I have a 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix with a wierd mounted Delco stereo cassette that instead of mounting with the tabs off to the side, it mounts with studs on top and bottom like GM computers. I also have a 1998 Chevy Lumina with a nice Delco CD deck with steering wheel controls that I was hoping to install in it. Any ideas on mounting or is there a CD deck available with the same setup as the cassette deck for this application? I think it's a one year one model thing... looking through the wrecking yards the slightly earlier years were even weirder with square tuners and a square seperate cassette sorta din 1.5 chopped in half widthwise. The 1993 is din 1.5 just strange mount and connectors and alingment pin in wrong spot compared to 1998.
Help!

Scott, That is a Three piece radio similar to the ones in a Chevly Truck. The Radio Amplifier is behind the glove box underneath and the Controls head and seperate tape deck plug into the the Radio Amplifier. This most likely has the GM mini- style wiring harness for power and speakers. You were not think of putting this stereo in a Fiero... were you?

The 93 doesn't have the three peice radio... externally it looks like a regular Delco stereo, but it mounts like a GM computer with studs top and bottom rather than the tabs on the front sides that bolt in to the dash.
I just found a CD player in the completed items on Ebay that looks like correct mount...
The radios with the studs on the top and bottom are probably older units. If you look closely, you may notice that the studs are actually mounted in spring-steel clips that can be removed and placed into different positions on the case.
The radio I got from Kru had mounting tabs as an integral part of the case, but I'm not sure if they're all that way.
BTW... That radio in the link you posted -the one that supposedly came from the Park Avenue- is the first time I've ever seen that radio with green backlighting. Up until now, the only ones I've seen have had red backlighting for Pontiacs. They've not very common even with the Pontiac setup.

The Buick version is very hard to find and is characterized by the green display and the lack of gray buttons, knobs, etc. Heck the Pontiac version is pretty hard to find too. Especially if you're picky and you want one that actually works...
The application listing in that second link is very poor. It might fit some of those applications if the brackets were included, but it doesn't look like they are. And some of those applications have the fixed brackets on the stock radio, so you wouldn't be able to do the old swap-a-roo.
Speaking of fixed brackets, the newer Pontiac CD players I am selling ALL have the fixed brackets. You've got to go back to the older style of CD player (as pictured in your links) to get the bolt-on brackets. As Raydar (and my PM) mentioned, there are many mounting points on those older radios for the mounting studs. They can be relocated to whatever position you need them in because they're just clipped in. So... radios from many early 90s GM vehicles (up to 96, in some vehicles) are interchangeable. But, again, you have that pesky little problem of actually finding one that works.
In theory, you could screw the old brackets to the top and bottom of a newer (late 90s unit) and cut the fixed brackets off but you would need to be VERY careful about where you were putting the screws.

Thanks for the replies guys, I may go aftermarket and save my nice 98 Delco deck with fixed brackets for my project fiero. Just want to try and make the wife happy with a CD deck and I like the stock look/ functionality /less likelyhood of theft the delco units would supply.

I saw a combo am/fm, cassette, cd player some place, are these available through you? I can imagine that this would have a lot of moving parts that could fail?

Audiovox made an aftermarket combo in the two-tone gray color that was designed specifically with Pontiac vehicles in mind. I had a few of those early on when I started selling these packages (3+ years ago) but they were out of production already then. They're even harder to find now. I have one in one of my personal Fieros that I have contemplated swapping out for an unusual factory radio I acquired but haven't made up my mind. If I do pull it, I'll probably list it here on Pennocks in 'The Mall'.

Thanks Kevin. Try to remember to PM me first. I'm not facing a deadline or anything. For me, putting my favorite albums on cassette is simpler than tring to record thru my computer.

The only picture I have right now of the Audiovox unit is the one they offered in all black. The face was dark gray and the knobs were light gray on the 'Pontiac' version. Come to think of it, I actually have one of these black versions as well. However, I don't think I have the plugs for it, so Pontiac plugs would need spliced on it. I've got the plugs for the gray/gray one. Here is a link to a pic of the black one:
I'll post a picture of the gray one when I get time to remove it from the vehicle. I believe they were sold in the mid to late 90s. They were aftermarket, so they never made it in any vehicles from the factory but I've heard that some dealerships were offering them as dealer options in the late 90s. You can switch the display color to either green or red. I sold a few to Fiero owners on this site a couple years ago. If you start a new post specifically about that radio you might be able to get someone to give you some photos of it in their car.
The 'rare' factory radio (technically radios, as I have two of them) I acquired is a lot like this one:
However, it has RDS (Radio Data System), so some of the buttons are labeled differently. I believe it was made for a non-US market, so I have no idea how the FM tuner is going to work out. The piece I like is the RDS feature, which will display text. I have a factory below-dash CD6 unit w/ a nice cover (from an early Envoy) that I will be mounting under the dash on the passenger side and mating to the head unit. It should give me a one-of-a-kind 'factory' set-up. And since I switched all my gauges to white-faced with blue or green backlighting, it will go well with the new theme.
Now if I could just find a way to get the backlighting on those climate controls to be green, blue or white...

Well, I have no idea what is going on with those links. I just checked and they're both valid and I have them formatted just like the link I provided in my very first post of this thread but, for some reason, these aren't working...
Either I'm having a serious brain fart or something has changed or something weird is going on...
Edit: Still couldn't figure it out, so I changed how I had them linked...

I noticed on your website that you have a Pontiac Monsoon CD headunit that will control a CD changer (and aux input adapter). Is that true of all the Monsoon UP3 headunits like the one I bought? Or just a select few? Have you verified this functionality? (I'm assuming you have, but I've still got to ask.) Thanks!

Not all the Monsoon units have the changer controls. I've seen people say that they do but they're wrong. We test them with a changer here, so I know they don't. You would have been sent the version without changer controls. The version that has them is harder to find so we advertise them as such and sell them at a premium.
Thanks for correcting my images above. A brain fart it was...

Ok bear with me. I have an 88 coupe, and purchased a complete 'Pro sub system' from another PFF member. The wiring looks complete but has 11 cut wires unaccounted for coming off the Subamp. They have various colors and I'm fairly confidant I can chase down where to hook them, I have a color schematic printed out somewhere. I'm planning to use those plastic wire splices from 3M the kind where you put in your new wire, slip the splicer over the existing wire, squeze the bar and close the plastic cover. From the pictures on the Replacement Radio website, does the wiring adaptor have enough room to tap off all my wires or will I have to clamp some of these on the 'stock' wires.
I'm planning to pick up one of your CD radios, haven't decided which, and was planning to kill 2 birds at the same time. It's my idea that if I realy goober up something, I'd rather do it on the adapter. I hope I can always order a spare adpter from you?
Is there any significant Wattage diferences between your offerings, or are the diferences between the 'Monsoon', 'Pontiac',and the 'GM', basicly equalizers, styling and manufacturer?

To everyone who has had excellent service fro Kru. I am amazed he still does not have a ratings bar. I have read response after response that was positive. This thread alone has been going now for 4 years. not only his information, but also his product and service has been a boon to this community. Sorry to jack the thread but someone has to speak up for Kevin.
Now Kevin, I need a conversion harness and antenea adapter. Do you create your own? How can I get one today? Galen

Wow! I guess I haven't been back to this thread in a while. But I thought I would bump it back to the top since Christmas is getting so close...
Stalen88GT - Thanks for the kind words. I too have often scratched my head as to why I don't have enough ratings to deserve a bar. I've sold over 100 of these kits through this forum alone. And I've only had one person indicate real displeasure with the product and that was after it was out of warranty. (We still try to work something out for people if this happens, by the way.) Anyway, in regards to your question about the adapters, they are available separately. If you haven't already got ahold of us to get them, check it out in the Wiring category at www.replacementradios.com or give us a call at 217-480-0332.

Nothing cosmetic. We test each one to determine functionality. We only have one GM changer and it's the one we use to test with. We don't sell them because they don't survive shipping too well.

I just ordered one of the Monsoon CDC units for my Fiero from Kru over the phone- he was very helpful; very informative on all my questions. I'll post here again when I receive the radio and have installed it, but so far, this thread needs a
BUMP
(For those of you that are wondering why I'm going back on my word to never do any mods on my Fiero: DON'T WORRY! I'm keeping the stock radio in pampered storage, ready to go right back in on a moment's notice!)

For those of you wondering if you do in fact need to remove the triangular bracket with the round hole (as Kru's instructions state you might), putz with it first! (i.e., wiggle, nudge, coax...)
I was concerned about making a permanent change, even one so hidden, to my otherwise bone-stock baby, but after messing with it a while, the thick metal "pin" on the back of the new stereo mated up with the hole in the bracket closely enough that everything worked. (Shoving my head up underneath the steering wheel reveals that the bracket is pushed backward, but only slightly.)
(If it really doesn't work after putzing, and for a much less permanent change, you could always go the route of unscrewing the pin from the back of the stereo...)
Anyway, what a great way to get VASTLY improved sound, all without any permanent changes to my Fiero.
