i order the light bulb from Kevin this week. my car has been parked for several days cause it's raining. this morning, i get in and start it up and notice the display is still out. said "great, cause i'm getting a new bulb". i drive a few blocks to get to the main road and while i'm waiting at the stop light i look down at my radio and notice that the DISPLAY is back ON. what could cause this, a loose wire, short, or something else?

Tom - It will go back out. There is a filament in there that breaks. Ocassionally you hit just the right bump and it causes the filament to make contact for a while. It usually doesn't last long. Often times I find that as soon as power is turned off to the radio, the contact is lost. Meaning when I turn it on next time, it's not lit up anymore.
In some instances it's just a matter of dirty contacts or a bulb that is loose in the socket but, more often than not, it's the bulb that's bad. Your best bet is to replace it.

I am interested in understanding the differences in these models. I have a 1987 SE that I am putting a 400+HP Northstar in and want some tunes that offset that "rumble" Can you please explain what the Monsoon vs the other players are? Additionally, does this have a woofer out capability? ie... Watts per channel, Bridge capability? etc?
PM me or email me at djmckenney8765@yahoo.com
Thanks, DJ

I can answer this. Electrically, the Monsoon is identical to the regular UP3. Just says "Monsoon" in white letters on the face, above the clock display. There *is* that "cool factor", though. The output is around 45W per channel, X 4. Probably around 20-25W RMS X 4. (This is based upon a comparison to the Pioneer DEHP77, which sounds nearly identical.) There is no provision for "sub out", bridging, or any kind of hi/lo pass filtering. It's four discrete full-range outputs. It does work with the factory Fiero subwoofer system, with a few wiring tweaks mentioned earlier in this thread. If you want to run external subs/amps (other than the stock Fiero one), you will likely need speaker-level to line-level converters, and the amp and or crossover of your choice.

Sorry I haven't checked in on this thread in a couple weeks. I've been rather busy with a major home improvement project. (Major for me anyway...)
Everything that Raydar said about the Monsoon is true. Thanks Raydar.
I do have more of these kits available. Please email me at radios@replacementradios.com if you have specific questions. Otherwise Paypal payments can go to the same email address. It's $159 for the regular CD player with EQ. $179 for the Monsoon. That includes shipping in the continental US. Please email if you're somewhere else.
Oh yeah. One last thing. I WILL be at the Dells Run again this year. I'll be set up as a vendor and I'll have plenty of these packages. I'll see you there...

Kru I am interested in one of these Stereo with the CD player. I do have a couple of questions. First about 15 years ago I had a Kenwood stereo installed and I know they cut the plug off of the plug off the wiring harness. Do sell sell that plug? Next question my car is an 84 with the speakers in the sets and the two in the dash will the radio work AOK with this year of car?

Can you PM your phone number and addy to me? I have a friend who wants one of these (after he saw the one I bought) but doesn't have internet access. I think he talked with you before, but lost your contact info.
Thanks!

numan - I can supply the plug with pigtails for the new radio. I have no male plugs for the older style. If you wired the new plug in, you wouldn't need the adapter kit. I can knock $20 off the kit price without the adapter. It will work fine with your factory speakers, yes.
riley - There are no factory CD players this size that play MP3s.
Tom Slick - I am completely out of bulbs right now. I've been hounding my supplier and they keep giving me the run-around. Time for me to find a new supplier I guess...

my sister in law was out of town for the weekend and left her car at my house and it got broken into....it is a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am
I will give you one guess one what factory part they took....and it pertains to this thread....
lol just kidding the story it true but by no means saying you are sending people out to steal these units. at least i hope not.....
i know know how to break into a Pontiac Grand Am very well without doing much damage or breaking the window the crooks left some good hints/evidence as far as what to do to get in fast and quietly....maybe i will use these techniques and start selling some radios too
take this as a free bump and venting my frustration for the scumbag that came into my nice, quiet, nearly all retired old people, community and stole from my family.

If you didn't enable the theftlock when you installed the radio, it won't get enabled just by disconnecting the battery. You have to tell it to enable.

How do i enable it or disable it? I bought the radio from Kru, off of ebay. So i guess what i was asking was if Kru has permently disabled the theftlock. That would be cool if he disabled it because then i wouldnt ever have to worry about that damn theftlock. I did read in the ebay auction that kru said the theftlock has been disabled, but i was under the impression that once i installed the radio the first time it would be unlocked but when i disconnected the battery to clear the codes that the radio would be locked again and need the code to unlock it. Now i could be very well wrong cause i dont know but i just want someone to correct me and tell me whats the deal here
I believe on 2000 and older radios, it doesn't matter. I installed my own but the radio plugs right in and works. Mine is a Monsoon system from an 00 trans am.

I know that when I bought my Sonoma, there was a long sequence of kwrap that you had to go through in order to enable the theftlock on the radio. At that time, you were supposed to program your own private unlock code. Since the Pontiac radios are different, I would expect the programming steps to be a bit different. I don't know what they are, but I'm sure that you have to key in something to enable the theftlock.
Also, if the theftlock was enabled on your new radio, then it couldn't have been powered down and shipped to you. It would have come up "locked" when you installed it.
Don't worry about it.

Puck - You caught me. All this time I've been stealing the Pontiac radios and the hundreds of other radios that I sell through eBay and on my website. I'm surprised no one has noticed it down here in our area. It's not like we're a huge metropolis... Actually, I have several legitimate sources and can provide the VIN number for the car the radio came from 90% of the time...
Daniel87FieroGT - Sounds like you all have it figured out but I'll weigh in to 'make it official'. My radios all have Theftlock disabled. (The ones for the Fiero anyway.) It is disabled until such time that you go through the "kwrap" that was mentioned a few posts ago.
I have been doing this for 2 years now and I have only had two reports of Theftlock engaging spontaneously (and I have to wonder if those were legitimate reports or just someone trying to get a freebie unlock on another radio.)
As Raydar said, you were able to install and use it without any problems after it was shipped to you. It will be no different when you cut power to it. Unless you've programmed your own code into it...

I regret to inform the Fiero community that I will no longer be able to offer the forum discount on these Fiero CD packages. Unfortunately, after 2 years of selling them, I have found that the supply of these radios is starting to dry up. (At the prices I normally pay, anyway.) They are no longer putting these radios in any vehicles either, so it will only get worse. Consequently, I can no longer afford to offer the discount.
I certainly hope the price 'increase' doesn't affect your decision to purchase one of these packages. I still feel like they are an excellent value, if you compare what you would have to pay for all the components separately. Plus, you get installation instructions, a warranty, support and a wealth of knowledge.
I have not forgotten my Fiero roots. I know I owe the success of my radio business to the Fiero community and to this forum in particular. I want to thank the 200+ Fiero owners who have purchased one of these packages from me. I do plan to continue attending Fiero shows with these packages. Possibly even at special 'show prices.' I'll just have to see what supply looks like at that time.
Thanks again for helping to make replacementradios.com a success.
