Think about it. Nerd culture has migrated to mainstream popular with things like l33t speak that has roots in the nerdy computer hacking and computer gaming geeks.

IIRC, the "cool to be a nerd" thing started sometime in the late '80s or early '90s... pretty much in conjunction with the alternative music movement. Both of those things have become mainstream, and are now ubiquitous.
That said, many of the "nerdy hot" chicks are actually "regular" hot chicks who act nerdy, because that's what's popular.
I have played the old 90s and early 2000s Elder Scrolls and my mexican buddy would get mad when a random person would refer to his race NORD and he would get SOO MAAAD and slay the person and city guards would chase him to the gates on horseback. AAHHH DAGGERFALL
