CONCORD, Calif. - Officials at a Northern California private school are apologizing after a lunch menu option to celebrate Black History Month angered some parents and students.
Students at Carondelet High School for Girls in Concord wanted to come up with ways to commemorate the occasion during a lunchtime celebration Friday. But when the school announced a menu of fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon on Monday, other students and parents became offended.
KNTV-TV reports that school officials held an assembly Wednesday to discuss the issue and also sent a letter apologizing to parents.
Principal Nancy Libby wrote that the items were taken off of the menu and that the school doesn't perpetrate racial stereotypes. Libby also wrote the school will hold a diversity assembly.
A school spokeswoman said Thursday that there was a communications breakdown and the menu was planned and publicized without administrative knowledge or permission.
So I'm on OkCupid, the internet dating website, and one of the questions was something similar to: "Are jokes concerning race ever funny?" I answered yes. Sometimes they absolutely are. Poking fun at stereotypes, like giggling at this article, is totally cool IMO.
But all the women on there have said no and labeled the question as critically important (you can rank your answers for better results). Naturally, this decreases my percentage of a match.
Anyway, I just thought about that because c'mon... this is freaking funny.

I would agree, however IMO it depends on what exactly one is laughing at and, of course, context.

How easily people get butthurt. There is just no way to not laugh at how seriously some people take themselves. When folks walk this earth looking for things to be upset about, it's really hard not to give it to them.

It doesn't say what the other parents race was who were offended, I wonder why. I love corn muffins but you guys in the south don't make it so you can actually pick it up, it falls apart. not a fan of bread or muffins I can't pickup and eat.

Oh the stuff Melanie makes you can pickup and cut and butter, but when we were in TN anywhere I got some you couldn't put a slab of butter on without it falling apart and that was neighbors and restaurants. They were always pouring some white gravy on it and making it even less palatable as well.

I guess serving tacos on Cinco De Mayo would be an insult too ?

So true. It reminded me of the story a few days ago about a school which used different days to celebrate different things. The Students wanted Monday to be "America Day". The school said ...

I don't much like cornbread OR watermelon. And I've lived around Atlanta all my life.

Just as well. Go for quality. Not quantity. What a bunch of whiney-azzed crybabies.

Well, hell... I guess everyone in my town is racist, then. You can't get anywhere near a Mexican restaurant on Cinco De MAyo, for the crowds.

That's the way my family on both sides always made it. Now that my Mom isn't able to cook for family get togethers, it's my duty. Solid enough to slice it open, slather it with butter and eat it like a slice of pizza. Remember, Pi R Square. Cornbread Are Round.
They tend to eat the same things the rest of us eat here in the south and vice versa. The stereo type is not that they eat it--the stereo type is that they alone eat certain types of foods, which is not true here where I live. Growing up in the 50s, fried chicken and cornbread was the usual fare at my house at least once/week. Watermelon the same way in season. I've been to lots of buffet type places in my life, and I've never seen anyone avoid a food because of the reasons being discussed here.

Hard to say...I wonder if a traditional menu for African Americans is.... Fried Chicken, Cornbread and watermelon?
Or is that something that an idiot using stereotypes might suggest?
Would a Canadian be offended by a cafeteria offering poutine during "Canadian History Month?" If you wanted to serve a "traditional African American meal" what would you serve that couldn't somehow be associated with African Americans?

So you start out saying you don't know and then move straight to calling somebody an idiot................
Most stereo types are born in some truth, are some offensive? sure, I guess. I think few people would not like that menu, sounds tasty to me. Maybe it is just the origin of the chicken or something. This is not like anybody was saying X is stupid just because he is X and Z is the superior letter and Y just asks too many questions.
Hey, anybody else see people get offended over dumbasss stuff have urges to try offend them even more?

Case in point - what beverage did Trayvon Martin purchase the night he went out to buy Skittles? Virtually every media outlet reported it as "Arizona Iced Tea" only it wasn't "tea." It was Arizona Watermelon Fruit Juice Cocktail. The media was apparently concerned about the racist overtones of reporting a black person with a watermelon flavored drink.

Offended? I wouldn't, I'd think it was an idiotic choice though.

Brief report (the OP). Doesn't say exactly who got "pissed" about this school lunch offering. Could be some other kind of folks that raised this as some kind of issue. Or maybe it was some blacks AND some other kind of folks all on the same page about this. Relatives of the late Colonel Harland David Sanders..?

Maybe it's because the drink and Skittles are two of the three ingredients of "Lean", a popular street drug.
edit: I think it would have been more offensive to serve catfish rather than fried chicken.

Obviously the organizers didn't know much about blacks as they forgot the forth staple of the African American diet - grape soda.
I probably drank 9 railway carloads of Nehi grape soda in my youth. (or is that Yute?) Sometimes, while eating fried chicken. Does that make me African American?
