Not exactly, I spent the better part of Sunday afternoon tightening and loosening fasteners trying to adjust the crossover so it would be quiet. It's better but you can still hear the exhaust leak. I am actively looking for a factory replacement that is undamaged. One friend recommended that I tighten the firewall bank first so it is quiet. Then slightly loosen the trunk side exhaust manifold. That way when I tighten that side up perhaps the small amount of additional adjustment will allow both sides to seal properly. I replaced the manifold bolts with studs and nuts when I did the 3.4 swap so I don't have to worry about snapping off a manifold bolt. I think that there was just a slight amount of misalignment caused when the pipes were welded, even though they were very careful doing the work.
Hey, I am top of the page two pages in a row! Maybe my luck will change for the better!

Thanks for the info Dick, I'll look into this more and see if it was in fact a factory option on this car. Tough scratching my head between the 2 cars, one is at the top of the food chain for a reason being the 1st one built and one is half the price in decent shape and might be good bang for the buck. Decisions, decisions, decisions...
The yellow T-top Mera always intrigued me. I have had 3 yellow cars including a factory yellow 88 GT 5-5peed, As I recall, that car is also in California. Even needing paint, and a little TLC it would make a great driver.
Got it and just so we're all on the same page I was never looking at any Mera as my daily driver, more of secondary, perhaps 1-2 times a month, so no worries about the beloved #6001! The more I'm trying to justify it, it may make more sense to potentially go after the yellow Mera out of the two, especially for the price... Thanks for all the help, just trying to make the right choice!
^^indeded!! ^^ i want the Proto to keep stock so i can swap a Fast engine in to my Mera X!! since i believe Mera X to be an early example (#7002, maybe) i need an earlier one to keep stock for my collectors Jonze! so i am in a weird spot......i make great money while workin, but as Leeezard mentions the Economy is dead or i'd already own #6001.
and i am not sure how many Yellow stock color Mera are out there but i only know of 3 total. the one in SanDeigo, one in Washington state and Julians in canada. his is an '88 tho....the other 2 were 1987
heres some pics i got when i hooked up with Alan.....and #6001

IMHO, the Chicago car is overpriced--my choice would be the yellow car unless it had mechanical issues. FYI, you may want to check Paul Vargyas' Price Guide http://www.paulvargyas.com/Price%20Guide.htm
My Mera was a daily driver and I loved getting all the looks. Yeah, most important? Have a great time with it

i will tell you this....i have seem me some Mera and that Yellow #7029 is the most OEM Mera i have ever seen for sale. for the price of the Proto you could get a swapped engine and a fresh coat of paint and have plenty of cash left for gas. plus its already on your side of the country, almost beggin for ya to take it. I just like to point that out for ya

This price guide is awesome, really comes in handy, thanks Dick! And sounds like the overall sentiment at this time is to check out the yellow Mera, so I just might do that. I'll have to see when I have time to go down to SoCal. Thanks again, I'm definitely looking to have some fun in a Mera like the rest of you guys!

Great insight on #7029, making a lot more sense to me at this time. Thanks again for all the feedback and advice on things! Keep you guys posted on my hunt.

its what i do. i got mad love for the 1987 Mera. i figure if you buy it, and stick around its win win for me and #7029. cuz it will get used and be seen while gettin used. you just have to post tons of pics while out and about. i do or did till i broke it and you most definately. i have been to SanFrancisco and have a deep envy for you and the pictures you can attain with that new Mera
i have even talked to the seller on the phone. he may remember me. "Dan from Michigan" oooo it rymes
but like i said, bring what you are willing to pay, but start low. this has been on the block for so long i cant believe its still available. SanDeigo is like the furthest tho. Heck you are almost closer to Canada, eh??*checksmap* yulp, almost...... so i bet that has a lot to do with it.....like TOMMY in HI. he was kinda in a limited limited market being south and way west;D good luck with the travel and hopeful sale......get you some

Let me say this about 1987 v.1988 Fieros--the performance difference is overblown. Yes, it exists, but more than compensated by more expensive and harder to find parts for the '88, AND, for less than the average price difference between the two, you can upgrade the 1987 suspension and brakes to even better than the 1988. And, let me say this, though anecdotal, my '87 GT with over 120k miles ran better than either of my '88s with 70ish. OTOH, I did just about wipe out a Z4 in my '87 when bump steer sent me flying into his lane--but I was ahead ;-) So, to prove my point, try to find a front hub for an '88.
Oh, oh, I bet I catch a lot of crap for this posting ;-)

Right on guys, great feedback all around... Seems like a good buy, #7029 that is, at this point anyway, but I still have to give her a good look at some point. Assuming she's still for sale over the next couple of weeks. I'll keep you guys posted, definitely looking to have some fun!
IT is a 1987 mera, #5, and danno and rodney have verified it. it is not an 88. it is #5 of 88 built in 87. it has been in discussion in this thread and several others lately. happy hunting.

most of that is true....i cant verify cuz i dont have an offical list...just one i have complied from Mr. Dickmans addmitions
but the rest is to be correct....Mera #7005 with all that work and missing hard to find parts i would offer way less in person with cash for that fact. walk it for $3500 i bet.....like that #7029. bet $7000 to $7500 could scoop it today

Although I have owned three 88 GT 5-speeds, Richard is right. A well taken care of 87 is a nice car. I drove a number of new 87's as company cars. They had the better headlight motors, like the 88's, two European sounding horns, instead of just the single pathetic plastic one on the 88, cool "Body by Fisher" and "Fiero" emblems in the door sills, and a little more detail in the original cloth seats. They also have the Fiero badges on the map pockets with the stock interior. I have backdated my 88 with 87 horns, Fiero door still emblems, and Fiero map pocket badges since my car is still labeled as a Mera. The 87 brakes are not as fade resistant but that can be upgraded. The only real negative to me is the steering requires more effort at low speeds on the 87 compared to the 88. This will be exaggerated if you go to larger front tires on the Mera.

I have an original 87 Mera nose badge in storage but the condition is not pristine. In fact it is a bit ugly. However, if it would help you, I can take a high resolution photo and e-mail it to you.

Some of us may be interested in replacement badges as well. My original Mera badge is sun damaged. Perhaps you can get a better deal if they make more than one.

I will post a pic when I get mine done.
I have never seen an original MERA badge so I am shooting in the dark on this.
Billet Badges minimum thickness they can make is 1/8", about the same as the Fcar badge that's on it now so it should look OK.
I have one of their steering wheel badges on my DD and they do nice work.

It is not high res, but on page 2 of this thread check out reholms's pictures of his nose badge and a very rare rear badge. It would be nice to reproduce this one as well.

The actual badge on the car is pristene, but it is covered up by:
This badge came out of the US space program. It was made by a North American Rockwell contractor for the PO--only a few "proofs" were made:

Today I am installing a coated Fierostore crossover pipe. Hope my exhaust leak finally goes away. I just could not get the ported and welded stocker to seal properly. Wish me luck.......
