTENCING GUIDELINES.
SECTION 10. ENHANCED PENALTIES FOR POSSESSION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY.
SECTION 11. ADMINISTRATIVE SUBPOENAS.
Doug85GT has already posted SECTION 4 in its entirety. SECTION 7 is also interesting, in that it grants the U.S. Marshal's Service the authority to "issue administrative subpoenas ... solely for the purpose of investigating unregistered sex offenders ....’’ (Emphasis added.) SECTION 11 further defines: "... the term ‘sex offender’ means an individual required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (42 U.S.C. 16901 et seq.).’’ (Emphasis added.)

I agree. My dynamic IP delegation (Time Warner/Road Runner) hasn't changed since the last time I changed the MAC on my router ... about three years ago. Of course, my IP could change tomorrow. The previous change was when Road Runner reconfigured their network and my IP was moved to a whole different subnet.

I can see where some people would have a problem in regards to "hackers" getting their personal info, but that already happens--sometimes, in droves. IOW, some unscrupolous person or group stealing their indentity.
I can also see, why a LOT of folks would have a problem with it in regards to their own online activity, that is, them stealing info, software, and intellectual (copywrited) property, and it's no surprise, that many of those who openly (and covertly) support such illegal endeavors are now at the vocal forefront of the groups complaining that someone "might" steal something from them--of a more personal nature. Kinda ironic and hipocritical.

Except that I'm not "standing on one edge". I'm vehemently anti-far-left. There's a difference. My view on a lot of things is actually more center-right libertarian. I just don't abide the left, and I'm passionate about it. Don't mistake passion for distance from center.
