The more I know about the 308, the more strongly I believe it was really a piece of crap. About the only thing they have going is their great looks and they're cheap--initially. In a very short time the money you will spend could buy you a Renuzzi Calspyder, or a McBurnie Daytona.

I think the guy who did the Fiero engine swap had the right idea.
There's a beautiful yellow one here locally with over $100k in it--you'll have to aim higher.
ha, i forgot about that F-Car conversion. thats tooo slow. i hate that the Mera looks fast but is not!! unless your one of Nelson's Mera ole Mera7 had the right idea.......GM swaps with the Vette engines in the 308 Italian style with American dependability!!!! GETYOUSOME

and speaking of "getyousome" TransAm update, so far its a new clutch needed(whoops) and something about a new flywheel. but after that, there may be a syncro problem. but as typical, the mech. cant check the trans till he fixes the clutch......i am at $1200 as is boooooooooooooo!!!!

Dan,
If you are installing a new clutch assembly, a new flywheel is a good investment. Turning down an existing flywheel could cause you problems much sooner. I always replace my clutch and flywheel as a unit on my Fiero's. I would also replace the hydraulic throw out bearing and make sure it is properly bled. That may be the cause of your "synchro" issues if it is not properly releasing. If the synchros are badly worn, then a trans overhaul is the only fix. It might be cheaper to purchase a professionally rebuilt unit, and get credit for yours a a core.

thanks for the info.....i put it in the hands of the Mechanic. i did not know the guy before, but its a recommended source. i just told him to fix it! i got some $$ saved for the fix and its covered, i am soo happy, i got the new/used car inspection, oil change. hopefully, a good going over. he said it did look good under and around, but had to weld a crack in the bell housing but as i remember i was having problems with it coming out of gear while driving and mentioned that to the Mech and that may be the synchros in theTrans, cuz he said that the clutch does not Keep it "in" gear. well if so, i guess thats a new Trans then and if so its a pricey one at that.....so i have to ask
if i should say, want to put my low mile LT1 engine into Mera X does it use the 6-speed GM trans that i broke or would i need another, most likely smaller one to fit in the Fiero?? see where i am going with this???? EH???? ohhhhh baby!! just need to go back to sheet metal and>>>>>>>>>>>> ohhh to dream the impossible dream somethings got to break loose, soon.......come on!! i have been a real good boy, lately

You would need a manual transaxle for the Fiero. The G6 6-speed would work but you are in for a lot of fabrication and additional expense. You are better off, and will spend less by just picking up a rebuilt gearbox, or good pull out trans from a savage yard for the T/A.

yulp!! i got 'er back today!! i aint got no 5the gear but the rest work fine who needs 5th with a 6 speed, anyway?
im's ahhh gonna keep her........i forgot how good this car is 6th gear handles highway speeds.
i think on the highway at 70 MPH it was 4000 RPM. is that too high for that speed for tooo long? its Math so i do not know.....at all but i am diggin having some thing to drive to the big annual Vicksburg, MI car show.....its a biggin'
ohhh did i mention the RogerWaters show at the VanAndel?? no, well that was last night YES!!! "THE(whole)WALL"!!! front to back....quite awesome :cheese: getyasum!!

5th and 6th are both overdrive gears on the T/A. You will have a bigger RPM drop off going from 4th to 6th but as long as the trans holds toghether you shold be ok. Did they tell you why no 5th gear?
LEEZARD: What is involved in swapping in an F23 in place of a stock Getrag? What make it better than the stock Fiero Getrag?

really?? on the highway it seems to want 5th for 70 to 90, maybe. it gets real close in 4th to 80 but its 4500-5000 RPM and it seems like, to hold that with out 5th is bad. But if that F23 business swaps to a new(er) less that 65,000mi, crate LT1 eng, then i got an out. it seems a bit tough to find this Borg-Warner T56 trans. even the Mechanic had no luck. Rick, as far as to why 5th is buggered?? he did not take apart the trans (well, minus the bell housing tobe welded, does that count?) to my knowledge just said it was bust.....and first thing i did is hook a nice burnie, and hit 1-4 and went for 5th and got...":GRIND!!" but 1-4 and 6 seems good and reverse wants to pop....".synchros??"
i got that car-show this weekend so i will be driving it to check it out. i have a music gig in Indiana to check things out with too time for the Summer concerts.....cuz the Spring series was awesome!!!! right?? Elton AND Waters?? ohhhh yeah!! now i just need Simon&Garfunkel and i will be a happy camper
the f23 5spd is a better gearbox than the f40 6spd. easier to swap as well. but to each their own.
OI!! will this F23, work with the LT1. i got a crate replacement.....with 58,000miles is that considered LOW miles, still?? i just found the paper work with the replacement serial and such. 131,000 miles, now on the clock and the paperwork says in 2002, "replaced at 73,000". i bought in 2004 late, Oct-Nov with, 102,000 miles. jolly good!! this engine is still worth something. maybe a trade for a 3800 SC or something............hummmmmm

nice looking pontiac dan.
you mean this Pontiac???
gee, thanks i sure did miss it.....its good to have 2 cars, again too you know??? for emergencies and all

The F23 is a later model front wheel transaxle that will bolt to the Fiero V6. It cannot replace the 6 speed T56 transmission for your T/A. You will have to get one of these from another Camaro or Firebird with a V8 from a 94 to 97 for a bolt in swap. It sounds like the 5th gear synchro is shot on yours. Will it shift into 5th if you shift it easily? If so the synchros are bad. If you are also having trouble with reverse, odds are the trans is going to need an overhaul soon. I would not beat on it too hard or you may be walking again soon.

oh i assumed since we were talking about the LT1 swapped in Mera X i could use the F23 ( thats my bad, for i ment "f40") i thought you guys were saying that the F40 (as a 6 speed) was a replacement/update to the T56....that went beyond me sorry i got the TransAm fever.......soooo much stronger than the Fiero. i am totally diggin this grip and the steering is way better than Mera X and your warning does point out that when the Transmission does go, i need to be nice to the engine and body as a way to finance the Mera repair/swap. i got a guy from PFF, OleJoeDad, who has/had a massaged 3.4L (eh,Rick??nudge, nudge) he says $1000. ............ but that money went into the T/A.
my crossroads has a come;(

rick and dan... i think we all got confused on the transmission posts. dan, your trans am needs a t56 6 speed for a lt1. the f23 and f40 gearboxes are for the fiero/mera. rick, the f23 would need custom mounts, and some minor shift cable modification other than that it is easy as in it uses getrag axles. i was stating the f23 is easier to mount in or fabricate in than the f40 6spd. as far as a comparison with the stock fiero getrag 282 that is the obvious easy solution of all 3. the getrag 282 is just buy off the shelf parts and bolt it together. happy motoring to all.

nope it was all me . between the wine and the excitement of getting my TA back.....i saw what i wanted tooo i guess. i see that, after re-reading (sober) i totally took it how i wanted to.
but it is now known to me that the "F" trans are for the Fiero only. gottcha i just glassed over the fact that My Mera is gonna have to wait!! this TA is tooo much fun, for now!! getyasum!!!
sorry Rick for my misunderstanding. its been a busy week and its only gettin busier from here.....off to the car show, laters!!

Leezard,
Is there an advantage of using the F23 over the Getrag if I am only running a 3.4. Seems like a lot of extra work for the same number of gears.......
[This message has been edited by Rick 88 (edited 06-09-2012).]
rick, it is all just subjective opinions. the stock getrag is fine if you have no problems with it currently. lots of ppl have had good luck with the 282 over the yrs. imho if your getrag is fine then leave it alone. but if it was worn out or broke and needed rebuilt or replaced then might be the time to think about the f23. again with a 3.4 a stock 282 is likely fine. but with 282 internal parts getting older and harder to find a newer f23 with parts availability might be welcomed. the f23 is also very well known for taking some serious abuse and being a strong gearbox. so if you do any track time, drag time, or spirited driving with your car maybe the f23 is a good choice as well. happy motoring
ps rick... the f23 fy1 gear ratios are better than the 282 getrag and by far better ratios than the f40. talk to several ppl with f40's and talk to ppl with f23's tho to get your own opinion. see what they have to say.
